Eliza—carrying her son Harry—and Simon Legree (with his bloodhounds) engage in a wacky foot race, with Eliza using various means and tricks to try to escape Simon. Near the end, Lil' Eva — seeing Eliza struggling to escape from her position in heaven — calls on Mighty Mouse to save them. After a one-sided fight with Simon, Mighty Mouse rescues Eliza and returns her and Harry to safety, to their and the other Black slaves' joy.
See also "Uncle Tom's Bungalow", one of the Censored Eleven that focuses on Uncle Tom, Eva, and Topsy (and has Eliza in a minor role).
This cartoon has examples of the following tropes:
- Age Lift: Harry is five in the original novel but here is portrayed as a baby.
- Big Damn Heroes: Mighty Mouse not only beats up Simon and his hound dogs in a one-sided fight, but rescues Eliza and Harry before they plunge over a waterfall and carries them back to safety on their ice floe.
- Blackface-Style Caricature: All the Black characters are drawn in blackface-style with big pale lips and very dark skin, and speak (the few times they do) in exaggerated Black drawls.
- Bottomless Magazines: No matter how many shots Simon makes, he never runs out of bullets — and is never seen reloading the pistol.
- Bubble Shield: After Simon falls into the icy water, he tries to shoot at Eliza again — but the wet gun's bullets are suddenly encased in bubbles after being fired. They float up and then pop over his head and fall on him, to his annoyance.
- Bullet Catch: Simon shoots Mighty Mouse at point blank range. When the smoke clears, Mighty Mouse is bouncing the round bullet in one hand, which he then throws into Simon's eye.
- Circling Birdies: Simon sees stars after Mighty Mouse hits him in the eye with the bullet he caught that was shot at him.
- Curb-Stomp Battle: Once Mighty Mouse arrives, he easily dispatches of Simon's bloodhounds and Simon himself, even catching the bullet shot at him before punching Simon through the walls and dropping a bell on his head. Simon is left reeling before he and the steamboat he's on waterfall go plunging over a waterfall.
- Dastardly Whiplash: Simon Legree is dressed in all black with a black handlebar mustache and serves as the villain of the short.
- Dogs Love Fire Hydrants: One of Eliza's attempts to distract the bloodhounds chasing her is to pull out a fire hydrant and leave it in the snow; the dogs immediately gather around it, giving her time to continue running.
- Early Installment Character-Design Difference: Mighty Mouse is in a red suit with a yellow cape and briefs, rather than what would be his later design of a yellow suit with red cape and briefs. He also doesn't speak at all.
- Every Car Is a Pinto: In this case, the steamboat is a Pinto — after it plunges over a waterfall, it blows up in a burst of flames and dust.
- Fluffy Cloud Heaven: Lil' Eva is a resident of a fluffy clouded heaven and has wings, which she uses to fly to a phone to call on Mighty Mouse to rescue Eliza and Harry.
- Handcar Pursuit:
- Simon chases Eliza and Harry's train with a handcar on the rails.
- The steamboat Eliza and Harry use is run by a handcar style pump.
- Inevitable Waterfall:
- After being beaten up by Mighty Mouse, Simon and the the steamboat he's on go over a waterfall — and promptly blows up at the bottom.
- Eliza and Harry on an ice floe are about to plunge off a waterfall when Mighty Mouse grabs the whole floe, picking them up and flying them to safety.
- Instant Ice: Just Add Cold!: After being jabbed in the butt by a swordfish in the river, Simon Legree plunges into a frozen river and bobs up frozen in place in a solid block of ice. His bloodhounds push him along the ice until Uncle Tom rings the break bell; the dogs use the break to try to thaw him out by flapping towels. He breaks out shortly after the break.
- Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy: Simon Legree shoots repeatedly at Eliza but never hits her or Harry — even when he's close enough to hit at point-blank range. At one point his bullets fly backwards while he's shooting and bop one of his hound dogs in the nose and butt, sending him running backwards and crashing into the other dogs.
- Offscreen Teleportation: Eliza tries to run into a door on the steamship to escape Simon — who had been on a boat in the water — and opens it to find him on the other side. She panics, slams the door, and runs off — leaving Harry suspended in the air until she grabs him.
- Pain to the Ass: While Simon Legree is in the water trying to fix his gun, a swordfish swims up and jabs him in the backside, causing him to fly into the air and plunge through the ice — and freezing him into an ice block.
- Steam Never Dies: Eliza and Harry use a steam engine powered by watermelons to try and escape. Justified as, presumably, the short is set in the mid-1800s when trains would be powered by steam (though not watermelons).
- Sudden Soundtrack Stop: The music stops after Simon Legree shoots at Mighty Mouse and the smoke clears to show Mighty Mouse has caught the bullet — and restarts after Mighty Mouse hits him in the eye.
- Swordfish Sabre: When Simon Legree is in the water attempting to use his gun, the fish conspire underwater before a swordfish swims up and jabs him in the backside, sending him flying into the air.
- Uncle Tomfoolery:
- Uncle Tom shuffles in at the start of the cartoon, wagging his finger and trucking—a jazz dance move—to the Dixie-style music.
- Eliza and Harry fuel the train they attempt to escape with watermelons, which fly out of the smokestack and hit Simon Legree in the face while he's chasing them on a handcar.
