Springtime for Thomas (Western Animation)

Springtime for Thomas is an animated Tom and Jerry short released on March 30th, 1946 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It was directed by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera.

One sunny spring day, Jerry tries to start up another chase with Tom, only for him to not take the bait, as he has fallen head over heels for a female cat by the name of Toodles. Jerry doesn't want the chases to stop, so he forges a letter to Butch (posing as Toodles) inviting him for tea. Now Tom and Butch compete to try to gain her affections....

Tropes:

  • AcCENT upon the Wrong SylLABle: When Butch reads the letter that Jerry planted:
Butch: I've always admired your... fis-a-cue. (physique).
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Interruption: Just as Butch tells Toodles that he's expecting Cupid's arrow at any minute, Jerry and his shoulder devil stab him in the butt with a needle.
  • Cardiovascular Love:
    • After Toodles kisses Tom, a cartoon heart appears on his chest with a hammer loudly ringing it as if it was an alarm bell.
    • In Jerry's case, his entire body turns into a heart.
  • Cartoon Bug-Sprayer: Butch sprays himself with one of these as if he were applying cologne.
  • Cooking the Live Meal: Butch hits Tom through some croquet hoops until he lands on a BBQ's rotisserie and rotates so he resembles this trope.
  • Cupid's Arrow: Rather then an arrow, a tiny cupid hits Tom with a Hyperspace Mallet. Also see Astonishingly Appropriate Interruption.
  • Dinner Deformation: After Tom gets a croquet ball slammed into the back of his head as he was drinking a long glass of lemonade, the drinking glass pokes out from the back of his head.
  • Empty Swimming Pool Dive: Butch chases Tom off a high diving board into a swimming pool, only for Tom to drink all the water within a few seconds, with nothing but an empty swimming pool for Butch to land in.
  • Flower-Pot Drop: Tom launches a flowerpot into Butch with a swing.
  • Foe Romance Subtext: Jerry gets jealous when Tom spends all of his time with a girl cat, and introduces Butch to break the two up.
  • Frame-Up: Jerry and his shoulder devil stick a needle in Butch's bottom causing him to leap up in the air and an ignorant Tom pulls it out and holds it when he comes back down.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: It's shown that Jerry is really jealous with Tom being more focused on Toodles than he is on chasing Jerry. His shoulder devil is also green.
  • Good Angel, Bad Angel: No angel appears, but a devil version of Jerry that's half his size convinces him to break up Tom and Toodles so he can get his friend back.
  • Kiss Up the Arm: Tom does this with Toodles with his eyes closed only for Butch to get between them, Tom only stopping when he notices the smell.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Tom realizes that battling against Butch to get to Toodles just isn't worth it.
  • Improvised Weapon: Butch's finishing blow is using a guitar like a baseball bat to send Tom flying.
  • Literal Ass-Kicking: This is how Jerry tries to instigate Tom for their usual chase, only for it to have no effect on the love struck Tom.
  • Literal Metaphor: When Jerry's shoulder devil tells him that Toodles has Tom eating out of her hand, Tom is eating chocolates being thrown by her while behaving like a dog.
  • Love Letter Lunacy: Jerry baits Butch into visiting Toodles with a fake invite in her name.
  • No-Sell: Tom hits Butch in the head with a croquet mallet hard enough to break it, but Butch is physically unaffected by it, but still gets immediate revenge by throwing Tom into the swimming pool.
  • Not So Above It All: After all the effort of breaking up Tom and Toodles and just as Tom and Jerry were back to their usual chase, Jerry immediately falls for a girl mouse and proceeds to ignore Tom.
  • Pain-Powered Leap: Butch does this after Tom pins him with a needle.
  • Pain to the Ass: Jerry pins Butch in the rump with a needle in an attempt to get Butch angry at Tom.
  • Projectile Kiss: Toodles blows a lipstick mark at Tom with it making contact with Tom's lips and physically kisses him. The female mouse at the end does the same to Jerry.
  • Returning the Handkerchief: Toodles intentionally drops one with Tom moving in a flash to pick it up just before it touches the ground and returns it to her.
  • Shout-Out: While inside his trash can, Butch can be heard humming "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" from The Wizard Of Oz.
  • Silent Whisper: This is how Jerry's shoulder Devil explains his plan on how to break up Tom and Toodles.
  • Squashed Flat: Tom slams a statue's cymbal into Butch's face, causing his entire face to be perfectly flat.
  • Wingding Eyes: Tom has hearts in his eyes when starring at Toodles.
  • You Say Tomato: Butch the cat reads a fake love letter addressed to him.
Butch: I have always admired your fis-i-que.
