Toopy and Binoo (Western Animation)
We love to laugh! We love to play! That's us, Toopy and Binoo!

Toopy and Binoo is a Canadian children's television series created by the Quebec-based studio Spectra Animation (also known for Teletoon shows like Fred's Head and Kid Paddle) for Treehouse TV. It is based on a series of children's books by French-Canadian author Dominique Jolin, originally titled Toupie et Binou (Washington and Deecee in English).

The show centers around an anthropomorphic mouse named Toopy (voiced by Frank Meschkuleit) and his best friend, a mute plush cat named Binoo. Each episode follows the playful, nonsensical adventures created by Toopy and Binoo's imaginations. Toopy is the only character who speaks. For the most part, he enthusiastically describes their adventures.

Individual segments are approximately five minutes long but are frequently grouped as one thirty-minute episode on television and DVD releases.

In 2013, the show received a live-action spin-off called Toopy and Binoo: Vroom Vroom Zoom, which reimagines the titular duo as puppets.

An 80-minute theatrical film based on the franchise was announced in 2021. It was released in Canadian theaters on August 11, 2023, and later in the year aired on Treehouse during Boxing Day.

A revival series, subtitled Fabulous Adventures, premiered on October 25, 2025, now airing on CBC instead of Treehouse.

This show provides examples of:

  • Baby Morph Episode: "Baby Toopy" involves around Binoo trying to take care of Toopy when he turns into a trouble-making baby.
  • Balloon Belly: Binoo gets one in Bistro Binoo from eating invisible foods (corn on the cob, a stack of pancakes as big as Binoo and a whole pumpkin pie as big as Toopy’s armspan) and then, he comically blows up like a balloon and floats away. Eventually, Binoo burps very loudly and deflates.
  • Banana Peel: In Toopy Goes Bananas, Toopy slips on a banana peel and goes flying in the air until he accidentally squished the banana with his bottom upon landing.
  • Christmas Episode: The show had four Christmas-related episodes: "Santa Toopy" where he and Binoo dress up as Saint Nick and deliver slippers to everything in their house, "Christmas Eve" where the two try to invite all of their friends to a Christmas party, "Toopy's Present" which has Toopy bringing Christmas to the summer to give Binoo a new water wing, And in the 22-minute mini-movie. "Big Bad Christmas", the two help The Three Little Pigs deliver a present to the grumpy Big Bad Wolf who hates Christmas.
  • Conjoined Eyes: Toopy's eyeballs are connected in the middle.
  • Cute Kitten: Binoo is a living toy cat who is adorable.
  • Don't You Like It?: In "Big Bad Christmas", the Three Little Pigs try to give the Big Bad Wolf a Christmas present. Instead of accepting it, he just gives it back to them and slams the door in their faces, apparently because he doesn't like Christmas.
  • Dream Walker: Toopy does this to Binoo twice:
    • In "Diaper Dream", Toopy enters Binoo's dream to figure out what's causing his nightmare.
    • In "Dreamland", Toopy enters Binoo's dream to figure out what's making him so happy.
  • For Halloween We Are Going As Each Other: In "Pumpkin Party", Toopy and Binoo find a costume party going on inside a jack-o-lantern. Binoo dresses up as Toopy and Toopy dresses up as Binoo.
  • Gag Nose: Both "Toopy's Nose" and the "Magic You" segment "Nose Switch".
  • Getting the Baby to Sleep: "Diaper Dream" revolves around Toopy and Binoo trying to get the baby monster in Binoo's nightmare to stop crying. It eventually turns out that he had a dirty diaper.
  • Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: Toopy wears a shirt, but no pants.
  • Keet: Toopy is excitable and talkative.
  • Living Toys: Binoo is a sentient stuffed cat.
  • Mystery of the Missing Socks: In the episode “Sock Safari,” Toopy comes in from playing in the snow and invites Binoo to join him, only to discover Binoo is missing one of his socks. The search begins in the bedroom, with Toopy dramatically scanning the room through binoculars, but the “missing” sock reveals itself to be very much alive, peeking out from behind the door and slithering under the bed. The chase leads into a dresser drawer and through a portal to a whimsical laundry-themed dimension filled with fresh-smelling clotheslines, floating soap bubbles, flying underwear, and zipper-shaped flowers. At the top of a waterfall, Binoo finds the other sock; realizing the pair missed each other, he lets them happily reunite and swim together before they pop back onto his feet at home. Just as Toopy is ready to head outside again, he realizes he’s now missing his mittens—prompting Binoo to take charge of a brand-new safari hunt.
  • Name and Name: Toopy and Binoo.
  • The Noseless: Happened in five episodes, four times to Toopy:
    • "Toopy's Nose" (also happened to Binoo)
    • "Magic Mirror" (one that was doing a trick the real Toopy can't do)
    • "Cloud Gazing" (a reused scene and an original scene later)
    • and the two "Magic You" segments, "Nose Switch" and "Bunny Ears", the former had the Ms. Polar Bear, Mr. Snowman, and Mr. Elephant characters missing their noses, and the latter not just Toopy missing his nose, but also, his right ear and his tail.
  • Rodents of Unusual Size: Toopy is much larger than the average mouse.
  • Sentient Stars: One appears in "Night Light", chased by Toopy and Binoo who are seeking to have it be a night light for Binoo. It doesn't speak, but Binoo had figured out it wants Toopy and him to follow it.
  • Shaking the Rump: Toopy did this a few times, like:
    • In "Rockin' Toopy", Toopy shakes his rump two times, while standing on the piano that the dragon is playing. He did this again while showing his dance performance.
    • Toopy did this again in "Bistro Binoo" while asking Binoo to wiggle his tail.
  • Shout-Out: There is an episode called Land of the Lost.
  • Solid Clouds:
    • In "Toopy's Bed", one of the beds Toopy tries out is a cloud in the sky. It's after he settles down on the cloud that he realizes he misses his old bed and goes back to it.
    • In "On and Off", one of Toopy's hiding places is inside a cloud. Binoo and the furniture happen to be on another cloud floating towards the one Toopy is hiding in.
  • The Speechless: Pretty much anybody who isn't Toopy in the original episodes. However, the half-hour specials and the theatrical movie have other speaking characters.
  • Title: The Adaptation: The movie is just called Toopy and Binoo: The Movie.
  • Vicious Vac: Exaggerated in "Magic Woosher", where Toopy creates a vacuum cleaner out of an empty cereal box and a sock that sucks up everything from him and Binoo's house (and later even themselves) to the entire planet of Earth and outer space.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: There are a few episodes where Toopy and sometimes Binoo would play dress-up and assume female roles, such as a princess and finding the best dress to wear for a ball. The show doesn't treat this as anything out of the ordinary.
  • Worm in an Apple: In "Worm Circus", an entire worm circus is located inside an apple. Toopy and Binoo join the clown act by juggling.
