Nat Horne has lived in Hell’s Kitchen for over 60 years and is often to be found shooting the breeze with neighbors on the stoop of the apartment that has been home since the 1950s. Here, the dancer, choreographer and teacher shares his West Side Story.

So, what’s your New York story? Born here, or just arrived?
I came here from Richmond, Virginia in 1954. I wanted to be a dancer, and I wanted to dance on Broadway. My father was a pastor, and he didn’t want me to be a dancer, so I left one Sunday when they were all in church. That morning my brother Robinson said “if you’re going to leave, this is the time to do it.” I left with another pastor from Richmond who was coming to New York for a visit. He asked why did I have two suitcases with me and I told him “you know I like to change clothes.”
