Aside from the sheer thrill of gunning down zombies who want to tear your guts out, Left 4 Dead redefines the shooter as a social experience. This is a game that only really works when you play with another human being, but when you do it becomes almost an intimate experience. With voice chat always turned on, the verbal banter swings wildly between shouts of joy and exclamation to panicked screams for help. Often times the tide between these two can turn within seconds. Then there are the hushed tones when the tension ratchets up, or you brace for another last stand. Meanwhile, the incredible replay will have you coming back for more. Zombies are often used in movies and books as metaphors, but in Left 4 Dead, they have only one role: To deliver an incredibly rollicking great time.
