Lapis is a young teenage girl who strives to become a holy knight. However, there are two problems. One, she is a magician, cursed ones that holy knights seek to exterminate. Two, her magical ability is as good as the average human, which is to say not at all. Still, she decides to practice sigils by carving them on the ground, hoping they can help her qualify... but somehow, she accidentally summons the first magician, the Dark Lord. The mysterious woman promises to lift the curse on all magicians, in exchange for Lapis' help to retrieve the fragments of her shattered heart. And so, Lapis starts her thrilling journey of becoming a knight and recovering the Dark Lord's heart.
The Dark Lord's Confession (마왕의 고백, Mawang-ui gobaek) is a fantasy Korean webtoon, authored by Topseoung. It was serialized in 2022 and is still ongoing. The official Webtoon can be found here![]()
Come closer, listen to the Dark Lord's tropes:
- 13 Is Unlucky: There's actually a total of thirteen disciples. Averna, the Holy Saint, was Deitasterra's last disciple and the traitor who overthrew her master.
- The Ace: Mapharam is the best apprentice knight in Area Academy. Be it physical or academic exams, she'll always come out on top.
- Academic Athlete: At first sight, Mapharam seems like a dumb jock with how carefree she is. She's actually the top student in the academy, both combat and academic-wise.
- Action Girl: It's easier to count who isn't one, actually. Out of the main cast, Binari is the only one with weak fighting skills, and that's because she's The Medic.
- Aerith and Bob: The webtoon is filled with names like Mapharam, Binari, Asagan, Deitasterra, Averna. And then there's generic names like Martin, Karl, Charlotte and Hugo.
- Age-Gap Romance: The Second Dark Lord, Calla, is over one thousand years old when Lapis summoned her. Calla loves Lapis, or rather, Deistaterra, as the Lovey-Dovey Summoning Sigil Lapis used to summon her requires the summoned one's love for the caster. Lapis later is revealed to have feelings for Calla too.
- Calla and her master Deitasterra was also this, as Deitasterra is at the very least several centuries old when Calla was accepted in as a disciple.
- All-Loving Hero: Lapis is a compassionate girl who wishes to save those in misfortune, especially magicians. She almost got in danger from saving a little bluebird, who later becomes her pet, and she continues to be friends with Enoch even after learning the full extent of his Fantastic Racism towards magicians like her.
- Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Evelyn is a tall, intimidating black-haired girl and one of the best students in the academy.
- Amazonian Beauty: The webtoon is very generous with muscular women. A few examples include Mapharam, Calla and Dame Jeremiah. Mapharam in particular will take all the chances she's got to show off her gains.
- Amnesiac Hero: Lapis didn't remember anything but her name when she first appeared in front of Binari and Mapharam at the age of seven. She slowly regains memories as the pieces of heart are gathered.
- Anachronism Stew: The general setting seems like your usual fantasy with a dash of historical, but occasionally the characters will dress in obviously modern clothes.
- And I Must Scream: The Daphnes are transformed into silver trees after being tortured from the disease, but they didn't quite escape their horrible fate. The dark blood flowing from the trees indicate that the Daphnes are still alive. They retain a fragment of their ego, just enough to be aware of their current state but not enough to think or do anything. It turns out, however, that this is a mercy, as they don't actually suffer in this state.
- Anger Born of Worry: Dmitriy scolds other people a lot, mostly Astrad and Calla. Despite that, he's clearly concerned for their wellbeing. When Astrad collapses from his deteriorating health, Dmitriy threatens to beat him up so he would finally get some rest.
- Animalistic Abomination: The dark beasts are, true to name, monstrous beasts born from dark power. Some followers gain the ability to transform into dark beasts thanks to a complex ritual.
- Animate Dead: The four veiled "followers" with crowns in the Garden of Daphne arc are corpses of four Disciples. Their name is revealed to be Cayde, Raileen, Cecil and Leonard.
- Answer to Prayers: Deitasterra used to have many devotees praying to her when she was still the Dark Lord. She granted their wishes with her dark power and bestowed blessings upon her people.
- Anti-Magic: Deitasterra's power allows Lapis to negate divine power. However, she can't control this ability yet, and the toll it takes on her body is hard to bear.
- Armor-Piercing Response: Lapis' answer stuns Evelyn after the latter said she lack the resolve to kill.Lapis: I'm resolved to kill myself to make others happy, is that not enough...?
- Art Shift: The comedic moments are drawn with a simple, sometimes chibi style compared to the usual elaborate art.
- Ashes to Ashes: Hugo can manipulate dust as well as any plants grown by him.
- Ashes to Crashes: Hugo's initial plan is to turn Hardekhal's people into dust. Theodore changed the victims into silver trees instead to at least keep them from being scattered away.
- Asleep in Class: Karl falls asleep everywhere and anytime, even if it's in the middle of a course.
- As You Know: Many parts of the lore are explained through dialogues, some even start with the exact words in the trope's name. An example is the introduction of Area Academy and the entrance exam.
-
Author Appeal: According to Topseoung, the reasons why The Dark Lord's Confession was born was because of 4 reasons: a handsome queen, the hero journey of a girl, a Bisexual Love Triangle with two guys and a girl as love interests, and the most important characters being all women. She also mentioned in one post that a girl holding the world's fate in her hands is her cup of tea, and another that Calla is exactly her type. - Ax-Crazy: Enoch is a gentleman, but when magicians are involved, he becomes a ruthless killing machine. His dedication in exterminating magicians and his Dissonant Serenity horrifies even some of the knights and holy knights, like Hector.
- Back from the Dead: This is something the Dark Lord refused to do, as it goes against the world's nature and would ultimately cause the unravelling of reality. Hugo wishes to bring Zephyros back nevertheless, even if it means dooming the world.
- Badass Boast:
- Hugo declares that Lapis can never win against him in the garden of Daphne. The creepy black-and-silver trees really makes the scene spine chilling.Hugo: As long as we are in this garden, you cannot defeat me.
- Lapis answers Hugo's mockery with a badass declaration. At least until it turns into a childish taunt.Lapis: A walking disaster? Fine then. Just you wait, Hugo. I'll show you want a real disaster is!
- Hugo declares that Lapis can never win against him in the garden of Daphne. The creepy black-and-silver trees really makes the scene spine chilling.
- Bait-and-Switch Character Intro: The webtoon plays with this trope a lot with many characters.
- Enoch almost killed Lapis when he first found her, then visibly softened up after seeing the child in her arms. However, he is in fact as ruthless as he seems towards magicians; he's just incapable of comprehending that someone protecting a child could be a magician.
- Mapharam's first appearance makes it seems like she despises Lapis, a magician. It turns out she's just worried that her friend could be caught by the knights surrounding the area, and yells at her for coming to such a dangerous place.
- Grendel looks like a shady man with how he watches Lapis and her friends in the library. He quickly reveals himself to be Hugo, the Dark Lord's seventh disciple. The initial suspicion turns out to be correct for a different reason: he is the Deer-Horned Follower, and the reason behind so many of her miseries.
- Because You Were Nice to Me:
- Lapis is attached to Binari and Mapharam because they were the first to show her kindness.
- Mapharam in turns is highly protective of Binari, a kindhearted girl who treated Mapharam warmly even though Mapharam only responded her with disdain when they were younger.
- Dmitriy took care of Astrad when he was a poor sick child. Years later, Astrad found Dmitriy (who's going by his alias Demian) and clung to him everywhere he goes.
- Berserk Button:
- Touch Lapis' loved ones and she will make it her personal goal to kick your ass.
- You really shouldn't lay a finger on Binari's family, as while she's not a fighter, she's still more than willing to throw hands with you.
- Mapharam doesn't care if people insult her, but insulting Binari is an unacceptable crime.
- Enoch has two triggers: magicians, and his older brother Theodore, who was also a magician.
- Charlotte is really sensitive about her position as a royal princess and descendant of Averna, as she feels (accurately) that her family looks down on her.
- Beware the Nice Ones:
- Enoch, a gentle holy knight, can slaughter magicians without so much as flinching.
- The local healer Binari is capable of hurting people if they harm others. She attempted to kill Hugo by stopping his heart after learning about his evil deeds. It didn't work as it was her first time doing such a thing.
- Lapis might seem like a sweet innocent girl, but she will fight tooth and nail to protect everyone, especially her friends and loved ones. Not to mention she's Deitasterra, the first Dark Lord, so it's generally a bad idea to provoke her unless you're ready to suffer her wrath.
- Big Damn Heroes:
- Calla often plays the role of a knight in shining armor when Lapis is in a predicament. Her first appearance also involves her annihilating a dark beast that almost killed Lapis.
- Mapharam saves Lapis right before she got bitten by a dark beast.
- Enoch, seeing Lapis' reluctance to kill the magicians, smites them so she can avoid the dirty work.
- The Big Guy: Mapharam in the Hanla trio, and Enoch if you count him in Lapis' friend group.
- Bisexual Love Triangle: Lapis has three people interested in her: Enoch, Hector and Calla. She's only noticed the last one though.
- Bishie Sparkle: Handsome men and women, especially the proud ones like Astrad, Mapharam and Calla, are often accompanied by a cloud of sparkles and flowers.
- Bitch Alert: Princess Rosetta's appearance practically screams "Evil," from her chilling smile to her dagger sharp eyes.
- Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Hugo appears kind and tender to both Lapis and the readers. In truth, he is the mastermind behind everything, from the Han family's destruction to Daphne's creation.
- Black Bead Eyes: The characters are drawn with simple dot eyes when they're in chibi style.
- Black Eyes of Evil: Magicians' sclera turn black when they get agitated or when they're almost completely consumed by their dark power. Lapis's eyes turn completely black when she's having a flashback to her time as Deitasterra, possibly because she was incapable of emotion at the time.
- Black Magic: Magicians can cast magic with dark power, a power comparable to divine power of holy knights. This magic, however, will slowly consume them, and at the end, magicians will be turned into dark beasts.
- Blaming the Victim: Magicians are often subjected to this. Most people consider it their fault for not avoiding magicians like a proper Lampas citizen should, even though a lot of them never came in contact with a magician before the moment they got cursed.
- The Blank: Deitasterra is depicted with a blank face, or having only vague facial figures. She is finally drawn with her eyes opened in chapter 107.
- Bleed 'Em and Weep: A magician has to be killed as practice for the apprentice knights. Lapis volunteers when the magician is revealed to be Martin, the man who has taken care of her when she first arrived in Lilyfield. She planned to teleport him away, but his mark is already too dark and he's doomed to transform into a dark beast very soon. The only consolation she can offer him is a painless death at the hands of someone he loves. She breaks down to tears afterwards.
- Blemished Beauty:
- Astrad has a small scar on his lips. His right hand also lacks a pinky finger. It was chopped in exchange for Hector's safety.
- Dame Jeremiah has a scar running down her face. It doesn't stop her from looking good.
- Blessing: The dark power bestowed upon people by the Dark Lord was originally a blessing. It was tainted with despair after Deitasterra was betrayed by Averna.
- Blond, Brunette, Redhead:
- The Hanla trio: Lapis (blonde), Mapharam (green) and Binari (pink).
- Hugo, Zephyros and Dmitriy also, with Zephyros being the blonde, Hugo with ginger brown hair and the black-haired Dmitriy.
- Blood from Every Orifice: Lapis tends to suffer from bleeding orifices when her dark power gets out of control.
- Blood Knight: You can't find anyone who loves battles more than Mapharam in the academy. Her friends have to physically restrain her when a sparring contest was declared.
- Blow You Away: Astrad has the power to manipulate wind. He is exceptionally skilled at aerokinesis since before he received divine power.
- Bluebird of Happiness: Myosotis, the tiny bluebird Lapis rescued early into the story, is her pet bird and local comedic relief.
- Blue Means Cold: Blue-haired Hector can control ice.
- Boisterous Bruiser:
- Mapharam is the main fighter of the group in charge of the heavy lifting. She's also the rowdiest by far.
- Astrad, while not exactly a classic bruiser, can be count as one too. He's described by Demian as "a golden retriever the size of a mansion" once.
- Boyish Short Hair: Mapharam, Binari's mother, Dame Jeremiah and the late Queen Sinclair all have short hair.
- Break the Cutie: Lapis starts out anxious but still bright and hopeful. Her optimism slowly gets worn out the farther you get into the webtoon. After a hundred chapters, Lapis can barely smile like she did at the beginning anymore.
- Break the Haughty: Princess Charlotte made her entrance by ordering Enoch to kneel down in front of a crowd. Later, she suffers a humiliating defeat at the hands of Princess Rosetta, though it's somewhat sad given that this is implied to have been her entire childhood.
- Breather Episode: The humorous exam and festival arcs serve as fillers after (and before) a darker arc.
- Bridal Carry: After Calla collapsed in the tower, Lapis carries her upstairs in her arms. How she's able to carry a muscular woman two heads taller than her without keeling over is a mystery on its own.
- She carries an injured Mapharam in a similar way in the Third Star Arc.
- Brilliant, but Lazy: Karl is noted to be a great student, but all he ever does in class is sleeping. He's rarely ever shown to study like an apprentice knight is expected to do. This turns out to be the results of his trauma. His people all died, his kingdom pretty collapsed and became a vassal state of Lampas. He used to be a diligent person, but there's nothing for him to work hard for anymore.
- Bunny-Ears Lawyer:
- For such a goofy sleepyhead, Karl is a competent fighter with a sharp mind. He rarely exhibits his edge outside of dire situations, but even in those rare moments one can easily see how he became an apprentice knight in the first place.
- Astrad strikes others as an over-energetic, cheerful hunk. Despite that, he's a holy knight, one of the most powerful figure in Lampas. His perception is also a complete contrast to his simpleton-like attitude.
- Butch Lesbian: Mapharam is a muscular handsome girl, and she's far more eager to show off to her female admirers than to conform herself to men's standards.
- Call-Back:
- The Lovey-Dovey Summoning Sigil Lapis accidentally used to summon Calla is mentioned later in Professor Demian's class. He reveals that the sigil can only be used when the target loves the summoner, hinting at Calla's feelings for Lapis as Deitasterra, her master.
- The laughing dog in chapter 2 makes its appearance again in chapter 88.
- The fire horses in Zycarphus ruins arrive at the Garden of Daphne fifty chapters after their last appearance. They are brought to the garden by Calla, who has been absent since the beginning of the Third Star arc.
- Came from the Sky: Deitasterra is originally a meteorite from the sky. Lapis also fell from the sky when she first appeared in front of Binari and Mapharam.
- Candlelit Ritual: To be accepted as a trainee in Area Academy, you have to lit a candle with divine power.
- Caring Gardener:
- Binari is noted to be fond of gardening as well as taking care of others. This caring tendency influences her special skill—healing.
- Hugo is a kindhearted caretaker who loves plants and gardening. In truth, he is the man behind almost all the misfortunes Lapis and her loved ones have experienced, though he used to be this trope.
- Cast from Stamina: Magic is casted from the own caster's health and energy. Using too much magic will make the caster exhausted and unable to move.
- Cast Full of Gay:
Word of God has confirmed that most of the main cast are bisexual, except for a few of them who she sees as gay. - Cast Full of Pretty Boys: It's probably easier to count who isn't a good-looking man here. Some fans even joke that excellent looks are the standard to choose knights and disciples.
- Casting a Shadow: Dmitriy's power is darkness manipulation.
- Cast of Snowflakes: There's no two characters with the same facial figures. Even those in the same family have distinctive appearance from each other.
- Celestial Body: Deitasterra's body is pure dark with glittering stars like the galaxy.
- Cheerful Child: Monika, Binari and Tan are all sweet as candy. Their kindness is Lapis' solace in her dark moments.
- Cheery Pink: Binari, a petite girl with pink hair and pink clothes, is the cutest, nicest, most optimistic person in the whole story.
- Chekhov's Gun: A lot of seemingly innocuous details turn out to be important.
- The sword Lapis found is not only the sword Hecabe left behind, but also a key to the archives room in the tower in Zycarphus, and the sword Averna used against the Dark Lord.
- One of the questions in Demian's book is about a plague that originated from Karl's country. Later it's revealed that the plague, named Daphne, was directly related to Karl and Enoch, who were present when the dark beast that caused the plague was slain. Karl lost his sister, mother and his country's future because of it, and at the end, he was sent to Lampas as an exchange student. The third star also falls into the Garden of Daphne.
- The fire sigil in Zycarphus ruins is brought to the Garden of Daphne by Calla just in time to help Lapis.
- Chic and Awe: Inverted with Dmitriy. Mapharam, hearing murmurs, expected a good-looking someone and turns around only to find Dmitriy dressed in an absurdly garish outfit. Everyone is baffled at his clothes, and Mapharam can't stop wheezing like a maniac.
- Chick Magnet: Mapharam and Calla attract girls everywhere they go. They know this and enjoy every moment of it.
- Church Militant: Knights are blessed with divine power, and their job is to eliminate dark beasts, magicians and devote their life to the Holy Saint.
- Clap Your Hands If You Believe: The power of prayers and wishes was what created Deitasterra, who was originally a meteorite.
- Cloudcuckoolander: Karl is a total screwball since his first appearance. He falls asleep everywhere, says the most absurd things in serious situations, and even once brings his friends a tea brewed from some kind of poisonous mushroom. He completely drops his happy-go-lucky act in the Third Star Arc.
- Close to Home:
- As a magician living as an apprentice knight, Lapis' life is filled with trauma triggering challenges, from watching her friends collapse from trying to protect her to killing a magician who used to take care of her.
- Enoch is exceptionally brutal when it comes to magicians and his dead brother Theodore. He was tricked into believing that Theodore killed their mother, and the fact that he was a magician was proof of his betrayal. Later on, he killed his brother, who has turned into a dark beast, and only realized it afterwards, not to mention Theodore's blood created the Daphne Plague as well.
- Quite literally in Karl's case. He is Hardekhal's next-in-line leader and a participant in the extermination of the dark beast of Hardekhal. His homeland was ruined, his mother and sister both died, the former from suicide and the latter from the Daphne plague. He resents Lampas and specifically Enoch for enacting this misfortune. Guess where the third star fell in? Hardekhal's central area, the Garden of Daphne.
- Code Name: Grendel and Demian are aliases of two of the Dark Lord's disciples, Hugo and Dmitriy. The first disciple was only known by her alias—Circe—for a long time, until chapter 118. Dmitriy is very frustrated that Calla's nickname is just "Alistair" instead of a mythological name like the others.
- Combat Parkour: As she's quite small and weak, Lapis tends to jump around to dodge her opponent's attacks and wait for a chance to injure their weak spots instead of fighting head-on.
- The Comically Serious: Enoch is so earnestly honest that pretty much everything he does is hilarious (except for those times where he's slaughtering magicians). Try watching him destroying the library's eastern section without falling apart.
- Competing with a Corpse: Quite an awkward case between Lapis and Calla when the dead love Lapis is competing with is also herself in the past.
- Cooldown Hug: Binari often hugs Lapis to calm her down when she's feeling upset. Her hug is also what brought Lapis' ego back after retrieving the second star.
- Cool Sword: There's plenty of them in the story.
- The sword Lapis is using is a sleek, elegant sword that looks like it's made of stars.
- Cosmic Motifs: Stars are the most important motif in the webtoon, along with darkness and light.
- Costume Porn: The author constantly flaunts her drawing skills with amazingly detailed costumes. Even then, she continues to surprise every so often with elaborate gowns, armors and formal attires.
- Creepy Crows: One of the followers can transform into a horrendous crow-like beast.
- Crush Blush: Lapis and Hector blush a lot around their crushes, which are Calla and Lapis respectively.
- Crying Critters: Myosotis, the tiny bluebird, is a big crybaby just like its owner.
- Curse: Magicians suffer from a curse that turns them into dark beasts by consuming their ego.
- Cute Bruiser: A tiny, cute crybaby girl named Penelope turns out to possess the power of muscle augmentation. Her body gains a hilariously muscular physique after her special skill is activated.
- The Cutie: Binari and Lapis both qualify, especially Binari.
- Cynicism Catalyst:
- Enoch only started to become such an extremist after being deceived by his brother and after slaying the dark beast of Hardekhal, who is his brother post-transformation.
- Karl, similarly, was plunged into depression after his homeland's destruction.
- Dance of Romance: Lapis has danced with two of her love interests: Enoch during the ball, and Calla in the festival.
- Dark and Troubled Past: It's probably easier to find who doesn't have one.
- Lapis, Mapharam and Binari are all orphans (kind of, in Lapis' case). Five years before the story started, a dark beast destroyed their town, and in turn, the family they're living in. Lapis, believing it was her fault that the dark beast appeared, ran away and tried to enter Area Academy so that she can avoid harming people more. The other two, meanwhile, spent five years looking for Lapis, hoping that their friend was still alive.
- Hector was the only survivor of the Libere family. His mother was an alleged traitor who killed the Queen, and his siblings died protecting him, who was down with a cold when the purge happened. It was only thanks to Astrad that he was allowed to live as an apprentice knight.
- Enoch's mother, Queen Sinclair was assassinated, and his older brother was revealed to be a magician. He joined Area as a knight to atone to his brother's sins, and finally achieved that by bringing down the dark beast that's wrecking havoc in Hardekhal. The dark beast was his brother, which means he killed his brother with his own hands. What's worse, it seems like his brother still retained consciousness after transforming into a dark beast. Even after becoming a respected holy knight, he's still constantly humiliated by his uncle and by some knights.
- Karl was the prince of Hardekhal, a neighboring country of Lampas. His country has been facing threats from dark beasts and Lampas, who wants to seize his people's land for their own. The dark beast was finally slain, but it brought upon a worse misery for Hardekhal in its dying moments. After his country lost everything, he was "invited" to Lampas as an exchange student in Area Academy.
- Dark Is Not Evil: The Dark Lord is nowhere as sinister as the legends made her out to be: she was quite literally "lord of the darkness" and the origin of all powers, both dark and divine. It was thanks to her blessings that divine power even exists in the first place.
- Death Seeker: While not outright suicidal, Lapis has been growing increasingly less hopeful about her future as the story goes on. Even since before that, she has always contemplated death as a last resort to end her life before she can become a dark beast.
- Deceased Parents Are the Best: Binari's mother, Scarlett's father, Martin and Queen Sinclair are all great deceased parents.
- Defeat as Backstory: The Dark Lord Calla was defeated one thousand years ago before she was summoned by Lapis.
- Defrosting Ice Queen: Charlotte started out as a cocky princess, but then warms up to Lapis and her friends who treat her like an equal, unlike other people who only sees her as a failure of the Royal Family.
- Deity of Mortal Creation: Deitasterra, the Dark Lord and the first magician, was a shooting star that fell upon the continent. Her form and ego was created from the countless prayers people made at the fallen star.
- Determinator: If there's something Lapis has set her mind on, she will do anything to achieve it. In the first chapter, she practices sigils by carving them on the ground until her hands are full of blisters. When facing against Scarlett in the tournament, she's so hell-bent on winning that her organs almost exploded from Scarlett's special skill. And even though she's an underdog in most battles, she never gives up until the end.
- Devoted to You: Calla is willing to do everything for Deitasterra, even if it causes her to be chained up in the Shadow Crematorium for one thousand years.
- Dishing Out Dirt: Dame Jeremiah's power allows her to manipulate everything earth-related.
- Dispel Magic: When Lapis taps into Deitasterra's power, she can use anti-regeneration sigil, which is essentially a magic blocker that erases the manifestation of other people's magic.
- Disproportionate Retribution: Hugo resents Deitasterra for letting Zephyros die, so his solution is to do everything he can to make her suffer. Everyone else calls him out on this.
- Dissonant Serenity:
- Enoch's calm expression as he slaughter magicians is a jarring sight to the eyes.
- Hugo is able to maintain his smile even in the Garden of Daphne, surrounded by death and horror, which is why Binari and later Karl both grow suspicious of him.
- Doomed Hometown: The Han family where Lapis, Mapharam and Binari lived for four years was wiped out by a deer-horned dark beast when they were twelve.
- Doppelgänger Replacement Love Interest: Hugo considers Dmitriy and Astrad's relationship as his way of coping with the loss of Zephyros. Hugo is the only one who thinks so, however. While Calla and Dmitriy acknowledge the resemblance between the two, the similarities aren't about their appearance.
- Downer Ending: Even though most arcs in the story have a heavy atmosphere, the tournament arc and the festival after it both have a bitter end.
- Dramatic Irony: Enoch despises magicians because of his traumatic experience with his older brother. He is attached to Lapis, thinking she wouldn't betray him like his brother did. Unbeknownst to him, Lapis is not only a magician, but also the Dark Lord herself.
- Dramedy: The story can jump from gut-wrenching angsty drama to absurd comedy in the span of a few chapters—or panels, even. Even as the tone becomes increasingly darker, there's still plenty of goofy moments occasionally sprinkled in.
- Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: Lapis' eyes turn dull when she falls into despair, most notably the moment after her "victory" in the tournament. Not wanting to see Lapis losing her sparks, Enoch decides to lend her a hand and kills the magicians instead.
- Karl is a more subtle version of this one. His eyes are drawn with flat color since he was still in Hardekhal, but they are shaded when he's being serious or having other emotions besides his usual nonchalance.
- Eldritch Transformation: When their dark power consume their body, magicians will turn into dark beasts—horrifying colossal creatures who spread misery everywhere they go.
- Electric Blade: Enoch can channel lighting through his weapon. He sometimes uses it to shock enemies and burn them to crisp.
- Excalibur in the Rust: Lapis' sword, the one Hecabe left behind, was completely covered in rust from the first time Hecabe found it. Lapis later restored its former appearance by hitting the rust off, though the process breaks the sword into two. It gets restored properly later, when Lapis finally gets a hold of her regeneration power.
- Elemental Powers: Some knights are capable of wielding an element as their special skill. Mapharam can control fire, Hector can create ice, Astrad manipulates wind, Jeremiah can control anything earth-related, Dmitriy and Zephyros are a darkness and light duo. The royal family's special skill is usually plant manipulation, like Charlotte's vines and Rosetta's thorns. Enoch, despite being a descendant of the royal family, has the power of lightning instead.
- Elemental Weapon: Hector's weapon is a set of ice bow and arrows.
- Emotional Powers: A magician's power can go out of control when they're agitated. Lapis in particular suffers greatly from this: her power as Deitasterra can easily get out of hand when she's emotionally unstable, be it deeply broken from trauma or boiling with anger.
- Ethereal White Dress: Deitasterra is always depicted with a long white dress, as well as her disciples.
- Even the Girls Want Her: Mapharam and Calla are admired by both men and women. They seem to have more female admirers than male, though.
- Everyone Is Bi: Queerness is as common as breathing in this world. Most of the main characters are bi, and background characters are also depicted in queer relationships.
- Evil All Along: At the end of season 1, Hugo is revealed to be the mastermind behind everything Lapis has gone through. He even goes as far as dooming an entire kingdom and countless citizens for the sake of his plan.
- Evil Uncle: King Georges is downright nasty to his nephew Enoch. He insults Enoch in a formal meeting and refers to him as a dog, and Enoch can do nothing except accepting it with a smile. Later, it turns out that he played a big role in Enoch's misery: he collaborated with Hugo to take over the throne by murdering Queen Sinclair, framing Dame Hecabe, and turning Theodore into a magician.
- Evil Redhead: Calla, the second Dark Lord, has long, vibrant red hair. She isn't evil, but definitely enigmatic and morally questionable on occasion.
- Exotic Eye Designs: Averna and her descendants have silver eyes with red pupils. These eyes are proof of the royal bloodline as mentioned by Princess Rosetta.
- Eyepatch of Power: Dame Jeremiah, the most respected holy knight, wears an eyepatch over her left eye.
- Eyes Always Shut: Karl is initially depicted with his eyes closed. He starts opening his eyes more as the story progresses.
- Eye Scream:
- Calla's right eye is hollow. One can only imagine what happened to her during the ten-year-long War of Subjugation.
- Rosetta threatens to pluck Charlotte's eyes out in their fight. She seems to genuinely mean it, too, if Charlotte doesn't surrender right then.
- The Faceless: In the first hundred chapters, only three of the four surviving disciples show their face. The first disciple's face was never depicted, even in the "Last Supper" Steal illustration that features every Dark Lord's disciples
. Her face is finally revealed in chapter 118. - Fantastic Racism: Magicians are widely discriminated against in Lampas, to the point that killing magicians is considered a great honor to knights.
- Fantasy Counterpart Culture:
- Hanla is just Korea with another name.
- Hardekhal seems to be based on Arabian culture.
- Fate Worse than Death:
- Transforming into a dark beast is a terrible ending for most magicians. They lose their ego and transform into a bloodthirsty monster, bringing destruction to those around them. The magicians in Zycarphus ruins specifically grow poisonous plants to commit suicide before they meet this fate.
- People infected with the Daphne plague suffer an unbearable pain. As soon as they let go of their will to live, their body transform into silver trees. It's revealed later that the Daphnes are still alive and somewhat conscious.
- Faux Affably Evil: Hugo's kindness is an act to throw off any suspicion about his betrayal. He reveals himself as a ruthless man blinded by his obsession with Zephyros after season 1 ended, though he used to be a genuinely good person.
- Fictional Constellations: The Dark Lord's Constellation, which is a constellation formed from pieces of the Dark Lord's broken heart.
- Fiery Redhead: Charlotte, a hot-blooded tsundere princess, has orange hair. Inverted with Scarlett, a nonchalant redhead.
- Fighting Your Friend: Lapis defied this in the Garden of Daphne Arc by stopping Dmitriy from fighting Hugo, in fear of breaking his heart. Hugo doesn't attack Dmitriy either, because Dmitriy still remembers Zephyros (despite also accusing Dmitriy of replacing her with Astrad).
- Fighting Your God: Averna confronted Deitasterra, who's essentially the continent's god, and severely wounded her. While the wound didn't kill Deitasterra, it shattered her heart and caused her to fall into coma for a long time.
- Fire, Ice, Lightning: The three elemental power users in Lapis' friend group form this trio. Mapharam is fire, Hector is ice and Enoch is lightning.
- Fire Stolen from the Gods: Dark power came from Deitasterra's blessings, and so was divine power. After betraying her master, Averna called her own dark power "divine", thereby stealing her master's power and claiming it as her own.
- First Law of Tragicomedies: The Dark Lord's Confession starts out as a mix of comedy and drama, mostly comedy. It becomes increasingly darker after the Mid-Season Twist is revealed. Halfway through season 2, the comedy has been reduced to occasional light-hearted moments and a few brief filler chapters between two heavy arcs. A new genre tag, "Dark Fantasy", is aptly added.
- Flaming Sword: Mapharam can set her sword on fire to slay dark beasts.
- Floral Theme Naming:
- Calla, named after calla lilies.
- Princess Rosetta and roses, obviously.
- Apparently, all the royal sisters except for Charlotte have floral names.
- Flower Motifs: Calla often appears with calla lilies in the background. Roses also make its appearance frequently, both as Love Flowers and as the Royal Family's motif.
- Flowers of Romance: Lapis gives Calla lilacs as a gift during their festival date.
- Foreshadowing:
- The Lovey-Dovey Summoning Sigil first appears as a gag. Later, after learning about its meaning from Professor Demian's class, the sigil becomes a hint towards Calla's feelings and Lapis' real identity.
- One of the questions asked by Professor Demian's magic book mentions a plague that originated from Hardekhal, Karl's country. The plague as well as Karl's backstory is finally introduced in the Third Star Arc.
- The rusty sword Dame Hecabe left behind turns out to be the key to unlock the record room in Zycarphus ruins. Moreover, it used to belong to Holy Saint Averna, the same sword that pierced through the Dark Lord's heart.
- The plague of Daphne turns people into trees. Plant manipulation is a power exclusive to the Royal Family. Enoch's older brother, Theodore, was a magician. The plague was caused by a decaying dark beast, and that dark beast was Theodore. Furthermore, the guardian tree in Area also have silver branches and bears glimmering leaves. That tree was Arvena, who turned herself into a Daphne one thousand years ago.
- Purple flowers are found on Season 2's illustration. This turns out to be the guardian tree's flowers, which start to bloom after Lapis accidentally brought Averna back to life.
- Freudian Excuse: Enoch was not always a ruthless holy knight. He was once a meek little boy who idolized his older brother Theodore. Then his mother died, presumably under his brother and a holy knight's hand, and his amazing brother turned out to be a magician. And then he found out his brother was the dark beast he just took down a moment ago. No wonder why he's like that.
- Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Pretty much nobody sees Hugo's actions as justified, not even his best friend who went through the same loss.
- Friend to Bugs: Binari loves playing with insects. It is a huge headache for Mapharam, who despises them. Her headache doubles when Lapis joined Binari in finding bugs.
- Funny Background Event: There's almost always some kind of funny things going on in the background. Some examples below.
- Myosotis often plays the comic relief in tense situations. Pay attention to the little bird in the background and you can find a handful of memes to use.
- Hector's shirt was chewed on by Lapis after she drank Karl's poisonous mushroom tea. Enoch later pulls on the tattered sleeve in curiosity.
- The Gadfly: Karl loves to get a rise out of other people. Charlotte is his favorite victim, as her reactions are amusingly dramatic.
- Gender-Blender Name: Dame Jeremiah's first name is a traditionally male name.
- Giant Woman: Deistaterra was half this and half Statuesque Stunner. Her exact height is unclear; sometimes she's twice as tall as the Disciples, sometimes she's three to four times taller. She may well have been capable of some level of shapeshifting.
- Gleeful and Grumpy Pairing: Dmitriy and Zephyros, and later Dmitriy and Astrad. Dmitriy is the grumpy one in both cases.
- God of Darkness: The Dark Lord. Deitasterra is the god of both darkness and light. Her body is dark as the night sky, and her power is called "dark power". However, she's a being made from a fallen star, and the power she bestowed upon people is described as "pieces of light".
- God of Light: Funnily enough, the Dark Lord herself is the embodiment of light. She was a shooting star before becoming a god, and the magic she bestowed upon her people is described as light of stars. However, it's implied that over time, Arverna has become a straighter example of this trope.
- A God I Am Not: Lapis is unhappy about herself being the reincarnation of Deitasterra, the Dark Lord she so deeply resented. While not actively denying her status as Deitasterra, her resentment has evolved into borderline self-loathing. She makes great efforts to be Lapis the human at first, but eventually she gave up and accepted that she will return to her Deitasterra self at the end, giving up on her life as a human.
- God in Human Form: Lapis is the human reincarnation of Dark Lord Deitasterra, a literal otherworldly being.
- God's Hands Are Tied: Despite being the mother of all power, Deitasterra is not omnipotent. Lapis always feels guilty over her incompetence and resents her godly self for causing so many misfortunes, even though most of them are not her fault.
- Gold and White Are Divine: The Dark Lord Deitasterra is always shown wearing a long white dress with golden accessories. Her disciples also wear similar clothes, albeit with a small amount of black in it. Her hair and blood color also share the color scheme. Averna later dressed in the same colors as the Holy Saint.
- The Good King: Queen Sinclair was a honest, upright ruler. Upon learning the truth about the Dark Lord and the Holy Saint, she decided to inform her people about it, even if it means sullying her own bloodline's reputation.
- Gotta Catch Them All: To restore the Dark Lord's power and remove the curse upon magicians, Lapis has to retrieve the seven pieces of the Dark Lord's heart.
- Great Offscreen War: The War of Subjugation happened a thousand years before the main story.
- Green Thumb: The royal family's hereditary special skill is manipulating trees. Hugo can also control trees if they are grown from his dust.
- Grief Makes You Crazy: The Deer-Antlered Dark Beast lost one of his best friends (who he may have had feelings for, it's unclear), and resolved to make those he held responsible suffer as much as possible. It turns out that he's Hugo, the friend he lost was Zephyros, and the person he blames is Lapis. While he initially has a Mask of Sanity, it slowly slips throughout Season 2 until his rationalizations reach the point of Insane Troll Logic.
- Hair-Contrast Duo: Zephyros and Dmitriy have contrasting power and opposite hair colors. He later becomes another duo with Astrad, who also shares Zephyros' blond hair.
- Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Astrad, a handsome blond man, is one of the kindest character in the story. He is Lapis' strongest ally as well as a familial figure to Hector, the boy he's been taking care of since Dame Hecabe's death. The same goes for Zephyros, though she's dead.
- Having a Blast: Evelyn is capable of generating explosions powerful enough to crack open the arena.
- Head Pet: One of Myosotis' favorite place to rest on along with the shoulder.
- Healing Hands: Binari's special skill allows her to patch one's body up from head to toe by touching them while holding her staff in the other hand.
- The Heart: Binari and Lapis are the ones who connect their group of friends.
- Heavenly Blue: Holy Saint Averna has partial blue hair. It was fully blue before she turned against Deitasterra.
- Heroic BSoD: Lapis often experiences this, especially when witnessing magicians' horrific fate. She almost shut down completely after her so-called victory against Princess Rosetta.
- Heroic Build: Many knights have well-built body as their job requires great strength, both mentally and physically. Mapharam, Calla, Dmitriy, and the holy knights all have defined muscles, even though their clothes don't usually reveal it.
- He Was Right There All Along: Saint Averna has been alive and in plain sight in Area Academy since its founding - as a magically-cursed immobile being: the silver tree in the courtyard.
- Hiding Behind Your Bangs: Calla's hollow right eye is always covered with her bangs.
- High Hopes, Zero Talent: Lapis wishes to become a holy knight and receive the Holy Saint's divine power. Not only is she a magician, she is so weak that even the most simple sigils are a challenge to cast for her.
- Historical Hero Upgrade: The proclaimed Holy Saint was the complete opposite of a saint. In fact, she was a traitor who turned against her master and fellow disciples. The War of Subjugation was her attempt to take over Deitasterra's position as a religious figure, not a war to end an evil Dark Lord's reign like history claimed it to be, and she is shown smiling sadistically as she tells Deitasterra what her despair has caused.
- Historical Relationship Overhaul: According to Lampas' founding legend, Holy Saint Averna was a righteous hero who defeated the evil Dark Lord. Her relationship with the Dark Lord in reality is much more complex than that: Averna was the last disciple of the first Dark Lord Deitasterra, and the second Dark Lord was another disciple before her, Calla. On top of this, she and Calla were implied to be dating.
- Historical Ugliness Update: The Dark Lord is rumored to be unsightly with horns on her head. Calla is a gorgeous red-haired woman with a face so handsome it made Lapis' heart skip a beat.Lapis: I've heard that the Dark Lord looks absolutely hideous.
Calla: Records and rumors don't always tell the truth.
Lapis: I've also heard about a pair of horns...
Calla: Never. - Historical Villain Upgrade: The Dark Lord was notorious for being an evil overlord. She is nowhere near as bad as history has made her out to be. The bad reputation was propagated by Averna, who was the real villain of the story.
- Homoerotic Subtext: Some of them are text, even.
- Mapharam, Binari and Lapis consider each other their family. How exactly does this dynamic work is up to your interpretation.
- Dmitriy and Astrad act almost exactly like an old married couple. Astrad cares about Dmitriy greatly, to the point that he's willing to betray the Holy Saint for his sake. And even though Astrad's antics bother him greatly, it's undeniable that Astrad is as important to Dmitriy as he is to the blond. Their relationship is also sometimes compared to that of Zephyros and Hugo.
- Evelyn's obsession with Mapharam can be read as a rather ill-adjusted crush. Evelyn has stated multiple times that she's been training to chase after Mapharam and to stand next to her as an equal.
- Calla and Lapis, no questions asked. The amount of romantic tension between them is off the charts. Calla was summoned with a sigil that only works if the summoned one loves the summoner, and Lapis has been pretty much confirmed to reciprocate the feelings as of the Third Star Arc.
- Calla and Averna's relationship is more ambiguous in nature but no less gay. Averna displays romantic interest in Calla, even calling Calla hers, and in flashbacks the two have been shown sharing some intimate moments together like dancing and playing harp.
- Horns of Villainy: The Dark Lord is rumored to have a pair of horns on her head. In truth, neither did Calla nor Deitasterra have horns. Hugo does, as the deer-horned follower.
- Hot-Blooded: While Mapharam is more rational than most examples, she's still more than willing to put herself in danger for a good fight (or to save her friends).
- Hot God: Deitasterra, hands down.
- Humanoid Abomination: Some dark beasts look like a horrid combination of monsters and humans. Some Daphnes retain their humanlike features, which results in a garden full of tree-shaped corpses.
- An Ice Person: Hector has the ability to conjure ice through his bow and arrows.
- Identity Amnesia: Lapis is Deitasterra's amnesiac reincarnation, and as she gathers more stars, she regains more memories and power of her god self.
- Identity Breakdown: As soon as Lapis learned of her true identity as the first Dark Lord, she started suffering from an unending mental breakdown. She's learned to make peace with herself somewhat after remembering Zephyros in the Garden of Daphne.
- I Did What I Had to Do: Some knights consider killing magicians something they must do, a lesser of two evils to stop a bigger threat from appearing. Enoch is particularly callous towards it, condemns people for going against the policy, and makes no attempt to give them a quick or painless end; in fact, it seems that this is normal for knights, and compassionate individuals like Hector, Hecabe, and Astrad are the exception. While Jeremiah seems to pity them, she actively encourages their dehumanization in order to make exterminating them more efficient.
- Impaled with Extreme Prejudice:
- Calla can conjure huge black spikes to impale her enemies. She has stabbed dark beasts twice with this spell.
- Many knights in the Garden of Daphne are wiped out by large spikes shooting out from a follower.
- Infodump: The webtoon tends to have long explanations about the worldbuilding.
- Instant Messenger Pigeon: Lapis uses Myosotis to send a letter to Mapharam and Binari in the festival after being separated from them.
- In the Hood:
- Some magicians wear a hooded cloak to hide their eyes. The unnamed magician at the beginning and Lapis both wear one, though that didn't stop people from finding out he's a magician in the former's case.
- The followers all wear a long cloak with hood as well as an ominous mask. As they are completely covered from head to toes, it's difficult to find out their real identity.
- Insane Troll Logic: Averna, Hugo and Enoch blame everything on the Dark Lord, or more precisely, Deitasterra. Their reasoning is confusing at best and downright absurd at worst.
- Averna considered Deitasterra unworthy of fulfilling humans' wishes. Her solution? Killing her master, massacring her master's devotees, forming what's essentially a cult and take over her master's position as the highly respected religious figure. It's unclear if she even believes her own nonsense or if she simply wanted power for herself.
- Enoch felt betrayed by his brother who was a magician and presumably killed their mother. Unable to cope with reality, he decided that everything that went wrong is the Dark Lord's fault and devoted himself to Holy Saint Averna. It turns out that he killed his brother, and thus caused the Plague of Daphne which his brother's blood spread; this combined with the revelation that Arverna can speak in her descendants' minds provides more of an explanation.
- Hugo loathes Deitasterra for not protecting Zephyros, so he plotted a huge betrayal and went to incredibly far lengths to take revenge. That includes merging dead magicians (his own friend's body, even) with the Follower, murdering the whole town Lapis stayed at, cursing the man who took care of her, bringing a whole nation to ruin and spreading a terrible plague across the continent, and aiding a royal coup. All while blaming Deitasterra for everything he's done. Lapis is understandably outraged after learning about the truth, and when he reveals that Arverna will resurrect Zephyros, she's still outraged because that would cause the end of the world. While Dmitri also resents Deitasterra for "ruining everything 1,000 years ago," he at least is willing to work with her on the off chance that she can fix it, and is willing to kill her when it seems that she will ruin things again.
- Instant Costume Change: Disciples are shown to be powerful enough they can generate clothes on the spot.
- Intoxication Ensues: Karl's bubbling green tea makes the whole friend group absolutely wasted. Case in point, Mapharam and Lapis both try to threaten Hector; Mapharam facing a different direction, and Lapis crushing a biscuit. Hector is utterly baffled by what this is supposed to mean. Later, Lapis is shown trying to eat Hector's clothes. Turns out it was brewed from a poisonous mushroom.
- It's Not You, It's My Enemies: Lapis tends to abandon her friends out of fear that her identity would bring more danger to them. Her friends don't think that's the case, though. They are more than willing to stay by her side, even if it means they have to face more danger than ever.
- I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Enoch and Hector both like Lapis romantically, but they both know they're not the best choice for Lapis.
- Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: Battle fits are generally quite sensible, but some characters wear clothes that aren't quite convenient in battles, like Calla and her long coat. The tournament arc has Lapis and Mapharam who fight in their rather elaborate gown. Princess Rosetta zig-zagged this, as while she changed out of her Pimped-Out Dress before battle, her new outfit is still filled with accessories.
- Knight in Sour Armor: Unlike Calla and Hugo, Dmitriy is rather sour towards Lapis/Deitasterra. He states that he's only putting up with Lapis right now for the other disciples' sake. Despite that, it's clear that he cares for his fellow disciples and students and would protect them at almost all cost.
- Knight Templar: Enoch, who's quite literally a knight.
- Kung-Fu Wizard: Being a knight requires great physical strength as well as magical power. If their health deteriorates, their body wouldn't be able to withstand the immense pressure from divine power.
- The Lad-ette: Mapharam is a handsome jock with defined muscles and casual, unladylike behaviors.
- Lady Looks Like a Dude: Mapharam and Calla are commonly mistaken as men. Their profile even marks their gender with a red circle for emphasis.
- Lady of War: Calla is always composed and elegant even during battle. Her good looks, great sense of fashion and impeccable combat skills makes her a professional heartthrob, both to other characters In-Universe and to the readers in Real Life.
- Laser-Guided Amnesia:
- Lapis doesn't remember anything about herself before being taken in by Binari and Mapharam. She only starts to rediscover her memories while retrieving the Dark Lord's stars.
- To stop his little brother from blaming himself, Theodore erased Enoch's memories about him being cursed.
- "Last Supper" Steal: In chapter 78
, Lapis/Deistaterra is surrounded by disciples on both side, eyes slightly glancing down and arms spreading. Arverna is in the same position as Judas, indicating her eventual betrayal. - Light 'em Up: Zephyros' special skill is light manipulation.
- Living Relic: The Disciples are the only surviving remnants of the Dark Lord's forgotten past, besides the old cities' ruins.
- Locked into Strangeness: Averna's blue hair half turned into silver after she wounded Deitasterra and took over her master's position.
- Long-Haired Pretty Boy:
- Astrad is a handsome holy knight with long blond hair.
- Dmitriy used to have long hair a thousand years ago, when Deitasterra was still around.
- The Lost Lenore: Zephyros is one to Hugo. It's been a thousand years since her death and he still hasn't really gotten over it.
- Lying Finger Cross: In one panel, Calla stands surrounded by the disciples with her fingers crossing. This, combined with the number of disciples being only eleven, hints towards the truth about the first Dark Lord and Averna's betrayal.
- Magical Star Symbols: Star symbolism is everywhere. The mark of magicians and holy knights, Calla's earring, Area Academy's badge, etc. Despite being the incarnation of a fallen star, Deitasterra doesn't have anything star-shaped on herself. Instead, she has sun-moon pupils and wears matching earrings.
- A Magic Contract Comes with a Kiss: The summoning ritual Lapis used to call upon Calla must be sealed with a kiss. Seeing Lapis' hesitation to get intimate, Calla saves the girl from awkwardness by kissing her palm instead.
- Magic Fire: The fire from Mapharam's sword is created by a sigil, and so are the fire horses in Zycarphus ruins.
- Magic Kiss: Calla suspends Lapis' dark power with a kiss when Lapis is overloaded with her dark power (though this may have been simply to distract Lapis from her despair, which was causing said overload). She collapses from exhaustion afterwards.
- Magic Knight: What the knights of Lampas are. Especially the holy knights.
- Magic Meteor: The meteor fallen upon the continent over millennium ago was a magical star and Deitasterra's heart.
- Magic Staff: Binari uses a staff instead of a weapon like other students and knights.
- Magnetic Plot Device: The Dark Lord's Constellation, or rather, the pieces of her heart. At least three different forces are fighting to get their hands on them.
- Make a Wish: Deitasterra's source of power. She's born from humans' prayers, and in turn, she fulfill their wishes with her magic.
- As Arverna drank Deitasterra's blood and took over her place as a worship figure, she also received power from people's prayers. The amount of power she's amassed after a thousand years have made her akin to a god, and at the very least more powerful than Lapis with only 3 pieces of her heart.
- Malevolent Masked Men: All Followers hide their face under a mask and a long hooded cloak.
- Mark of the Supernatural: Both magicians and holy knights have special markings on them. A magician's mark can show up everywhere on their body, while a holy knight's mark is always on their neck.
- Meaningful Name:
- Lapis means "rock" in Latin, indicating her nature as a part of Deitasterra.
- Deitasterra is a combination of two Latin words: "deitas" meaning "divine, holy", and "terra" meaning "earth, land". She is a meteorite fallen from the sky and gained her godhood from humans' prayers.
- The continent is named Gaia after the primordial goddess Gaia.
- Binari's name means "blessing/prayer song", which is an important part of her character arc.
- Zephyros' name means "west wind", and she's often compared to Astrad, who control winds.
- The author has posted a list of character names, their importance and meaning on her account. Besides the ones mentioned above, there's also Calla (calla lilies), Mapharam (Southern wind), Astrad (star), Demian (demon), Dmitriy (Demeter's worshipper), Charlotte and Karl (both means "freedom").
- The story features many names from Greek mythology in general, such as Gaia above, Daphne, Circe, Cassandra, Hector and Hecabe.
- Arverna likely originates from Avernus, the entrance to the underworld in Roman mythology.
- Enoch shares the name with Noah's great-grandfather, who ascended and became Metatron. His surname after becoming a holy knight, Aither, means "sky, heavens" in Greek.
- Memorial Statue: There is a statue of Holy Saint Averna in Area Academy. It's a sacred site to both the academy and the kingdom as a whole, so when blood was found on the statue, people were horrified.
- Mercy Kill: Knights consider killing magicians to be a better end for their miserable fate. Some people, like Astrad, Hecabe and Lapis, don't think the same and would avoid killing them until it's absolutely unavoidable.
- Merlin and Nimue: Deitasterra and Calla's dynamic can be seen as this. Calla loves her master, and while it's unclear if what Deitasterra felt was romantic love, it's obvious Calla was her favorite disciple.
- Mid-Season Twist: Halfway through season 1, Lapis is revealed to be the reincarnation of Deitasterra, the first Dark Lord and Calla's master.
- Misplaced Retribution: Pretty much anything that went wrong can be blamed on the Dark Lord somehow, even if it's not related to her at all.
- Enoch faithfully believes that everything magician and dark beast-related was the Dark Lord's fault, and if he can exterminate all of them as well as the Dark Lord, all misfortunes will end. This blind faith is less the result of brainwashing result and more of a poor attempt at coping with his trauma.
- Zephyros' death was caused by the Dark Lord's enemies and had nothing to do with Deitasterra herself. Still, Hugo blames her because Zephyros might've lived as a normal human if only Deitasterra didn't exist. Hell, he even blamed her for things that he caused, such as the Han family's destruction, Hardekhal's fall, and Martin's death.
- The Mole: Hugo is the leader of the followers and one of the Dark Lord's people in Area Academy. As he's a trusted friend to all of them, no one suspected him.
- Dame Cochma later is revealed to be Hugo's spy on the holy knight's side. She's pretty much coerced into doing it for her daughter's life, though.
- Money Fetish: Demian's love for money is a recurring Running Gag. At one point he even steal coins from a fountain right in front of the people who just tossed them.
- Monkey Morality Pose: The statues blocking the doors in the Zycarphus tower cover their mouth, ears and eyes, respectively. There's also a fourth statue planting head down, possibly indicating the fourth monkey, "do no evil".
- Mood Whiplash: This webtoon is capable of flipping the mood from breath-holding drama to comedy in the span of a few chapters. Not even the darkest arcs are exempt from this.
- The Mourning After: Hugo has been stuck in grief over Zephyros for one thousand years ever since her death. Even Dmitriy, the third member of their friend group, has gotten pretty much over it since a long time ago.
- Mystical Plague: Daphne, a plague that turns people into trees.
- Mystical White Hair: Deitasterra's long, flowy silver hair says it all about her godly status. After usurping her master, Arverna's hair also turned half silver.
- Mythopoeia: The myth of Dark Lord and Holy Saint.
- Myth Prologue: The first chapter introduces the founding legend of Lampas as well as the story of the Dark Lord and Holy Saint Averna.
- Nearly Normal Animal: Myosotis looks like a cute little bluebird but is capable of emoting like a human being.
- Neck Lift: Hugo does this to Binari in the Garden of Daphne. Luckily, Lapis came just in time to rescue Binari before she's seriously harmed.
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero!: Lapis and Calla attempt to destroy Arverna before she could come back using Lapis' blood. However, Averna has grown much more powerful than they expected, and the blood instead gave her the power she needed to return to life.
- Non-Human Sidekick: Myosotis, the little bluebird Lapis saved.
- Non-Uniform Uniform: Area Academy's uniform varies so greatly in style that it can barely be called a uniform at all. The only thing they have in common is the color scheme, the shoulder cape and the badge.
- Not Quite Dead: Arverna has been thought to be dead for a millennium after founding Lampas. In truth, she transformed herself into a silver tree akin to Daphne, becoming the guardian tree in the middle of Area Academy.
- Oblivious Guilt Slinging: Enoch's innocent adoration for Lapis makes her feel troubled for lying to him about her identity.
- Oblivious to Love: Lapis is oblivious to Hector's crush while pretty much everyone who's seen them together know about it. Enoch's feelings, while less obvious, are equally unnoticed.
- Ocular Gushers: For the reincarnation of the powerful Dark Lord, Lapis surely is a sensitive girl. There is rarely any arcs that doesn't have at least one moment of sobbing Lapis.
- Odd Couple: Dmitriy and Astrad. In their character profile, their likes and dislikes are the exact opposite of each other, and yet they're practically joined at the hip.
- Ojou Ringlets: Princess Rosetta has massive hair drills to fit her Alpha Bitch personality.
- Once More, with Clarity: Lapis only manages to light a tiny flicker of flame in her entrance exam, but a flashback by Calla later shows that she actually lights all the candles in the nearby temple. The strange power Enoch senses come from Calla extinguishing the candles.
- One Head Taller: Most characters tower over Lapis, from men to women. The only notable exceptions are Binari and Cora Connie.
- One-Man Army: The Dark Lord's surviving disciples are powerful enough to defeat an entire battalion of knights all by themselves. It's implied they can fight on par with a holy knight, or even overpower one, as seen in their disdain towards Arverna's successors and the way Hugo toyed with Enoch. In fact, this is likely, as Jeremiah being stronger than Dmitriy is described by Calla as being an outlier due to Jeremiah's incredible power.
- The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Hugo did everything he could to protect Lapis from being found out by the holy knights, because he wanted to be the one to bring her to her demise.
- Outcast Refuge: Zycarphus ruins was introduced as the refuge for a large group of magicians and their relatives. These people were brought there by Dame Hecabe, who was against the Knight's Creed to slaughter magicians indiscriminately.
- The Paladin: The holy knights, who are a group of knights appointed as Saint Averna's successors to protect their land.
- Parrot Pet Position: Myosotis often sits on people's shoulder if it's not landing on their head.
- Pet Baby Wild Animal: Myosotis, of course.
- Perpetual Frowner: Dmitriy, Charlotte and Evelyn are almost always seen with a deep scowl.
- Perpetual Smiler: Zephyros and Astrad are the smiley sunshines of the story. Calla is also seen frequently with a smile, though hers usually seems more detached than the other two.
- Phlebotinum Overdose: What happens if you get too close to a Dark Lord's star without the proper requirements needed to handle it. At least one follower has died from trying to consume its immense dark power.
- Pink Means Feminine: Binari, the girliest one in the Hanla trio, is often clad in pink from head to toe.
- Playful Cat Smile: Karl is often seen with one when he's not acting serious.
- Playing with Fire: Mapharam's special ability allows her to control fire.
- Plucky Girl: Lapis, hands down. No matter what happens, she will still stand up and fight for the people she loves.
- Power Degeneration: If a knight's body fails to withstand divine power, their health will continue to deteriorate from the excessive strain of the power until they eventually die. Astrad's heart complications is an example.
- Power Dyes Your Hair: Lapis' strawberry blond hair turns into silver when Deitasterra's memories and power take over.
- Power Makes Your Hair Grow: Lapis' hair grows long like a river after obtaining the second star. Binari trims it to the initial length afterwards.
- The Power of Friendship: Lapis' friends, especially Mapharam and Binari, are her motivation when faced with challenges.
- Pretty Princess Powerhouse: Charlotte and Rosetta are both princesses with excellent battle skills.
- Proud Beauty: Astrad, Mapharam and Calla are highly attractive, and they will not let you forget it for even a second (though in Astrad's case it's hard to tell if he's being serious or not).
- Astrad's very first appearance has him shamelessly praising his face.Astrad: Are you okay? Look at my face and soothe your nerves. Though my beauty may agitate you further!
- Mapharam loves being the subject of admiration. She counters two badmouthing guys by flexing her arms, and even tells Hector to get out of the way so she can continue "showing off her assets".Mapharam: Oh dear, there's just not enough of me to go around...
- In the town festival, Calla apologizes to Lapis for attracting unwanted suitors by... complementing her own looks.Calla: I'm sorry about that.
Lapis: There's nothing to be sorry about... It's not your fault you're gorgeous and popular...
Calla: Exactly. I'm sorry for being so gorgeous and popular.
Lapis: You know what? Maybe you should be sorry.
- Astrad's very first appearance has him shamelessly praising his face.
- A Pupil of Mine Until He Turned to Evil: Holy Saint Arverna was a disciple of Dark Lord Deitasterra before she betrayed her master.
- Pyrrhic Victory:
- Even though Lapis is the champion of the tournament, she gained nothing from it at all. Instead, she came out horribly traumatized by the dead magicians.
- The defeat of Hardekhal's dark beast was expected to bring an end to their suffering. But a plague started to spread from the decayed land around the beast's corpse, and the situation quickly got out of control. Hardekhal is on the brink of ruins, Karl lost almost everything he's ever fought for, and Enoch, the knight who has slain the beast, was forever scarred with the knowledge of killing his once beloved brother with his own hands.
- Queer Colors: Lapis' eyes are pink, purple and blue, the colors of the bi flag.
- Rain of Arrows: Dame Cochma's special skill allows her to control a huge amount of arrows. She can fill a whole arena with her arrows and manipulate their trajectory as she wishes. Her power is so strong she's capable of defending Lampas even when two divisions have left to destroy the Dark Lord's star.
- "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Lapis occasionally delivers one.
- During Lapis' match against Princess Rosetta, she points out the latter's mistake in the fight and comments on her weak tactical sense.Lapis: You had plenty of ways to defend yourself, but you fail to be as resourceful as you are powerful, Your Highness.
- Lapis gives a nice punch to Hugo's face in the middle of his speech to shut him up before countering with her own criticisms.Lapis: This isn't all my fault, you dramatic prick! As if what happened a thousand years ago wasn't bad enough! Now you're trying to blame me for your little sick scheme?
- During Lapis' match against Princess Rosetta, she points out the latter's mistake in the fight and comments on her weak tactical sense.
- Rebellious Princess: Charlotte is the fourth princess of Lampas and a hot-blooded apprentice knight.
- Red and Black and Evil All Over: Calla, the Dark Lord, has red hair and wears black clothes. She's not evil as people claimed her to be, however. The followers' leader also has a red-and-black color scheme.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: While they're not exactly red, Arverna and her descendants' eyes are usually remarked as threatening to Lapis.
- Redhead in Green: Two redheads wear green in the tournament arc: Calla and Scarlett, Dame Cochma's daughter.
- Red Right Hand: Magicians can be easily singled out of a crowd based on their magician mark and dark sclera.
- Reincarnation: Lapis is the first Dark Lord Deitasterra reincarnated as a human.
- Reincarnation Romance: Lapis loves Calla, who's in love with her master Deitasterra, Lapis' previous life.
- Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: The webtoon is filled with this.
- The continent's name is Gaia.
- The first disciple's alias is Circe, who is a famous witch in Classical Mythology.
- Chapter 119 reveals her real name, Cassandra, which is the name of a princess whose prophecies were never believed.
- Daphne turned into a tree to avoid Apollo's advances. Similarly, the plague Daphne turns people into silver trees.
- Hector and Dame Hecabe's names are a reference to Prince Hector and Queen Hecuba of Troy.
- Religion Is Magic: Divine power comes from the Holy Saint, Lampas' religious figure, while dark power originates from the Dark Lord, enemy of the continent. Magic can be casted by using both divine power and dark power. The Dark Lord was a worshipped being with the power akin to god and the mother of all dark power, so magic in nature is a part of her worship.
- Resigned to the Call: Although Lapis resents herself for being the Dark Lord, she has accepted reversing the curse as her top priority.
- The Reveal:
- Chapter 31: Lapis being Deitasterra, the true Dark Lord.
- Chapter 60: The truth about Averna, the Dark Lord and what happened a thousand years ago.
- Chapter 65: Hugo's betrayal and the return of Arverna.
- Chapter 114: Averna is still alive as the guardian tree at Area.
- Ridiculously Cute Critter: Who else but Myosotis, the adorable bluebird of Lapis?
- Rose-Haired Sweetie: Binari has strawberry pink hair matching her sweet personality.
- Royal Blood: Princess Charlotte, Princess Rosetta, the late Prince Theodore and Enoch are all descendants of Saint Averna and a member of the Royal Family (though Enoch has relinquished his identity as royalty to become a holy knight).
- Rugged Scar: Dame Jeremiah has a huge scar running across her face. She's the oldest, most respected and most experienced holy knight.
- Running Gag:
- Demian's absurd love for money.
- Hector trying to shut everyone up before they spill his "secret" crush on Lapis.
- Karl being a sleepyhead Cloudcuckoolander.
- Mapharam being a brute.
- Enoch's over-the-top purity (when he's not slaughtering others, that is).
- Sad Clown: Karl initially plays the wacky comedic relief, but as the story goes on it becomes increasingly clearer that he's as troubled as the other members of the main cast, if not more.
- Scenery Porn: One of the specialty of The Dark Lord's Confession is the incredible landscape arts. From Herimka to Zycarphus to the Garden of Hardekhal, the scenery never disappoints.
- Screwball Serum: Karl once gives Mapharam, Binari and Lapis a sickly green bubbling tea that makes the whole group decide to go find a book in the forbidden library and use vague and confusing threats on Hector when he tries to stop them. Turns out he brewed it from a weird mushroom he found in the cupboard.
- Sealed Evil in a Can: After being defeated in the Subjugation War, the Dark Lord was imprisoned in the Shadow Crematorium for a thousand years. It's not until Lapis accidentally activated the Lovey-Dovey Summoning Sigil that the Dark Lord was released.
- Significant Name Shift: Calla never calls Lapis by her name at first, only seeing her as a part of Deitasterra. She finally says Lapis' name in chapter 52 and acknowledges Lapis as her own person.
- Significant White Hair, Dark Skin: Dame Jeremiah and Deitasterra both have dark skin (quite literally in the latter's case) and white/silver hair. Karl's hair is closer to light brown than white, but it occasionally looks like tan silver depending on the lighting.
- Silver Fox: Age doesn't seem to affect one's hotness here, as we can see from Dame Jeremiah and Hugo.
- Sinister Deer Skull: The dark beast that ravaged the Han family has deer-like head. The leader of the followers also wears a deer skull as mask.
- Sinister Scythe: Calla's weapon is a huge black scythe.
- Sixth Ranger Traitor: Arverna was the thirteenth and last disciple, and also the traitor who caused the demise of her own friends.
- Out of the three disciples in Area Academy, Hugo is the last one introduced to the readers. He's the deer-horned follower and the one who's planned most of the misfortunes that has befallen upon the main cast.
- Shattering the Illusion: The fog in the Garden of Daphne makes people hallucinate. Hector shatters the illusions with his ice arrow, and wakes Lapis up by headbutting her. Mapharam, immediately upon seeing her dead parents, punches herself in the face to escape from it.
- Shock and Awe: Enoch's special skill is to control lightning.
- Shoot the Dog: Hector lost his trust in Enoch after witnessing the latter killing a magician child in cold blood, even though the child was looking at him with utmost glee in his eyes.
- Sleepyhead: Karl's ability to sleep no matter the situation is a Running Gag in the first half of the story. The reason behind this is nowhere near as comedic as it seems: Karl is so deep in depression he has no desire to stay awake. Later, it's revealed that he either sleeps all day long or can't sleep at all when he thinks about his country's woes.
- Sliding Scale of Idealism Versus Cynicism: Lapis, Binari, Mapharam, the Liberes and Astrad fall firmly on the Idealism side. On the Cynicism side, we have Enoch, Evelyn, Karl, Dmitriy and Hugo. Calla is initially more on the cynical side, but her time with Lapis has caused her to lean more towards Idealism. Dame Cochma and Dame Jeremiah are in the neutral ground with slight Cynicism tendency.
- Sliding Scale of Unavoidable vs. Unforgivable: The students, knights and holy knights in Lampas all hold different views in regards to the extermination of magicians. Some of them consider it an appalling act and only use violence as a last resort. Others see nothing wrong with slaughtering magicians, as their job is to protect civilians and not magicians, who are a threat to society. A few of them are aware of the cruelty of this act but choose to do it anyways because there's nothing else they can do. Jeremiah, for example, sees them as victims but also actively works to dehumanize them in the eyes of the people.
- Snow Means Death: The Libere family was exterminated on a snowy day. When the little Hector got out of his room, the large windows showed a layer of thick snow splattered all over with blood.
- Something about a Rose: Roses seem to be the symbol of royalty. Averna is almost always accompanied by white roses in her illustrations. Other members of the royal bloodline are sometimes surrounded by them too.
- Princess Rosetta, true to her name, is adorned with roses even during the tournament. Her special skill is manipulating thorned plants similar to a rose's thorns.
- Sparing Them the Dirty Work:
- To lessen Lapis' burden of guilt, Calla comforts her by taking on her sins as the Dark Lord for her. She tells Lapis that she should focus on retrieving the stars and do what she wants, and let all the dirty works behind for Calla to handle.
- Enoch smites all the magicians brought to Lapis so she can avoid killing them after seeing how devastated she is.
- Lapis fights against Hugo despite being weaker than him because she doesn't wish for Dmitriy to fight against his dear friend of over one thousand years.
- Star Power: The dark power Deitasterra granted humans originates from her, the embodiment of a meteorite. The mark of the blessing on their body is in shape of a star, too.The mark of the Blessing manifests itself on the subjects' bodies and was also reflected in the night sky like a shining star.
- The Stars Are Going Out: The Dark Lord's Constellation is made of seven shards of her heart. Each of the fallen stars contain paralyzing dark power inside, and when all of them fall from the sky, the Dark Lord shall return with her full power.
- Statuesque Stunner: Calla, with her 1,98 m height (6'6"), is taller than any other characters in the manhwa, minus Deitasterra.
- Deitasterra is half this and half Giant Woman. She's at least twice as tall as an average human, and sometimes she seems to be several times taller than them. Even Calla is barely waist height when standing beside her.
- Stealing the Credit: A benign version. Astrad claims to be the one who destroyed the first two shards of the Dark Lord's heart to protect Lapis, Calla and the Disciples.
- Stellification: The Dark Lord's heart was shattered into seven pieces and turned into the Dark Lord's Constellation.
- Stepford Smiler: Enoch and Karl have a bad case of this, especially Enoch, who has been teetering over the edge for four years.
- Stone Wall: Dame Jeremiah tears the arena's floor apart with a huge crystal wall to protect Astrad from being impaled by Cochma's rain of arrows.
- Strong Family Resemblance: Most characters take after their mother. For example, Binari's hair is inherited from her mother, Hector and his siblings all have Dame Hecabe's periwinkle hair and pink eyes, and both sons of Queen Sinclair look exactly like their mother. Scarlett Vanal looks more like her red-haired father than her mother, but her green eyes are the same as Dame Cochma.
- Summoning Ritual: Lapis accidentally summons Calla with a Lovey-Dovey Summoning Sigil, which was formed from the broken sigil she carved just a moment before.
- Supernatural Sensitivity: Magicians, holy knights and those with the royal bloodline can sense the Dark Lord's dark power.
- Survivor Guilt: Lapis carries immense guilt over being the only one who survived even though she was the cause of all these tragedies her friends have encountered. Not to mention the creation of the curse that destroyed so many people's lives in over a thousand years.
- Sweet Tooth: Lapis seems to love sweets. There's almost always some kind of cake reserved for her in her meetings with Calla. In the festival, she's seen eating a strawberry crepe bought by Calla.
- Tailor-Made Prison: The Shadow Crematorium is used to seal exclusively the Dark Lord and no one else.
- Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Enoch and Dmitriy, with the latter being dark-skinned too. They're not highly sought out In-Universe though, probably because of Enoch's notoriety and Dmitriy's disinterest in anything other than money, Dark Lord-related matters, his friend(s) and Astrad.
- Tank-Top Tomboy: Mapharam wears a tank top underneath her uniform robes in the first two combat arcs. Her go-to casual clothes seems to be tank top too, as seen in the Comprehensive Evaluation Exam Arc.
- Tarot Motifs: Tarot imagery makes its appearance once in a while.
- In chapter 31, the four disciples are depicted wearing hooded cloaks and holding a lamp in their hands, symbolizing the Hermit. This illustration appears again as a Tarot card in chapter 118, which is named "The First Hermit" and features Circe, the first disciple.
- In the same chapter, the Dark Lord's people are shown as being hung upsidedown, resembling the Hanged Man.
- The weeping statue in Zycarphus is impaled by nine swords plus the key sword stabbing through its heart like Ten of Swords. Another illustration of the Dark Lord wearing a horned mask also references this card.
- Chapter 118 and 119 are named after two Tarot cards, the Hermit and the Empress.
- Tarot Troubles: While going on a shopping trip, Lapis and Astrad encounter a mysterious fortune teller who offers to give them a reading. Astrad's cards include Four of Swords and the Hanged Man, indicating his poor health and a future sacrifice he'll make. Lapis' reading is even worse, consisting of Ten of Swords, the Devil and the Tower. According to the fortune teller (who's actually Circe), it means Lapis is going to be abandoned by her closed ones in the near future. She even apologizes for not being able to interpret it differently. The following chapters were also named "Umbrous Omen".
- Targeted to Hurt the Hero: People around Lapis are frequently targeted, such as Martin, Mapharam and especially Binari.
- Teacher/Student Romance: Calla and Lapis/Deitasterra. While Lapis knows Calla before she joined Area as a professor, their relationship as Deitasterra the master and Calla the disciple certainly makes them qualify for this trope.
- Tears of Blood: Lapis frequently sheds blood tears when her power gets overwhelming. Some panels also depicts Deitasterra with golden blood streaming from her eyes.
- The Tease: Calla is keenly aware of her charming appearance and loves to see Lapis being all flustered around her.
- Technicolor Eyes: Pink, yellow, purple, red, silver, and that's not even all. Lapis' eye color is even more exotic with her magenta-purple-blue gradient.
- Teen Genius: Despite being centuries younger than other disciples and joined them as a teenager, Calla is more capable than any of them. She's able to converse with Deitasterra, a godly being, and designed around 80% of divine magic and the number of sigils existed a thousand years ago, a feat that even Hugo has to marvel at.
- Theseus' Ship Paradox: Lapis stumbles a book about the ship of Theseus in the bookstore and starts questioning her own existence, as she's not just Lapis but also the currently amnesiac and weakened Deitasterra.
- Those Two Guys: Dmitriy and Astrad. They often appear together and bring a chaotic energy everywhere with them.
- Thousand-Year Reign: The Dark Lord is said to will return after a thousand years. It seems to be the case with how Calla was released a millennium after the Subjugation War, but there's still no detailed timeline of events to determine whether it is precisely a thousand years or not. Not to mention the fact that Lapis is the real Dark Lord Deitasterra, and she's been around as a human for 9 years before Calla was released from the Shadow Crematorium and the first star fell. So whether this prophecy was referring to Calla or Lapis is still unclear.
- Took a Level in Badass: Lapis couldn't even cast a sigil at will at first, but during the tournament her regeneration magic has matured enough to be wielded on command. In the Third Star Arc, she's attuned enough to her senses to differ divine power and dark power. Physical strength-wise, the girl who struggled to hold her stance against a normal dark beast is now strong enough to cut a huge dark beast with human consciousness in half.
- Tomboy: Mapharam is such a butch tomboy that the author has to emphasize on her gender in her character sheet.
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Hanla duo, Mapharam and Binari. Mapharam is a tall, handsome tomboy and Binari is a tiny girl who always adorns herself with cute pink clothes.
- Tragic Dream: Lapis wants to live a normal life with her friends and loved ones, but as she's a magician (not just any magician, the First Magician herself), this becomes more or less a hopeless fantasy to her.
- Tragic Keepsake: Binari's trinket is the only thing she has left of her family after her mother passed away. Mapharam pretended to burn it to stop Binari from following her, which made Binari so upset she ran into the forest. Mapharam chased after her and returned the trinket after learning the truth behind it, and the two became friends.
- Tragic Ice Character: Hector's siblings all died fighting to ensure their little brother's safety. This memory has such a big impact on Hector that he awakened ice power because of it.
- Training the Gift of Magic: While magic is an innate ability, one still have to train it day and night to unlock the power's full potential. The holy knights aren't just powerful because of their magical talent, but also because of the sheer amount of experience they've accumulated in the training process.
- Transflormation: People who died from Daphne turn into silver trees, just like its namesake.
- Transhuman Abomination: The dark beasts were once cursed humans called magicians. Dark beasts' monstrosity even terrifies magicians and their family, so much that some are willing to take their own life before transforming into one.
- Trauma Conga Line: Life doesn't seem to get any easier to Lapis. First she was almost executed for being a magician, then her family was destroyed by a dark beast. She wandered around for four years hoping to become a student of Area to end her tragedy. Once she finally manages to get in (with the help of a certain Dark Lord she summoned), she only starts to be involved in more and more misfortunes, such as having to kill Martin and witnessing the cruel murder of magicians right in front of her.
- Enoch's life also seems to get worse and worse the longer he lives. His reliable older brother turned out to be a magician and seemingly conspired with a holy knight (who's also like a family to him) to assassinate his mother. He got titled a holy knight after slaying a powerful dark beast... which was his transformed brother, still semi-conscious. His mental health has been on the brink since then, and he pretty much collapsed mentally in the Third Star Arc after confronting his trauma. Although seeing the Plague of Daphne being undone seemed to help, Lapis faked her death soon after, and we haven't seen him since.
- Troubled Backstory Flashback: Every once in a while someone will recount their tragic past with a flashback. Notable characters include Lapis, Enoch, Hector, Binari and Karl.
- The Troublemaker: Karl (before season 2, anyways) and Astrad somehow always find a way to mess with other people. Astrad in particular is so ridiculously bothersome that not even his old mentor and Dmitriy can get used to his hijinks.
- Tsurime Eyes: Rosetta and Arverna both have this, to the point where narcissism and cruelty practically ooze off of them.
- Undying Loyalty: Calla is wholeheartedly devoted to her master that she's willing to do anything as long as the other wishes for it.
- Unlimited Wardrobe: Being in a military academy doesn't seem to limit people's wardrobe with how often they change clothes. Hell, you can even argue that it increases the amount of clothes they have, as the uniforms alone have several variations customized for every single knight.
- Villainous Princess: Princess Rosetta. She's a nasty older sister to Charlotte (to the point where it qualifies as abuse), bears close similarities to her ancestor Arverna, and is cruel enough to bring over a dozen of mutilated magicians to kill as a gift for the winner of the tournament. She also aids her father in killing her siblings (minus Charlotte) before offing the man himself.
- Viral Transformation: A part of what makes magicians so frightening in the people's eyes is that they can spread the curse to another person, though only once.
- Voluntary Shapeshifting: Followers can assume the form of dark beasts while retaining their ego thanks to an advanced sigil.
- Walking Wasteland: The dark beast in Hardekhal rotted the land around it after it was killed. From there, a plague was spread and turned everyone into silver trees.
- Was Once a Man: Dark beasts are magicians after they've transformed into mindless monsters. Similarly, Daphnes originated from people inflicted by the Daphne plague. After losing their will to live, they are transformed into silver trees.
- We Are Everywhere: For some reason, three of the four surviving disciples are all staff in Area Academy, the literal school of holy knights. Calla explains that it's because all disciples have extraordinary talents compared to the average human. Sir Astrad, one of the holy knights, is also an ally to them.
- The Followers are equally well-spread, if not more. Their leader is a Disciple and a member of the academy, and one of their spies is a literal holy knight. Really makes you wonder how exactly did the academy manage to stand strong for so long when so many of its staff (and students) are the knights' enemies.
- "Well Done, Son" Guy: Charlotte craves her father's approval so much that she joined Area Academy to prove her worth. Sadly, he never cares about her like he does her sister Rosetta, or her other sisters for that matter.
- Well-Intentioned Extremist: To Dame Jeremiah, dehumanizing magicians is a necessity to insure Lampas' citizens' safety. Their goal is understandable, their method? Not so much.
- Wham Episode: Chapter 31, 60 and 65 all mark important twists in the story.
- Chapter 31: The existence of Deitasterra, the actual Dark Lord, is revealed.
- Chapter 60: The truth behind what happened a thousand years ago as well as Averna's betrayal is told.
- Chapter 65 drops two bombs at the same time: Hugo being the deer-horned follower and Averna's return.
- White Hair, Black Heart: Arverna's hair is half silver. Her betrayal brought an end to Deitasterra's golden era and brought destruction upon the land.
- The Wise Prince: Theodore, Enoch's brother, was a caring prince. Karl used to be a promising heir too before Hardekhal was ravaged by the dark beast that spread the Daphne Plague.
- Wishing Well: Mariposa town has a big fountain where people toss coins in in exchange for a wish. Demian, the money-lover that he is, takes advantage of this and collect all the money inside—right in front of them, no less.
- Wish Upon a Shooting Star: Deitasterra's origin. It was thanks to the countless prayers humans made upon the fallen meteorite that Deitasterra gained her godhood.
- Wizards Live Longer: Disciples, the first ever magic users are nearly immortal as far as we know, as the surviving ones are still alive and kicking ten centuries after their Master's defeat. Not to mention they have been around centuries before the War of Subjugation happened.
- World of Action Girls: Lapis, Mapharam, Evelyn, Charlotte, Calla, etc. The list could go on.
- World of Technicolor Hair: Green, pink, purple, blue, red, orange, etc. Whatever color you're thinking of, good chance there's someone with that hair color in this story.
- Would Hurt a Child: Enoch is willing to kill literal children if they turn out to be magicians. Hugo is a much worse bastard regarding tormenting children, though he hasn't personally killed any yet.
- Wreathed in Flames: The fire sigils of Zycarphus take the form of flaming horses.
- You Are Better Than You Think You Are: A lesson Lapis has to learn throughout the story. Thankfully, her friends are always eager to remind her of her worth.
- You Must Be Cold: At one point during their dance in Mariposa's festival, Calla takes her coat off and gives it to Lapis to shield her from the cold night air.
