ṬARZI, MAḤMUD
(1865-1933), writer, journalist, politician, and a prominent figure in Afghanistan in the first quarter of the 20th century. Tarzi was hailed as the "father of journalism" and oversaw the bi-monthly Serāj al-aḵbār, for which he wrote most of the articles, and was a translator of Turkish, an essayist, and a poet.

DECORATION
Despite progress in identifying or classifying the features of Persian decorative patterns, few scholars have attempted to explain why particular designs were used in specific periods, regions, or circumstances, even though it can be observed that in a given area or epoch the form and character of ornament are often consistent within a particular craft or different media.
RECENTLY PUBLISHED
Fascicle 1 of Volume XVI

The latest fascicle in the print edition of Encyclopædia Iranica was published in May (ISBN 9781934283332). This fascicle marks the beginning of the sixteenth volume and continues coverage of letter “K.” It begins with the city of KASHAN and ends with the start of the entry on the Shiʿite biographer KAŠŠI, ABU ʿAMR MOḤAMMAD. Other multi-part entries, in addition to KASHAN, are KASHMIR and AHMAD KASRAVI.

LIZARDS

Within Iran, Afghanistan, and Central Asia, lizards inhabit a wide variety of biotopes, from Caspian forest habitats to active sand dunes. Although most species are diurnal, species of geckos comprise a nighttime fauna in many habitats. Lizards have many morphological adaptations that suit them to the substrates they inhabit, from specialized toe-pads in vertical rock-face dwellers to fringed-toes in loose-sand runners. Some burrowers have lost digits and entire limbs.
