Smosh Pit
is an offshoot of Smosh. It's like their second channel, but... different? An outgrowth of the Smosh Squad, Ian, along with Shayne Topp, Damien Haas, Olivia Sui, Courtney Miller, Noah Grossman, Keith Leak Jr., Amanda Lehan-Canto, Tommy Bowe, Angela Giarratana, Arasha Lalani, Chanse McCrary, Trevor Evarts, and Spencer Agnew act out themed theatre, try to make each other laugh, eat strange items, and everything else.
Current shows include:
- Beopardy!: A quiz show definitely not based on Jeopardy!
- The Challenge Pit: The cast attempt various viral challenges.
- Culinary Crimes: Courtney and two guests are served a meal that's had several ingredients replaced with something else based on comments left on the recipe online, and must guess what was exchanged for what.
- Reading Reddit Stories: Shayne and two guests read and react to Reddit stories.
- Smosh Pit Theatre: The crew act out scenes based on a common theme.
- Try Not To Laugh: Where the team tries to make each other laugh.
- 2 Truths 1 Lie: Two players take turns telling each other two truthful statements about their life and one lie, and the other must guess which is the lie. If they guess wrong they get sprayed with water, but if they guess right, they spray the other player with water.
- Who Memed It: Plays have to guess who created a meme about the channel or the goings-on behind the camera.
- You Posted That: Game show were Ian digs up old social media posts of guests and they have to guess various things based on it.
- Smosh Family Feud: Game show of two teams of four, based on Family Feud
Former shows include:
- Eat It Or Yeet It!: Something gets served, and everyone has to decide whether they'll eat it or pass, and if they do eat it, try not to barf. Who will get The Big Bite?
- Lunchtime with Smosh: A vlog-style series predating the Smosh Squad. Ian and Anthony would grab lunch (or occasionally breakfast) from a location of their choosing, engage in idle chatter and impromptu gags, answer questions asked by fans on Twitter, and give their food an informal rating using esoteric units of measurement.
- Smosh is Bored: Another pre-Squad series, originally titled Ian is Bored. Ian (and Anthony, as the series progressed) would perform an activity that was suggested to them or deemed interesting. It had two subseries - Mailtime with Smosh and Backwards Words.
- Spelling Bee-kini Wax: Players must spell words, but if you spell the word wrong, you don't lose the competition, you lose hair down there!
- Stan vs The Internet: Fans of a particular show or sport compete against the Internet (in the form of someone Googling stuff on a laptop)
Smosh Pit includes examples of:
- Alternate Self: In Try Not To Laugh #129, one of the prompts is to do an impression of alternate-version of themselves. In their "alternate dimensions," Angela is still doing auditions, Damien is on German Disney Channel, Amanda is "wild" and snowboards, Courtney is still Mormon and homophobic, and Arasha is a sleep-paralysis demon... from Hawaii.
- The Artifact: The Big Bite in episodes with the wheel instead of a bell, where no one is safe and no one is out (normally, anyone who rings the bell before is out for the rest of the round). It's still either the best or worst item, but now anyone can get it even if they've eaten already.
- Ascended Meme:
- Who Memed It?, in which memes created by the cast and crew or by fans are shown to players and they have to guess who made it. Topics usually involve behind-the-scenes in-jokes. Later episodes include a segment involving fan-made memes.
- The fan-made “gas leak” meme, which is about a gas leak causing the cast’s particularly silly/bizarre antics, has been referenced by the cast on multiple occasions.
- Bait-and-Switch:
- In a TNTL, Shayne does an impersonation of Alexander Hamilton brought back to life in the modern day and taken to a Broadway show (the implication being that it's Hamilton). Is this a show about... cats?
- In a TNTL, Shayne does an impersonation of Alexander Hamilton brought back to life in the modern day and taken to a Broadway show (the implication being that it's Hamilton).
- Big "OMG!": From one episode of Smosh Pit Theatre, Shayne and Arasha act out Angela’s middle school group chats from 2007, culminating in the following exchange:Shayne: (as Angela) She… was your FRIEND! She thought… you were KIDNEPAPPED! SHE THOUGHT YOU WERE KIDNEPAPPED!!!
Arasha: (as Lauren) It’s KIDNAPPED!
Shayne: (Beat) OOOOOHHHHHH MYYYY GOOOOOOOOOODDDD!!!!! - Black Comedy: Veered into during Try Not To Laugh, such as when Damien pretends to be Princess Diana's car driver or when Ian lists off the casualties of World War II while dressed as a giant taco.
- Blind Without 'Em: Angela needs glasses, but always forgets to bring them or leaves them in her car. Has turned into a Running Gag.
- Camp Gay: The "Gay Court" and "Gay Airports" bits from Tommy and Chanse (who are both gay).Chanse: *vogueing with aircraft marshal sticks* This way, plane, uh! This way, plane, yes!
- Cordon Bleugh Chef: Garrett in "Eat it or Yeet it." He deliberately comes up with weird combinations, which are sometimes good, usually terrible.
- Eating Pet Food: One “Eat It or Yeet It” item turns out to be fried cat food, as Angela finds out the hard way.
- Eat That: Players in "Eat it or Yeet it" are presented an item and must decide if they'll try it based on looks in the five second countdown.
- Embarrassing Old Photo: A meme on Who Memed It? with a picture of a preteen Angela.Angela: OH—HEY! TURN THAT OFF! Stop, stop! No, I'm literally—NOOOO! NOOOO!Anthony: Whoever made this meme made Angela cry, okay.
- Epic Fail:
- In the first episode of Spelling Bee-kini Wax, Shayne as Sentencer (person who uses the word in a sentence) says "In seventh grade, I didn't have any, and that's why I'm still a virgin!" for the word "Rhythm."Damien: The sentence didn't have the word rhythm in it!
- During an episode of 2 Truths & 1 Lie
against his ex-girlfriend, Ian briefly forgets the rules of the game and accidentally sprays Pam when she says that he lied about having cheated on her. The video has to be cut so Ian can clarify that he didn't cheat on her as she prepares to burst into tears and Damien, Courtney, and Shayne freak out. - In a Christmas episode of Spelling Bee-kini Wax, Ian gets "Mistletoe." He spells it correctly, but specifically puts a space between "mistle" and "toe" so the judges call it as wrong and he gets waxed.
- Angela accidentally thinking that 9/11 happened in 2011 during Beopardy. This has become a Running Gag in the videos, with the calendar on the table in Bit City reading 9/11/11.
- In a special Beopardy with contestants who had lost the most in previous episodes, Angela is there, too. It's realized much later that they miscalculated and weren't supposed to have Angela as a contestant because she had won several games of Beopardy before. This is revealed in a question on Smosh Family Feud, which leads Angela to (temporarily) Rage Quit the episode.
- In the first episode of Spelling Bee-kini Wax, Shayne as Sentencer (person who uses the word in a sentence) says "In seventh grade, I didn't have any, and that's why I'm still a virgin!" for the word "Rhythm."
- Foreign Queasine: Played with for some of the Eat It or Yeet It episodes based on cultural foods, such as Indian food with Arasha, Jewish food with Rachel, Chinese food with Olivia, Filipino food with Kimmy, and soul food with Keith. Some of the dishes are pretty terrible, but because they've been purposefully tampered with rather than being foreign.
- Freak Out: When Angela finds out she ate fried cat food.
- Good News, Bad News: In Spelling Bee-kini Wax 5, Kimmy is the only one to spell anything correctly and thus wins, but still spelled two words wrong.Shayne: Kimmy, you've won! But you're still getting waxed.
- Hoist by His Own Petard:
- In the "Potluck" episode of Eat It or Yeet it! (featuring the wheel instead of a bell, so no one out and no one is safe), Tommy creates "Turkey, but Cold," a disgusting blended turkey frozen into a cube with a bone stuck in it. The wheel lands on Tommy (everyone else avoided making overly disgusting dishes for this very reason).
- Happens three times to Shayne in the "All Juice" episode of Eat It or Yeet It! (where everything is a drink). The first is the episode itself, as it was based on his Running Gag "Daddy's Juice!", the second was ringing the bell for a green drink, then getting cold feet and offering to trade it with Noah in exchange for the Big Bite, only for the green drink to be the best item, being a mix of green health smoothies from various restaurants around LA, and the Big Bite (which was the worst item) was "Pizza Juice" based on his "You're my favourite pizza place!" Running Gag.
- I Ate WHAT?!: The premise of "Eat it or Yeet it!", where contestants find out what they ate after eating it. Also the concept for "Culinary Crimes", where they figure out what ingredients were substituted in a recipe found online.
- Iconic Outfit: Olivia started wearing a purple and pink windbreaker jacket and pants set, originally a costume for Try Not to Laugh, in almost every video.
- Instantly Proven Wrong: In one of the channel’s “Smoshminster Dog Show” videos, during the “call the dog to you” challenge, Shayne says that Jolene (one of the dogs) would not come over to him if he was the last person on Earth. Once Jolene is let go to do the challenge, she immediately comes over to Shayne.
- I Resemble That Remark!: One meme on Who Memed It is of Shayne leaning over and pointing at a meme, inadvertently covering it up for the players and the audience, something he tends to do a lot. Shayne starts to do exactly that before realizing it.
- Large Ham: Pretty much everyone has entered this territory at one point or another, but Shayne and Angela are contenders for being the biggest hams on the entire channel.
- Lightswitch Surprise: In Try Not to Laugh #67, for Courtney's turn in the seat, Shayne turns off the lights and stands next to her as Courtney FREAKING Miller when the lights turn on, then turns the lights off again and is gone when they turn on again. Jackie does it to Shayne, saying "I have been with a white man before."
- Loony Fan: One Smosh Theatre had everyone draw lines from a hat that were creepy messages from fans.
- Mad Libs Catch Phrase: Shayne's recurring character in Try Not to Laugh (referred to as "Dumpster Wizard" in an interview, but was also named Skimpy Jiggles, Jr., in a Smosh Games play of Red Dead Redemption 2), who says "So, weary traveler. Looking to enter..." This varies from "The Cave of Terror," Dave & Buster's, Abercrombie & Fitch, Starbucks, Metallica tribute concert ("Looking to Enter Sandman, eh?").
- The Nicknamer: Damien has a tendency to refer to his friends and coworkers with nicknames like Shanye (Shayne), Ethan (Ian), Olivera (Olivia), Ungela (Angela), Spenner (Spencer), Tomathan (Tommy), Gardetto (Garrett), Kimbo (Kimmy), Kiki (Kiana), Corgan Melman (Courtney Miller), and Erin (from work).
- No-Sell:
- Ian getting waxed in "Spelling Bee-kini Wax''. He doesn't notice it (this is only for his first appearance, though).Rachel the waxer: Dude, what are you into?
- Shayne and malic acid (the "sour" part of sour candy). He's immune to it.
- Ian getting waxed in "Spelling Bee-kini Wax''. He doesn't notice it (this is only for his first appearance, though).
- Painful Body Waxing: "Spelling Bee-kini Wax", where contestants get a bikini wax if they spell a word wrong.
- Revenge:
- One episode of "Eat it or Yeet it!" has Garrett as a contestant, with the wheel rigged to make it more likely to land on him (he has multiple large slices while everyone else a single small slice). Everyone makes an item based on the worst thing they had to eat.
- Episode five of Spelling Bee-kini Wax has Sarah as a contestant, and is titled "The Revenge".
- Screw This, I'm Out of Here!:
- In an episode of Smosh Family Feud, Angela finds out she wasn’t supposed to be in a Loser's Beopardy episode, because she won in most of her appearances, but the crew counted wrong. So she gets up and starts to walk off the set.
- Shout-Out:
- One episode of "Eat it or Yeet It!" had everything coloured green. So of course the first item was Green Eggs and Ham.
- Shaped Like Itself: "Burger but Cold": A hamburger, but cold.Courtney: Ingredients are as follows! Burger! Freezer!
- Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: Producers Matt Raub and Sarah Whittle.
- Special Guest: This channel has featured various celebs and other YouTubers on the channel. Perhaps most common are Damien and Shayne’s old castmates from So Random!, but recently there have been frequent crossovers with Dropout. Other guests include Zachary Levi and Rhett & Link.
- Spelling Bee: Spelling Bee-kini Wax, where wrong words are punished by a bikini wax.
- Spit Take: "Try Not to Laugh" has one person hold water in their mouth to make it harder to not laugh and obvious if they do laugh. Temporarily changed to harmonicas during the COVID-19 Pandemic, but eventually reverted back to water.
- Surreal Humor: "Try Not To Laugh" veers into this a lot, but it's generally a staple of Olivia's kind of comedy.Shayne: [after spitting] What the fuck is this!? What the fuck is this joke?
Olivia: It's not a joke, it's a scene. - Tastes Better Than It Looks: Some of the items in "Eat it or Yeet it!" The Big Bite will sometimes be the best item.
- Thousand-Yard Stare: Shayne gets one after finding out he ate fried bull penis.
- Transplant: Trevor Evarts, who worked on Mythical Kitchen, explicitly resigned from being a regular there so that he could pursue being a full-time cast member on Smosh instead. However he still makes appearances on the former.
- Very Special Episode:
- Try Not to Laugh #69 is a farewell episode to/roast of Sarah Whittle, who was moving back North Dakota.
- The final episode of Eat It Or Yeet It has the entire cast participating at a long table meant to resemble The Last Supper, with Garrett as Jesus.
- Vomit Indiscretion Shot: If someone is really disgusted by the food in Eat It or Yeet It!, they're given a bucket to spit it out in, hence the "yeet it" part.
