The Stinky & Dirty Show is a preschool show developed by Guy Toubes based on the Stinky & Dirty books by Jim and Kate McMullan. Its pilot came out on January 15, 2015 on Amazon Prime Video before officially premiering on September 2, 2016. It is the second Animated Adaptation of the books, following a series of fairly faithful short films produced by Weston Woods Video for Scholastic. To quote the description:
"The adventures of best friends and unlikely heroes, Stinky the garbage truck and Dirty the backhoe loader, a dynamic and hilarious duo of resourcefulness that learn that when things don't go as expected, asking "what if" can lead to success. "
The first season, composed of 10 episodes, came out on September 2, 2016. The second season has been divided into parts, with part 1 on November 23, 2017, a Valentine's Day special on February 13, 2018, part 2 on August 14, 2018, and part 3 on March 22, 2019.
Not to be confused with Stinky from Hey Arnold!.
This show provides examples of:
- All-CGI Cartoon: Like most shows animated by Brown Bag Films, the show is entirely CGI.
- Alliterative Title: The episodes “Water Ways”. “Tower Topper”, “Runaway Rover”, and “Movie Makeover”.
- Animated Adaptation: This cartoon is based off of the Stinky and Dirty book series.
- Art Shift: Dirty’s draw-thinks are depicted in 2D animation resembling, of course, drawings scribbled in dirt.
- Catchphrase:
- "I know what you're doing...you're thinking! Let me help, let me help!"
- And of course every episode has several instances of Stinky or Dirty asking "What if...?"
- Christmas Episode: “Snow Problem” (where Stinky and Dirty need to clear snow from train tracks so Fast can deliver Christmas trees) and “Sleigh Riders” (where Stinky and Dirty find a crashed sleigh full of presents).
- The Eponymous Show: The Stinky & Dirty Show.
- Epunymous Title: A few episodes have one, although giving the series’s naming scheme they require some explanation- “Seeing Red” (on Red the racecar), “Sweepy Clean” (on “squeaky clean” and Sweepy the street sweeper), “Silent But Stinky” (on one of the title characters), “Going Nowhere Fast” (on Fast the train), and “Rock and Rollin’” (on Rollin’ the steamroller).
- Meaningful Name: Just about everyone in the show has one; Dirty is always covered in dirt from digging, Stinky smells like the garbage he picks up (not that anyone seems to mind), and other characters include Tall the crane and Sender the mail truck.
- Name and Name: The Stinky & Dirty Show, with Stinky and Dirty being the characters' names.
- No Focus on Humans: Humans are present in the show's universe, but they never show up onscreen. Not even Santa Claus was allowed to show his face in the Christmas Episode.
- One-Word Title: The episodes “Lost!”, “Squeak”, “Landlocked”, and “Detour”.
- Painted CGI: The show is computer animated, but has designs that have 2d lines on them.
- Pun-Based Title: A few episodes have one- “Can You Dig It?” (on Dirty’s digging). “Rolling Blunder” (on “rolling thunder”), “Concrete Plans” (where Stinky and Dirty mess up some just-poured concrete), “Snow Problem”, “Tree Amigos”, “Up! Up! And Parade!”, “Drive-In Movers”, “The Missing Stink” (on “the missing link”), “Traffic Jam-Boree”, and “Soap Opera” (which involves a puddle of spilled soapy water).
- Questioning Title?: “Can You Dig It?”
- Rhyming Title: A few episodes have one, including “Jump at the Dump”, “Screen Clean”, “Miles and Miles of Go City Smiles”, “Missed on My List”, “Rover All Over”, and “Smash Crash Trash”. The title of “Mighty Night” also almost rhymes.
- Saying Sound Effects Out Loud: Characters say “vroom” when they get going, “screech” when they apply their brakes, and even “idle” when they’re sitting there waiting.
- Sentient Vehicle: Stinky and Dirty are a sentient garbage truck and backhoe respectively.
- Show Within a Show: In one episode, the duo turns out to watch a drive-in movie called Jumpy's Big Jump, about a stunt cycle named Jumpy. A later episode has them watching the sequel, Jumpy's Bigger Jump.
- Steam Never Dies: Despite the otherwise-modern setting, the one rail character is a steam locomotive.
- Thinking Tic: When seriously thinking, Dirty scratches his cab roof with his back bucket. Stinky always spots this and says his Catchphrase for the occasion, cueing a draw-think.
- Two Shorts: Each episode is made up of 2 11 minute segments.
- Valentine's Day Episode: "Love Notes/Love Is In The Air" follows this trope. The first segment involves trying to find Sender in order to give her a Valentine's Day message. The second segment involves helping Chopper show his Valentine's Day banner around the city.
- Verbed Title: The episode “Forklifted”.
