- Allegedly Optimistic Ending: The ending is supposedly a happy ending where Spike finally gets the mechanic job that was denied to him due to how he lacked personhood under Equestrian law. The only problem is that the ending all but states that Spike is still legally classified as a pet and that the speciesist law that denies personhood to non-quadrupedal, non-ungulate creatures is unchanged. To further drive the point home, the ending implies that Spike is only "working" at the power plant thanks to legal chicanery that treats him showing up for his shift as a pet being dropped off by its owners to a pet daycare or grooming facility.
- Audience-Alienating Ending: Readers tore into the ending for how it rendered Spike's struggle for personhood completely moot and the mean-spirited nature of how Spike's situation was treated seriously throughout the story but turned into a punchline at the end.
