  • Accidental Aesop: While the game's main point is about insecurity, it serves as a deconstruction of the Cool Kid-and-Loser Friendship trope. The loser is driven by a psychotic hatred and jealousy of the cool one, constantly seeking to one-up her for any and every perceived slight. Even when they're forced in a life-threatening situation, the loser can't overcome her petty hatred. The message? Women hating on other women will just make both of them unable to be happy or live a decent life.
  • Ass Pull
    • Violet finding out the truth about Sarah and Clara's deaths in the Golden Ending because Clara telepathically showed her the truth offscreen.
    • How nobody found Clara's corpse in the school well for a year? Even worse, Mika didn't know there was a well despite being the class president.
  • Complete Monster: Sarah Motou was a plain, if spiteful and manipulative girl in life, but became something much, much worse in death. Envying her best friend Clara Shizuka for her newfound popularity, Sarah chooses to dwell in self-loathing and rejects all of Clara's attempts to reconnect. When she tries to murder Clara at prom night only to accidentally stab herself during the struggle, Sarah rejects Clara's mercy, killing her and dumping her body in a well before dying of blood loss. Sarah's spirit awakens one year later, manipulating Mika Kawaguchi and setting her up to kill her friend Violet Mizushima because she wants to prove that losers can't be friends with popular girls.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: J19 appears in the Golden Ending as a ghost. Jerimin 19 would end up comitting suicide years later.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: The game tries to make you believe Violet and Clara deserve what happened to them because they're "spoiled, pretty and popular". The problem is that, despite being popular they are kind and considerate (if only a bit naive) to their best friends, so blaming them for actions beyond their control is pretty unreasonable.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic:
    • Mika is this in the endings, considering how she was willing to endanger Violet and side with the Big Bad just because she couldn't stand being in her best friend's shadow. In one of the endings she only lets go of her petty hatred after Violet kills herself to free Mika from the cursed school.
    • When Mr. Oshiro tells Clara about how lonely Sarah felt, we're supposed to sympathize with Sarah because she was left behind by her best friend after she became popular. Ignoring how Sarah rejected all of Clara's attempts to reconnect, killed her out of petty jealousy and admitted that she loved the idea of getting popular more than she loved Clara, this falls flat. Even J19 tells Clara that she shouldn't feel sorry for Sarah since she brought it all on herself.
  • Wangst: Sarah, who never stops whining about how unfair it is that she's "lost everything" even as she tries to murder Violet and did kill her own best friend over the pettiest reasons ever.
