I'm Sheriff Kirk Smith and I want to welcome you to our web page. For those of you who may not be familiar with Washington County let me give you a brief description. Washington County is located in the extreme southwest corner of the state of Utah. We are about two hours north of Las Vegas on Interstate 15. Our county seat is the City of St. George and it sits at an elevation of about 2,500 feet. Our county population is approaching 140,000 and we are known as one of Utah's fastest growing counties. Our climate is mostly desert and we average over 300 sunny days a year. We have a large population of retirees and offer more than 11 golf courses with varying degrees of difficulty. We are a mecca for the outdoor enthusist offering equestrian activities, rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking and a world class marathon which is held each year in October. We have several beautiful lakes nearby where boating, water skiing and jet skiing are popular activities. We are the gateway to several of America's finest national parks including Zion, Bryce Canyon and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. In fact, the majority of Zion National Park is located within Washington County. Washington County enjoys a relatively low crime rate and has been recognized as one of Utah's safest counties to live in.
