Diplomacy (1959)

Go To

  • Complacent Gaming Syndrome: Russia and Turkey tag-teaming into a super-powerful alliance, nicknamed "the Juggernaut," is basically on everyone else to prevent. If the other powers of Europe are on the ball and aren't too busy squabbling among themselves over Belgium or something, it can be beaten... but if they aren't, and the Juggernaut starts rolling, much like the trope that bears its name, it can be very difficult to stop!
  • Character Tiers: Expect a fair number of posts on any Diplomacy forum to discuss about which power is the best.
    • In press games, the tiers from bottom to top are Italynote , Austria, Germany, England/Turkey (disputed), France/Russia (ditto).
    • In no-press or "Gunboat" games, Italy moves up a few tiers, England moves down a few, and Russia moves into the garbage can.
  • Funny Moments:
    • Many (the most common would be a fleet ending up in very odd place, as an Italian fleet in St. Pete, which has happened), but the best of them all is probably The Coast of Moscow, as recorded by the game's creator. (If you're confused, here's a map.)
    • In The Game of Diplomacy, Richard Sharp reports an American game where Germany was in the most perfect position a player could be in: he was aware that France's player had been schtupping England's wife behind his back, and France knew that he knew. The rest of the players, who knew France to be a ruthless and ambitious backstab-merchant were flabbergasted when he meekly supported Germany to the hilt, enabling Germany to win in record time.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: While an American game, the early heart of the hobby was in English postal 'zines, and a lot of the original lingo and strategy were developed by English players.
  • Memetic Mutation: While a Cult Classic, Diplomacy is a game that's been out since the middle of the 20th century and played ever since, so there are a few embedded memes.
