Pragmata 2 Hasn’t Been Greenlit Yet, but Director Yonghee Cho Would “Love to See a Sequel,” If It Were Only Up to Him

Pragmata director Yonghee Cho would "love to see a sequel" to Pragmata, but it's not entirely up to him.

For anyone who has followed the video game industry since, oh, about 2019, it's been clear that Capcom is on a generational run of simply being unable to miss with commercially and (mostly) critically successful games. A run that's continued even when introducing brand new franchises like Pragmata, which arrived on PC and consoles earlier this year, earning critical and commercial success with the game hitting 1M copies sold in just two days. Naturally, when a game has that kind of smash success, questions of a sequel arise, and while there's nothing greenlit yet, game director Yonghee Cho has made it clear he's on board.

Speaking to Gamesradar, when first asked about the chances of a sequel, Pragmata producer Naoto Oyama, in the same interview, gave a fairly typical and understandable response, explaining (via an interpreter) that he of course doesn't know what the future holds, but that he's presently still focused on Pragmata itself, which only released a little more than a month ago. "What I'm focused on is just trying to get as many people to experience Pragmata as I can," Oyama said.

When Cho was pressed on the topic with the addendum that if he could simply make the choice himself about whether a sequel happens, he made his personal desire on the matter clear. "Of course I'd love to see a sequel. But I'm not the only one who decides, so unfortunately I can't really comment beyond that."

Gamesradar adds that Cho and Oyama were quick to follow up on that comment, with Cho stressing that this was his "own personal opinion," and Oyama asking, "Please don't take that line out of context." Capcom's PR, who was also present for the interview, reiterated the point for good measure.

So clearly, Capcom doesn't want to give the impression or even hint at the impression that a decision has been made on a sequel. It's doubtful that the topic hasn't come up, as everyone who would collectively make the choice (not just Cho), has certainly considered what a sequel to Pragmata would look like, should it happen, but there's nothing set in stone yet.

A few weeks after it hit 1M copies sold at launch, Pragmata reached 2M copies sold as the game continued to improve with post-launch patches to make it even more graphically impressive. It's clear there's an audience for this game, so it's just a matter of whether all of Capcom's decision makers align with Cho.
