The role design plays to help London work and grow is crucial to shaping the city's future, making lives easier, safer and more pleasurable. This will be our focus throughout the programme, working in joint partnership with the London Transport Museum.
Mike Brown, London's Transport Commissioner, said:
"We take real pride in having fantastic spaces for people to travel in and through. Transport systems need to be functional, but the attention to detail and design apparent in our network shows our customers that we care about their journeys.
"Good design is part of our heritage but is also relevant for today. And, as we unveil new stations such as at Tottenham Court Road or a new Routemaster bus as we have recently done, good design is a core part of our future thinking too - even as we continue to grow as London grows."
Transported by Design started with Design Icons, a search for London's most iconic transport designs, as voted for by you.
People voted from a shortlist of 100 transport designs chosen by industry experts alongside TfL and London Transport Museum staff. To see the full shortlist, visit transportedbydesign.tumblr.com.
A selection of the 100 Design Icons will be showcased across the transport network throughout 2016, starting with the winner, the Black Cab.
