Open IoT Challenge 4.0

I am pleased to say that we launched the fourth Open IoT Challenge today! We are very excited about this one because last year’s was such a great success. I have a feeling that this year will be even more awesome.

What is the Open IoT Challenge?

It’s an annual challenge to encourage IoT enthusiasts and developers to build innovative IoT solutions using open standards and open source technology.

The Challenge finally gives you the chance to build the open IoT solution you’ve been dreaming of. We all have these personal plans and awesome ideas, but never seem to find the time to actually work on them. Initiatives like the Challenge give you the opportunity and a set timeframe to commit to.

Make sure you work hard on your proposal; the 10 best proposals will receive $150 to purchase hardware to make their idea come to life. Don’t be discouraged — even if you don’t make the Top 10, you can still win the Challenge. Everyone who submits a proposal is in the running!

New to the Challenge this year

To make it even more interesting, we encourage submitters to make a video or write a blog post explaining why their solution should be in the Top 10. This is optional, but thinking about your proposal thoroughly and writing it down will help you refine your vision.

Eclipse IoT Newsletter

We are working on the new Eclipse IoT Newsletter. The first issue will be published at the beginning of October and a new one will be published every quarter. This means that I will now be the editor for two newsletters, this new one and the Eclipse Newsletter!

We’ve featured Eclipse IoT articles in the Eclipse Newsletter in the past (March 2017 issue), but thought there was enough content for it to merit it’s own newsletter.

All Things IoT @ EclipseCon Europe

EclipseCon Europe (ECE) has been around for more than a decade. Since 2015, we’ve been organizing co-located Eclipse IoT Days with EclipseCon in Ludwigsburg. This year, there are so many great IoT events and activities happening at and around ECE, that we’ve decided to map it all out for you!

Open Testbeds

We recently announced the launch of Eclipse IoT Open Testbeds. Simply put, they are collaborations between vendors and open source communities that aim to demonstrate and test commercial and open source components needed to create specific industry solutions.

The Asset Tracking Management Testbed is the very first one! It is a collaboration between Azul Systems, Codenvy, Eurotech, Red Hat, and Samsung’s ARTIK team. It demonstrates how assets with various sensors can be tracked in real-time, in order to minimize the cost of lost or damaged parcels. You can learn more about the Eclipse IoT Open Testbeds here.

Case Study

We have been working with Deutsche Bahn (DB) and DB Systel to create a great case study that demonstrates how open source IoT technology is being used on their German railway system. They are currently using two Eclipse IoT projects, Eclipse Paho and Eclipse Mosquitto, among other technologies. In other words, if you’ve taken a DB train in Germany, you might have witnessed the “invisible” work of Eclipse IoT technology at the station or on board. How awesome is that?!

We’re really excited! We will be involved in many aspects of the conference including the Red Hat IoT Partner Showcase, where we will be demoing something very cool! Stay tuned for the details.

Eclipse IoT is growing quickly and becoming an influential open source IoT community. We now have over 30 members and over 25 projects. Just last month, a new Eclipse IoT project called Eclipse Ditto was proposed. Congratulations to the InMoodForLife team for coming in first. Their solution analyzes and monitors the sleep patterns of individuals affected by bipolar disorder. The goal of the solution is to improve the therapeutic approach, react, and adapt the treatment faster. The team already shared part of their future plans with us and it sounds very promising! We hope they will go on to help many individuals suffering from bipolar disorder.

The krishi IoT and RHDS teams also worked very hard and delivered great solutions. Read the full announcement to find out more.

Eclipse IoT Day San Jose

Obviously, I encourage you to attend the Eclipse IoT Day in San Jose and not only because I was was involved in organizing it. It’ll be an awesome event. Just look at the speaker lineup and it’ll be obvious why you need to attend!

The event is co-located with Eclipse Converge and Devoxx US. Plan your trip to California before it’s too late!

It is the third time we conduct this annual survey and the third year I’ve been involved in creating and disseminating it. The results of the past two years have provided great insight into how developers are building IoT solutions. They help various IoT communities and companies to improve their IoT knowledge, technology, and services. If you’re an IoT developer, this is a great opportunity to get your voice heard!

The survey will run until March 17, 2017 and the analyzed results will be published in early April 2017. Obviously, you will get access to our findings!

Dig deep into that ‘giving part’ of yourself and take the survey — it will take 8 minutes max.

The Challenge teams have until February 27, a little over a month left, to finalize their solution and submit their final project report. The team of six judges, comprised of one expert judge representing each sponsor, will deliberate and choose the top 3 solutions. The winners will be announced in early March.
