For smoothies, friends, and lots of fun
Where YOU are customer number one!
Astroblast! is an American Adobe Flash-animated Preschool Show by Soup2Nuts, that begun airing on Sprout in July 2014. It is based on a book series by Bob Kolar. It focuses around a crew of Funny Animals who run an intergalactic smoothie café called the Frosty Star, and the problems that often arise among them. Comet, the leader, is an easily excitable dog. Halley is a pink rabbit who makes high-speed deliveries. Sputnik, a pig, tends to get overly passionate about things. Radar, a monkey, is well-meaning but usually lazy. Jet, an alligator, speaks entirely through movement. And Sal, the level-headed one, is a three-eyed octopus who usually has friendly advice.
Not to be confused with the Atari 2600 game of the same name.
Astroblast! contains examples of:
- Ageless Birthday Episode: In one episode, Comet tries to compete with others by making his own presents for Sputnik's birthday. However, Sputnik's age isn't mentioned during the episode.
- A.I. Is a Crapshoot: When Sputnik tried to modernize the Frosty Star in one episode, chaos ensued. Among other problems, they couldn't even prepare ingredients without being chased down by a horde of misguided cleaning droids.
- An Alien Named "Bob": One of the show's recurring characters is literally an pink alien called Bob.
- Batman Can Breathe in Space: Notably, Halley makes her deliveries on an intergalactic surfboard.
- Big "NO!": Comet delivers one loud, prolonged 'no' at the end of Smoothie Operator. He also does this in Who Let The Stuffie Out?.
- Call-Back: Given "Kapowsers" is the final episode of the series, it features multiple call-backs to previous episodes.
- Catchphrase:
- Multiple characters have "Glark" whenever they are shocked or suprised.
- Sal has the classic "As my Gam Gam says..." spiel in almost every episode.
- Companion Cube: Several one-off ones pop up time to time; among them, Sputnik's Zorkian Peach plant "Zorky".
- Diegetic Soundtrack Usage: The tuba player at one point plays the theme song during Just Peachy.
- Downer Beginning: At the beginning of the episode Puzzle Hunt, the gang is bummed because there's a meteor shower outside and they can't go to their picnic on Planet Red.
- Fictional Holiday: Be Mine has a Valentine Day's esc holiday called "Friendship Day".
- Four-Temperament Ensemble:
- Sanguine: Comet and Halley, both of whom are easy-going and optimistic.
- Choleric: Radar, being the more practical one and, while not easily irritable, is far more feisty than the above two.
- Melancholic: Jet, due to rarely speaking and having a sense of heedfulness.
- Phlegmatic: Sputnik and Sal, being the rational and level-headed ones of the group, as well as the kindest.
- Funny Animal: The main cast consist of a dog, a rabbit, a pig, an alligator, a monkey, and a three-eyed octopus.
- Furry Reminder:
- Comet (a dog) wags his tail when he's super excited.
- Sputnik (a pig) snorts sometimes when she laughs.
- Radar swings on objects like real-life monkeys do.
- Keet: Comet, as he is highly energetic.
- One-Word Title: Portmantitle of "astro" + "blast" that's also The Place, as the characters live in the Astroblast Space Station, but the show mostly focuses on the smoothie cafe, Frosty Star.
- Only Sane Man: Sal, who often gives advice to help the others realize the solution to that episode's lesson (in fact, that's probably the sole reason he's here).
- Pink Girl, Blue Boy: Halley wears a pink dress while Comet dons a blue jumpsuit. Admittedly, though, it's Sputnik who's (arguably) more feminine than Halley.
- The Place: The characters live in the Astroblast Space Station, but again, it's more often focused on the Frosty Star.
- Plucky Girl: Halley is a brave and determined young rabbit.
- Shout-Out:
- There is an episode titled "Bend It Like Radar".
- Sick Episode: I Feel Fine has Sputnik catching "Astro Space Pig-initis", something that is characterized by green spots on the tongue, funny feelings in the mouth, fatigue, muscles not working well, and constant face-changes.
- The Speechless: Jet, who speaks by movement and props.
- Theme Tune Roll Call:
- Two Girls to a Team: Halley and Sputnik are the only girls in the main cast.
- Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Halley in one episode, who only sprained her ankle but realized she enjoyed being taken care of. To say it drove the rest of the crew absolutely haywire is an Understatement.
