Max Bill, 85, the controversial Swiss artist, sculptor, writer and architect who was a former politician, died of a heart attack Dec. 9 after he was stricken at a Berlin airport while awaiting a flight to Zurich.

He was the son of a railroad official and, from 1927 to 1929, attended Germany's famous Bauhaus school of architecture and applied arts, where he was influenced by the work of Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky.

A leader of the Concrete Art school, he applied what he called a "mathematical" approach to art. His paintings and granite sculptures showed bold geometric designs in what he said was an attempt to "represent abstract thoughts in a sensuous and tangible form. …
