Global Tech Academy’s educational program will use 21st Century tools to benefit leaners by developing student’ s critical thinking skills and increasing engagement in the learning process, in addition to the instruction of the core content areas of English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies taught to national and state standards. Global Tech Academy will also work in partnership with the Office of Urban Education and Educational Equity (OUEEE) as a professional development school for the preparation of urban teachers. The educational program will be focused around the name of the Academy, Global Tech.
Global
The students at Global Tech from Kindergarten through 5th grade will have a choice of two global languages to explore and learn – Spanish or Arabic. The Spanish and Arabic curriculum will not only be taught by teachers on site but projects done between the students at Global Tech and students from partnership schools in countries that speak the language fluently. The social studies curriculum while not only meeting the Michigan standards and benchmarks will also prepare the upper elementary students to participate in a model UN program. Through a partnership with Eastern Michigan University’s political science department, a model UN program will be implemented following the model that is used in schools nationwide to promote understanding of cultures and the issues that are facing countries world-wide. Additionally through partnerships and distance learning, the students at Global Tech will be doing model UN projects with students in Jordan.
Tech
A kindergarten student enters school with excitement and wonder; they have been exposed to technology for the first five years of their life from cell phones, television to computers. For a school to not have these materials, a school can disengage a student from their education. Global Tech Academy will use technology to not just replace traditional materials such as using an interactive whiteboard versus an LCD projector but used to enhance student engagement. Technology will be integrated to enhance content as well as evidenced directly in students’ products and performances. Fifth grade students will be required to develop a digital portfolio of their mastery of common core standards. This portfolio will not only be presented to the school stakeholders but showcased online.
Global Tech Academy also realizes the need for parents, especially those in the Ypsilanti community, to have access to 21st century tools to work with their students and improve their technology skills. Therefore, there will be a technology center open for parents during the school day and into the evening hours to accommodate the needs of all parents. In addition, there will be monthly field trips on Saturdays to see technology in action around the Ypsilanti/Willow Run area such as local universities, automobile plants, airports and other locations that not only give students opportunities to see technology in action but give pride in their community.
