Royal Cat Nap (Western Animation)

Royal Cat Nap is an animated Tom and Jerry short released on May 8th, 1958 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It was directed by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera.

This is the fourth and last cartoon from the "Three Musketeers" arc.

The king of France tries to take a nap but is woken up by the Musketeers Jerry and Tuffy, which angers the monarch and orders his guard Tom to prevent the mice from disturbing his nap again or else he will have the cat beheaded.

Royal Cat Nap contains examples of:

  • Agony of the Feet: In one attempt to get Tom in trouble, both Jerry and Tuffy fill the floor with thumbtacks which Tom steps on and forces him to run outside the castle to yell in pain to avoid waking the king up.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: The king makes very clear to Tom that if his nap is disturbed again, the former will have the latter executed. This terrifies Tom into guarding the room.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Both Jerry and Tuffy are OK with messing with Tom, but when this causes the king to wake up and order Tom to be executed, the two mice realize their mistake and immediately lull the king back to sleep to save Tom.
  • Lazy Bum: The king accuses Tom of goofing around while Jerry and Tuffy disturbed his nap and threatens to punish him if it happens again.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero!: Tom prevents the mice from entering the King's bedroom by locking up all the doors and swallowing the key, but when the mice get around this by shooting an arrow through the keyhole, Tom is hit by said arrow and is unable to run outside to yell in pain due to him having locked all the doors earlier and ends up yelling in the room, waking the king up.
  • Right Behind Me: When the king goes to sleep after threatening Tom to not let anyone to disturb his nap again, an annoyed Tom immediately mocks him by making faces and sticking his tongue out to the monarch, believing him to be asleep, only for the king to wake up and hit him on the head.
  • Save the Villain: Despite their enmity, both Jerry and Tuffy save Tom from being executed by the king, and once Tom's life is saved, the cat thanks the mice and the three resume their fight.
