Hi,

I would like to propose the definition of proper media types for the different message types so that infrastructure and processors can easily determine where to route the message to without the need to introspect the message first (in order to determine its type).

Many (if not most) transport protocols allow for (or explicitly encourage or require) setting a content-type header or message property when sending a message.

This would also make it easier for e.g. Eclipse Hono to route messages properly since Hono is designed to be payload agnostic and should not need to introspect messages (which also dramatically degrades performance from my experience).

I could imagine something like

application/vnd.eclipse.unide-measurement+json
application/vnd.eclipse.unide-message+json

Hi Kai,

good idea.

Do you know any standard in naming these content-type strings? (e.g. Is "application" necessary and what does it stand for?, Is +- allowed? etc.)

Kind Regards,
Henryk
