Re:Turn is a duology of 2D Explorer Horror games by Red Ego Games.
One-Way Trip, the first game, stars Saki and her five college friends on a post-graduation vacation/camping trip to a forest, to celebrate one last time before entering their adult lives. Then an argument erupts between Saki's fiancé Sen and their friend Yuuta, causing them to split up... just in time for them to start vanishing. Saki tracks them down to an old, abandoned train that turns out to be very haunted, with a Shadow Creature hunting them all down. Now tasked with finding her friends while also dealing with visions of the train's last days given by a little ghost girl named Ayumi, Saki must brave the horrors and escape this train.
Gameplay consists of 2D exploration and puzzle solving, with a focus on storytelling over combat.
Re:Turn 2: Runaway takes place right after the first game. Saki and Sen, having survived the spirits and reunited, attempt to leave the train and go back, only for the evil spirit controlling everything to split them apart once again. If Saki wants to escape for real, and bring Sen with her, she'll have to take the fight directly to the spirits and get to the bottom of everything. Gameplay is similar to the first game; players control Saki in a 2D environment and navigate it to solve puzzles. This time, however, monsters will chase you down and you'll need to run and hide from them, or die.
This game contains examples of:
- Bad People Abuse Animals: Evil Ayumi murders the cat that Saki took a liking to in the finale, presumably just to torment Saki a little more after already taking all her friends.
- Big Bad: Evil Ayumi/"Kay" is the evil spirit controlling the other spirits haunting the Ghost Train and trying to feast on the souls of Saki and her friends.
- Bittersweet Ending: The normal ending of 2, "A Bittersweet Victory", has Saki burn the doll and purge Evil Ayumi, freeing all the souls she's consumed, but she has to say goodbye to her love interest and friends in the process, who will pass on to the next life.
- Demonic Possession: Evil Ayumi's M.O. is to do this to people. She directly does this to Ayumi herself and presumably Kay beforehand, then turns Saki's fiancé Sen into an extension of her will; her end goal is to do this to Saki herself.
- Ghost Train: The main setting is one of these stuck in a forest. As Saki learns in her visions, it used to be a high-class train, but it was a victim of the Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which turned everyone there into spirits haunting the train, except for Saki and Sen, who are the opposite-sex reincarnations of a couple in that train.
- Immediate Sequel: "Re:Turn 2: Runaway" isn't a sequel so much as a Part 2 to the original game, which immediately picks up with Saki and Sen's reunion and the reveal that Sen's previous female incarnation made a deal with Evil Ayumi to make Saki his/hers forever — he leaves, possessed by the spirit, and Saki tries to escape, but soon finds herself lured back with the lure of saving her friends.
- Kindhearted Cat Lover: Saki in Runaway comes across a cat in a cabin near the train and takes a liking to it. One achievement requires you to pet it 10 times.
- Reset Button Ending: In 2, burning the talisman along with Ayumi's doll appears to take Saki back in time before she went on the doomed camping trip with her friends in the first place, and she convinces Sen not to go.
