Fit to Be Tied (Western Animation)

Fit to Be Tied is an animated Tom and Jerry short released on July 26th, 1952 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It was directed by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, and produced by Fred Quimby.

After Jerry removes a nail from Spike’s paw, the bulldog is so grateful he makes himself the mouse’s protector. Now, every time Jerry is attacked by Tom, all he has to do is ring a bell and Spike comes running to beat the cat up.

Sound familiar? But wait, there’s a twist! A leash law has just been enacted, so poor Spike is tied down in the backyard. Tom takes advantage of the situation to get even with both Spike and Jerry, but how long will it last?

Tropes:

  • Dinner Deformation: Tom makes Jerry eat the bell he was using to summon Spike, so Jerry’s body take the form of the bell.
  • Just Whistle: Spike gives Jerry a bell to ring whenever he needs his help.
  • Kick the Dog: After hearing that all dogs will be on a leash for public safety, Tom has gotten the perfect opportunity to abuse and taunt Spike.
