The law penalizes slandering or insulting the Catholic faith. The same goes for “obscene” comments, actions or gestures. And defamation is punishable by fines or imprisonment. Journalists and media outlets are often ordered to pay exorbitant damages in defamation cases. In 2014, around 30 defamation actions were filed by lawyers or politicians.
