The Wizard of Oz (1991)

Go To

The Wizard of Oz is a half-hour Animated Adaptation of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by Golden Films, originally released in 1991.

The adaptation is more faithful to the source material than the 1939 film, but still has a few changes of its own.

Tropes:

  • Abled in the Adaptation: Like with many adaptations, the Wicked Witch of the West has both of her eyes intact when she was one-eyed in the original book.
  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: The Cowardly Lion's only clothing is a crown.
  • Adaptational Backstory Change: Much like in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1986), the Tin Woodman's origin is changed so that the Wicked Witch of the East cursed him to be magically turned into tin rather than following his literary counterpart's origin of the curse making his axe gradually dismember him and having the body parts he lost replaced with tin prosthetics until nothing remained of his original body.
  • Adaptational Ugliness: The Winkies in the original book were not that different from the Munchkins in physical appearance, but here resemble anthropomorphic warthogs.
  • Adapted Out: A lot of characters from the original book are omitted, such as the Munchkin Boq and his family, the Queen of the Field Mice and the Hammerheads.
  • Apologetic Attacker: Dorothy actually apologizes to the Wicked Witch for causing her to melt, not that the apology does anything to assuage the witch's anger at her.
  • Disabled in the Adaptation: The Wizard wears glasses when he didn't wear any in the books, though the fact that he's willing to give his only pair to the Scarecrow suggests his eyesight might not be that bad.
  • Disney Death: Toto gets a brief one where he appears to fall through the trap door in the house as the twister is carrying them away and leaps back into Dorothy's arms not long after she starts grieving the apparent loss of Toto.
  • Expy: The Wizard in this adaptation bears a striking resemblance to Principal Weatherbee from Archie Comics.
  • Really Was Born Yesterday: The Scarecrow informs Dorothy that he was made two days ago.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Invoked by the Wizard, who obliges the Scarecrow's request for a brain by giving him his spectacles and telling him that they'll help him be smarter.
