Two Police Officers On Administrative Leave After Friday's Pepper Spray Incident

Two Police Officers are on adiminstrative leave after the pepper spraying of non-violent protestors on the UC Davis Quad Friday afternoon. A press conference was held yesterday to address the events and was announced early Sunday afternoon. Hundreds of protestors used SMS, twitter, and facebook to gather with only an hour's or so notice.

Yesterday, Chancellor Linda Katehi and UC Davis Police Chief Annette Spicuzza held a press conference to announce their response to Friday's events. At the press conference, Chancellor Katehi issued a statement before answering questions with Chief Spicuzza. Meanwhile, protestors gathered outside of the building after being denied entrance to the small room in which the press conference took place.

From inside the press conference, protestors could be heard banging on the building and chanting. 20 minutes into the press conference, protestors entered the building and the press conference ended early. After demanding that the conference move to the SciLec so that that students could participate, the protestors moved out of the building and surrounded Surge II, where the conference was held.

Mrak Demonstrators Kicked Out

Demonstrators inside Mrak Hall were evicted earlier this afternoon after administrators closed at 2:30pm, two and a half hours earlier than the regular public closing time. The demonstrators called for and held a general assembly later in the evening at 4:45pm to determine further actions.

Administrators evacuated the Mrak Hall staff at roughly 2:00pm and then proceded to close the building to the public at 2:30pm. It was at this point that the administration and 30 or so police, some of who were in riot gear, confronted the 18 or so demonstrators that had been in Mrak since yesterday afternoon. The demonstrators left the building after a short informal discussion.

UC Davis Strikes - 11.15.2011

What started as a rally on the UC Davis quad evolved into a student occupation of Mrak Hall, the administrative building on the UC Davis campus. Students are currently occupying the building, which the administration has decided to leave open for the time being.

The UC Strike Rally on the UC Davis Quad.

Starting at 12pm noon earlier today, students and faculty gathered around a stage and public address system set up in the East Quad of the UC Davis campus. A crowd that grew to over 500 people listened to various speakers ranging from undergrads to professors who spoke on issues ranging from policy brutality at various occupy movements around the country to austerity measures that have caused increases in student fees and program cuts.
