Blu RayWelcome to TheDVDplayer.com, the consumer's source for information about all things related to DVD watching and DVD players.

TheDVDplayer.com provides information about different types of players to help people enjoy their movie watching as much as possible. Because this is an informational site any information here should not be taken as an endorsement for any products or methods.

Movies on DVDs are encoded with DVD video information and DVD audio data. When this format was first introduced in the mid-1990s they were poised to make VHS players and laser disc players obsolete. DVDs hold significantly more data than a VHS tape and are digital. And, in this day of music downloads, that is an important quality, especially for musical instruments. They have better picture quality and better sound quality. In addition, discs are smaller than laser formats and more convenient to use. While some DVD players also played VHS tapes, commercial VHS tapes have now become a thing of the past.

There are thousands of DVDs on the market and even Internet rental services. There are also many different types of DVD players. When shopping, a consumer should know about the following types of players:

• Blu-ray - these machines play the most technologically advanced format that has recently come to market. A Blu-ray disc holds much more information than a standard DVD and so has better picture quality. Some Blu-ray discs hold so much information that they can allow a user to create their own audio commentary on the movie to share with friends. Blu-ray DVD players once had a format war with HD DVD players, but ultimately Blu-ray became the dominant medium and HD DVD players have disappeared. This technology has improved the quality of home theater systems.

• Universal DVD players - a universal player gets its name because it can play so many types of discs. Not only can it play a Blu-ray desk and a regular DVD, but it can also play SACD CDs which provide discrete channel surround sound for music.

• Multiple disc DVD players - a five-disc player can hold up to five DVDs or CDs at once. These players make any party fun because they allow for back-to-back watching of trilogies or TV shows that are on DVD. In addition, they can substitute for a DJ to provide hours of CD listening.

Consumers can also purchase DVD players for when they are on the go. Portable players are designed for commutes, long trips, or for entertaining children in the back seat of the car. A portable pink DVD player makes the perfect gift for a small girl when the family heads out on vacation for a road trip. For entertainment that more than one child can enjoy look into car entertainment. A dual DVD player allows children to watch different movies on separate screens.

Adults with extremely little room in their luggage who love movie watching can purchase a mini DVD player. These players play 3.5" discs and are even smaller than portable players. Note that 3.5" discs are not for sale on the open market. They must be made using a personal computer.

Also, note that occasionally players will require maintenance. Consumers who have invested in top brands will want to be sure to clean the players in their house for optimum performance. Using compressed air to clean out the inside of the player and a special disc to clean the laser will improve the lifespan of the player.
