Web Application/Software Developer for Archive-It



The Internet Archive is looking for a smart, collaborative and resourceful engineer to develop the next generation of the Archive-It service, a web based application used by libraries and archives around the world. Archive-It is a self-sustaining subscription service first launched in 2006 and widely considered to be the market leader since its' inception. www.archiveit.org

The Internet Archive is a digital public library founded in 1996 and has the largest publicly available web archive in existence. www.archive.org

Our current system is primarily Java based and we are looking to help build the next-generation of Archive-It using the latest web technologies. We are also looking for someone who wants to dive in and help us figure out better processes, which may include code review, technical oversight and pair programming.

The ideal candidate will possess a desire to work collaboratively with a small internal team and a large, vocal and active user community; demonstrating independence, creativity, initiative and technological savvy, in addition to being a great programmer/architect.

The Ideal Candidate will have

  • 2-3 years work experience in Java and/or Python
  • Experience with Hadoop, specifically HBase and Pig
  • Experience developing web application database back-end (SQL or NoSQL).
  • Good understanding of latest web framework technologies and aspects of web technology and protocols
  • Flexibility and a sense of humor
  • BS Computer Science, or equivalent work experience

    Bonus points for:

  • Experience with web crawlers and/or applications designed to display archived web content (especially server-side apps)
  • Open source practices experience
  • Experience building out a mobile platform

    Healthy Living - Work Transition Program Manager

    We are looking for an outstanding person who is passionate about helping people, a compassionate individual who can also dole out tough love as is necessary, a humanist who believes that qualified people deserve a second chance. This person should believe that with the right support, leadership and motivation, individuals can move their life forward and contribute to their families and their communities.

    The best person for this position, will help build, and then lead the 'work transition' portion of the 'healthy living – work transition' program described below.

    This is a two-year pilot program that is comprised of a partnership between the Bay Area Rescue Mission (a 501 c 3 not-for-profit), the Internet Archive ( a 501 c 3 not-for-profit) and national employers such as Costco. Successful graduates from a drug and alcohol recovery program run by the Bay Area Rescue Mission will go through a 6-month work transition program at the Internet Archive. The work transition program will teach formerly unemployed individuals the skills, habits and behaviors that will become part of a work history for each person. Successful graduates of this ‘healthy living - work transition” program, will then be eligible to interview and then, hopefully secure jobs with national and local employers who are a part of this program. If this pilot is successful, the program will continue past the two-year point and scale across California and the US.

    Funding for this program :

    Funding will be coming from several sources including local foundations.

    Experience required :

    1. A seasoned individual who has experience working with recovering alcoholics, drug addicts and/or victims of domestic abuse. A social worker or addiction specialist with hands on field experience might be a good candidate.
    2. A team leader who has demonstrated that he/she can build, train and motivate a team of up to 25 hourly workers in a production environment.
    3. Above average knowledge of computers, excel spreadsheets and web search skills a must.
    4. Experience with digital photography, image files, books or libraries a plus.

    Location:

    Will be in a safe; secure building owned by the Internet Archive in Richmond California.
