SS. Saviour Church

All that remains today of the Chiaramonte building are external architectural elements: the zigzag portal of the old palace and traces of overhanging mullioned windows with two lights. The interior of the palace, facing the façade, was converted into a church. In 1664, extension work was carried out and in 1794, Pietro dell'Orto adorned it with stucco and arabesques.

The splendid polychrome high altar is in marble commesso. On the back wall are stucco statues of the Benedictine nuns Scholastica and Fara and, above them, the busts of Placido and Benigno, young disciples of St Benedict. Also in the apse area is the altar of Saints Martha and Mary Magdalene, whose altarpiece was painted by Andrea Carreca in the 17th century.

The parapets of the painted wooden choir stalls, works from the mid-18th century, come from other churches in Erice that no longer exist and replace the original ones of the same workmanship that have been lost. After being closed for about 80 years, the church was reopened for worship in 2017.
