The Alvin Fernald Series, by Clifford Hicks, was published 1960 -1986.  Alvin, often controlled by his "Magnificent Brain", tried many roles - Great Inventor, Secret Agent, Cryptographer, TV Anchorman, Pollution Fighter and Master Disguiser.  He even was named Mayor of his home town, Riverton, Indiana, for one day!  Alvin was joined in all of his adventures by his best friend, Shoie Shoemaker (the Mightiest Athlete in Roosevelt School) and his little sister, The Pest (who always seemed to get Alvin out of whatever trouble the Magnificent Brain got him into!).
