Donald's Off Day is a 1944 Classic Disney Short directed by Jack Hannah that stars Donald Duck.
Donald has a game of golf planned, but a sudden thunderstorm forces him to stay indoors. Trying to pass the time with a medical book, he quickly becomes hypochondriac, with some help from Huey, Dewy, and Louie.
Donald's Off Day contains examples of the following Tropes:
- By the Lights of Their Eyes: The nephews turn the lights on and off to make Donald think he's having blackouts. Every time the lights go off, only Donald's eyes are visible; the last time they do, his eyes briefly grow huge.Donald: [walking with his eyes closed] I can't see! Oooow, ooooow! Oh me, oh my...! [bumps into a toy train] Ouch! [opens his eyes, pushes the train out of the way, and keeps on being "blind"] OOOW, OOOOOW, OOOOOOOW! [faints]
- Failed a Spot Check: Donald reads that a coated tongue can be a very dangerous sign. He looks in the mirror, sees his coated tongue, and thinks he's sick, not realizing his tongue is coated with the licorice he was just eating.
- Heart Beats out of Chest: Parodied when Donald's nephews trick him into thinking he's terminally ill. This includes sneaking a hopping toy rabbit that's attached to an air pump under his blanket and pumping air in various ways, making Donald think his heart is acting out this trope and he's done for. He finally figures out the ruse shortly after the toy jumps out from under the blanket.
- Induced Hypochondria: First, a radio ad tells Donald he's likely very sick and needs a doctor. He becomes even more sure of this on reading about various symptoms in the medical book, to the point of ignoring logic and reason. Donald's nephews, seeing their uncle's anxiety, prank him into thinking he's sick to the point of impending death.
- Rain, Rain, Go Away: Donald's golfing outing is rained out. In fact, every time the rain stops, it starts again the moment Donald steps out the door.
- Sequential Symptom Syndrome: As Donald reads a medical book, he comes upon a coated tongue as a symptom of something serious. He looks at his tongue in the mirror and is shocked that it looks coated (not realizing it was because he was eating licorice). He next reads that the following symptom is blackouts, and that's when the nephews get in on the act and turn off the lights, making Donald think he's blacking out.
