Mighty MonsterWheelies is a 2024 Netflix-original animated series by DreamWorks Animation, and is an adaptation of the Universal Horror monsters.

Taking the monsters to their youngest demographic yet, the series takes place in the vehicle-populated town of Motorvania. When trouble brews in the city, be it floods, fires, or chaos by mischievous villains like Phantom Freeze and the Invisible Van.

This calls for the Mighty MonsterWheelies! A team of six monster-vehicle hybrids, they’re here to show that anyone can be a hero, as unexpected as one might be. The crew includes firetruck leader Bolts Frankenstein (Tru Valentino), mechanical tow truck Axyl Bride (Grace Lu), lighthearted motorcycle/helicopter Sonnie Dracula (Cal Brady), playful garbage truck and street sweeper Sweeps Wolfman (Matt Lowe), bubbly lifeguard ATV Gil E. Creature (Sandra Saad), and gentle ambulance Wraps Stretcher (Chester Rushing).

The show premiered on October 14, 2024. A second season premiered on May 5th, 2025.

MonsterWheelies, trope formation!

  • Adaptational Friendship: In the original iteration of Dracula, Dracula and Van Helsing are the villain and one of the protagonists of the movie. However, in the show, Mayor Van Helsing now asks for Sonnie Dracula’s help due to them being a hero as part of the Mighty MonsterWheelies team.
  • Adaptational Heroism: In contrast to the antagonistic monsters of the original Universal Monsters canon, the Mighty MonsterWheelies are instead superheroes for Motorvania.
  • Adaptational Romance Downgrade: Unlike the original Frankenstein and his Bride, Bolts and Axyl are merely friends and teammates in the show, with no romantic attraction from either side.
  • Adaptation Name Change: Downplayed for many. Many of the characters have their classic monster name instead turned into their last name, with wholly new last names:
    • Frankenstein’s Monster is Bolts Frankenstein.
    • The Bride of Frankenstein is Axyl Bride.
    • Dracula is Sonnie Dracula.
    • The Wolf Man is Sweeps Wolfman.
    • The Creature from the Black Lagoon is Gill E. Creature (also given a Gender Flip in this adaptation)
    • The Mummy is given the biggest name change, as Wraps Stretcher.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: The standard design for the Bride is of a standard skintone, often slightly paler than standard. In contrast, Axyl is bright purple in color.
  • Adaptation Species Change: The Mighty MonsterWheelies are made monster-vehicle hybrids in this series.
  • Ambiguous Gender: In contrast to the other monsters, the press release for Sonnie’s personality bio gives them no pronouns, only being described by their name.
  • Bad Humor Truck: Downplayed. Phantom Freeze, a living ice cream truck, means no malice with her hypnotic music, even though she has a tendency to use it for petty reasons, like winning a game or getting people to buy her ice cream. She's just driven to be the center of attention and doesn't take rejection well.
  • Bandage Mummy: Parodied. In reference to the concept of this trope, Wraps, being based on the classic movie monster of The Mummy, is an ambulance and medical worker, while still keeping his mummy appearance through bandages as such.
  • Bigfoot, Sasquatch, and Yeti: The episode "Where in Motorvania Is Bolts Frankenstein?" introduces a new type of monster: Abominable Snowcrafts. A mix of yeti and snowmobiles, they are territorial and stubborn, preferring to be alone and insisting that they don't need help, even if they do.
  • Blindness in Media: The episode "Tank Us Outta Here" introduces the blind cave explorer motorcycle Carly Cruz. She relies on Tank, her sidecar guide dog, to help her navigate. She also explains that she can make out the difference between light and shadow as the limit of her visual capabilities.
  • CamelCase: This is how "MonsterWheelies" is written.
  • Chummy Mummy: Wraps is based on the Universal Monster version of The Mummy. Being half-ambulance, he has a soft demeanor and good bedside manner with his patients.
  • Classical Movie Vampire: Fitting Sonnie having Dracula as their monster inspiration, they sport a widow's peak and wings that resemble a lined cape.
  • Creative Closing Credits: The end credits of an episode play over an angular 2D image depicting a scene from that episode.
  • Daywalking Vampire: Sonnie, fitting their name, has no problem with daylight, doing many rescue jobs in the daytime unhindered.
  • Defanged Horrors: The monsters are the heroes in this situation. The series was created with the point in mind that anyone can be a hero, regardless of how they look.
  • Dracula: Sonnie Dracula is a half-vehicle take on the classic Dracula mold. They transform from a motorcycle to a helicopter in reference to the original's bat transformation, has a noticeable widow's peak, and is colored in grays and blacks. However, Sonnie also takes from bats in general in design, with noticeable ears and a sonar ability.
  • Driving Up a Wall: One of Gill E.'s abilities is the "Creature Crawl", which turns her tires treaded, letting her scale walls.
  • Epic Hail: Mayor Van Helsing has access to a remote control that sends a green lightning bolt into the monsters' tower. This charges a giant bell in the tower's belfry that can be heard through the whole town, letting the team head back for mission status.
  • Extendable Arms: Bolts Frankenstein's main special ability is his "ladder-arms", which can reach out to great lengths. His most typical use for them is getting catteries out of trees.
  • Fish People: Gill. E Creature, being influenced by the Creature From the Black Lagoon, is partially fish person in design, mixed with an ATV that has an aquatic secondary mode. Notably, she lacks eyebrows, has thick lips, a mohawk-like front fin, and webbed fingers.
  • Frankenstein's Monster:
    • Bolts Frankenstein is a combination of the classic Monster design with a fire truck. His monster half has green skin, a noticeable brow, a black flat top haircut, thick head stitches, and his signal lights replace the bolts of the original.
    • Axyl Bride is a take on the Bride of Frankenstein, combined with a tow truck. She has the black beehive with a jagged white stripe through the center and much smaller stitches on the side of her head. Unlike the standard Bride model, she's bright purple instead of pale skin-toned, and has an artificial limb.
  • Friendly Neighborhood Vampire: Sonnie is based on the Universal Movies iteration of Dracula, thus making them vampiric in design. Despite this, they are very light-hearted, always willing to brighten the mood even in dire situations.
  • Gender Flip:
    • Gill E. is made into a female character to give a gender balance to the team, in contrast to the original male Creature from the Black Lagoon.
    • Sonnie, based on Dracula, is made gender ambiguous, rather than male like the original Dracula.
    • Phantom Freeze is female, in contrast to The Phantom of the Opera, who she takes her inspiration from.
  • Heat Wave: The episode aptly titled "Heatwave" focuses on a heatwave going through Motorvania. The vehicle nature of the town leads to far more dangers, with tires starting to melt onto the burning roads, citizens overheating, and the MonsterWheelies being unable to easily bring others to safety due to the burning roads and buildings making it impossible to access the town.
  • Ironic Name: Sonnie's name sounds like "sunny", one of the classic weaknesses of vampires.
  • Irony: Bolts is a variant of Frankenstein's Monster, a character famously afraid of fire. He's combined with a firetruck, the number one vehicle forced to interact with fire.
  • Jekyll & Hyde: The take of the original Jekyll and Hyde is adapted into the series as Dr. Jalopy and Mr. Ride. Dr. Jalopy is a kindly scientist that maintains the junkyards, coming up with inventions to help the town. However, when he gets too focused into his inventions, he loses himself and his Mr. Ride persona develops. He loses his glasses, his wires pop out of the sides of his head like crazed hair, he gains a wrecking ball on his crane hook, and he's more focused on finishing his invention than any damage it might cause. When he's snapped back into Dr. Jalopy, he has no realization of what happened, only seeing the damage with no idea how it happened.
  • Literal Surveillance Bug: One of Wraps' special abilities is to call out Sand-E, a scarab beetle-designed quadcopter drone. He uses her for scanning areas for both vehicles and objects, and she can also dispense objects out for usage to help others, such as heat packs and Wraps' air pump.
  • Logo Joke:
    • The Netflix Original logo is created through Bolts spinning a donut, creating the logo in the tire tracks.
    • Both the Universal and DreamWorks Animation logos are created through the electricity of the Tesla coil screen.
  • Monster Mash: As seen in the trailer and press for the show, the series is an adaptation of the Universal Horror monsters. Included is Frankenstein, the Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, the Wolfman, the Mummy, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon as the heroes, with adaptations of Van Helsing, The Phantom of the Opera, The Invisible Man, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde as various citizens and antagonists.
  • Mind-Control Music: Phantom Freeze has built-in organ pipes, fitting her ice cream truck vehicle type and her Phantom of the Opera basis. She can control others to do her bidding, though most of the time it's just to get people to buy her ice cream. A snap of her fingers breaks them out of their trance, and the last thing they remember is her demand towards them.
  • Quarter Hour Short: Episodes are about 12 minutes in length.
  • Self-Care Epiphany: The episode "Overheated" sees Bolts overexerting himself attempting to help others, causing his engine to overheat, and forcing him on rest to not damage himself further. Through the episode, he learns that everyone needs to relax once in a while, and asking for help is entirely fine.
  • Sentient Vehicle: Motorvania is populated by living vehicles. The majority of citizens are cars and trucks, with a few scooters as younger citizens. Boats also populate the town in Blacktop Lagoon.
  • Shout-Out: Recurring minor character Subrina is a yellow submarine.
  • Shrink Ray: The episode "From Mighty to Mini" focuses on a shrink ray created by Dr. Jalopy, in a way to speed up trash collection at the junkyard. He accidentally gets caught in the crossfire of the beam, shrinking himself. Bolts, Sweeps, and Sonnie also find themselves shrunk, leading to a trek across the junkyard to attempt to reverse the beams.
  • Super-Speed: One of Sweeps' abilities is the "Full Moon Zoom", which lets him gain a huge burst of speed, leaving others in the dust and a trail behind him.
  • Super-Strength: One of Bolts' abilities is "Franken-Strength", which gives him an added boost onto his already powerful strength.
  • Swiss-Army Appendage: Axyl has an arm that in her base mode is a pincer, rather than her standard arm. This arm can be swapped out with different tools for different jobs, such as tweezers, a socket wrench, and a welding torch.
  • Title Reading Gag:
    • The episodes "Heatwave" and "Overheated" both see Bolts, who reads the title cards at the beginning of the episodes, reading these titles in an exhausted voice, also adding a "Phew!" at the end of them. Both episodes focus on overheating in various ways.
    • The episode "Keep on MonsterTruckin'" has Bolts take on a deeper voice with a Southern accent, mimicking episode highlight character Sprocky.
    • The episode "From Mighty to Mini" has Bolts pitch his voice up high when saying "Mini", in reference to the Shrink Ray plot of the episode.
    • The episode "Lost Geode Road" has Bolts whisper the title, in reference to the mystery at hand of the episode.
    • The episode "No Way Out Park" has Bolts read the title in a quivering voice, hinting at the fear at hand in the episode.
    • The episode "Trading Places" has Phantom Freeze cut in and read the title, fitting the nature of her taking the place of others in the episode.
  • Token Flyer: Sonnie is the only member of the team with flight capabilities, being a motorcycle with an alternate helicopter mode.
  • Transforming Vehicle:
    • Sonnie is a motorcycle that can transform into a helicopter for rescues.
    • Gill E. is an ATV that can transform into a submersible mode for underwater work.
  • Treasure Hunt Episode: The podcast called Bedtime Stories has an episode focusing on characters from the show. "Blacktop Lagoon Bedtime Treasure Hunt" has Axyl, Sonny, and Sweeps trying to figure out who the owner of a lost treasure chest is.
  • Two Girls to a Team: Axyl and Gill E. are the only two girls on the Mighty MonsterWheelies team, via a Gender Flip for Gill E.
  • Werewolves Are Dogs: Sweeps, despite being based on The Wolf Man, is given a lot of domestic dog traits. He chases squirrelwheels, wags his tail, likes playing with balls, is good at digging, and is tentative about the car wash. Despite this, he's also very moon-based in his theming, keeping him with some classic werewolf traits.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: The episode "No Need for Speed" is a plot reference to Speed for a younger audience, focusing on a bus (a living one in this case) forced to keep at a fast pace through the city.
  • Wonderful Werewolf: Sweeps is a half-werewolf garbage truck and street sweeper. Despite having The Wolf Man as his basis, he has the kind and enthusiastic of a gigantic puppy.
  • Working-Class Werewolves: In comparison to the side-jobs of the other MonsterWheelies, Sweeps, the member based on The Wolf Man, is a hybrid garbage truck and street sweeper, causing him to perform more menial labor in his work compared to the others.
  • Wrench Wench: Axyl is one of two girls on the team, and is the team's mechanic. Both a scientist and an inventor, she does the most repair work for the team, along with helping others with major repairs like slipped sockets or faulty breaks.
  • Zoomed-Out Reframing Gag: Used for a majority of the humor of the episode "From Mighty to Mini". Due to Bolts, Sweeps, Sonnie, and Dr. Jalopy being shrunk down by Dr. Jalopy's Shrink Ray, the four of them have to make a long and perilous trek to the other end of the junkyard. Zoom outs reveal that they barely made it halfway before getting tired and what looks like a giant tire about to barrel over them is going at a snail's pace...as are the four of them.

In the Mighty MonsterWheelies episode "Heatwave" Gill.E burns her feet or should I say tires on hot Sand when she gets out of the water.
