Infinity Nikki is a free-to-play open-world adventure/Gacha Game developed and published by Papergames. It is the fifth game in the Nikki Series, following the mobile games Love Nikki - Dress Up Queen and Shining Nikki and was released worldwide on December 5, 2024 for Android, iOS, PlayStation 5, and Microsoft Windows; it later launched for Steam in April 2025.
Nikki and her animal companion Momo are preparing for Nikki's graduation and searching her attic for an outfit to wear to the ball, when they find a fancy glowing black and red dress called the Threads of Reunion that transports them away to a ruined world. A voice calls to Nikki and guides her in using the magical force of Whim, leading her to where Ena, the Curator, is chained up. Nikki is imbued with the Heart of Infinity from her and tasked with finding the Miracle Outfits and saving the new world she's in, before she's transported fully to Miraland — a world where many conflicts are settled using clothing-based stylist battles, and magic wielded using fashionable outfits called Ability Outfits.
In Florawish, the first town Nikki and Momo arrive at (which is part of the first region, Wishfield), wishes are written on paper or in bottles and tied high into the Great Tree, and Faewish Sprites gather people's wishes for the sacred Wishing One. But people all around Wishfield are falling into comas for unspecified reasons after making strange wishes using Quick-Wish bottles, and it's up to Nikki to explore, investigate, and use her abilities granted through the Heart of Infinity to solve the problem — with the magical power of fashion.
December 2024 saw the first Limited Event with the Companion's Day festival, followed by the larger Wish Festival Event. New events have been added in updates roughly every month, with minor additional events added in between. The events have limited-time quests as well as added plot lines regarding Nikki's learning about and participation in the festivals; there are also additional limited banners to pull rare high-level outfits and additional, sometimes permanent content.
A major update in November 2025 added a new area of Miraland, Itzaland, and a full storyline, with later events and seasons happening in that area.
Jump into these tropes:
- 100% Completion: The game tracks how many Whimstars and Dews of Inspiration you've found in each zone. This also counts for the different variations on other places. (On the Fireworks Islands, they're Whim Balloons and Dews of Firework; on Serenity Island they're Whim Bubbles and Serenity Dewdrops; on Danqing Island they're Whim Jade and Danqing Jade Soul.)
- Abandoned Area: Miraland as a whole is littered with long-forgotten ancient ruins dating back as far back as the War of Heavens. Some of the more notable ruins include:
- The Breezy Meadows area contains a long-uninhabited, run-down palace that was formerly Queen Philomia's castle in the southeast corner. The Eerie Season in March 2025 added a dungeon to the area that helps explain more about the Queen's past.
- Also located in the Breezy Meadows (in the southwest corner) is the Abandoned Fanatic Wisher Camp, a fortified stretch of road home to a former military encampment with tents, yurts, and fortifications made of logs sharpened to points. Once home to a fanatic set of humans who attacked Wishfield (after blaming Stylists for the loss of the Wishing One, which was expanded on during the Blue Tears Season), it's now home to nothing but a lot of Esselings and, as of the Blue Tears Season, the cave where Sith the Serpent secluded herself.
- The Wishing Woods have the Swordsmith Ruins, a fallen down fortification where the buildings are still guarded by living Iron Squirrel statues.
- The entirety of the Abandoned District, west of Stoneville, was abandoned by the majority of its population when the Stonetree Disaster struck and the Stonetrees rose along with storms that flooded the valley. In the present time the area is only inhabited by Pieceys, and among their Thuddy Squash houses are the fallen structures and foundations of buildings that used to be human occupied and used. Within the district is an even more abandoned region in the form of Prosperville, which initially is cut off from the rest of the Abandoned District by strong storms.
- Iztaland has the Coliseum and various buildings around it, which have fallen into disuse since the fall of the Titans.
- Ability Required to Proceed: Two areas of Wishfield — the Abandoned District and the Wishing Woods — require Nikki to unlock a required Ability Outfit through the Heart of Infinity before she can enter and navigate them fully. Updates released the Awaken Springbloom Outfit to navigate Serenity Island, the Fireworks Outfit for Fireworks Island, the Danqing Craft outfit for Danqing Island, the Gigantification Outfit and Shadow Swiftweave in Itzaland, and the Nefarious Shadows outfit for the Wanxiang Realm.
- Adam Smith Hates Your Guts:
- The Stray Hatty vendor charges more Blings for each Whimstar purchase from it, staring with 10,000 for the first, immediately going up ten times to 100K for the second, and culminating in 3 million Blings for the eighth. Total cost? 7.1 million Blings total for eight Whimstars.
- Upgrading the stats on your outfits (referred to as "Glow Up" in-game) requires more materials per level until they're maxed out.
- Achievement System: The Advanced Courses section of Nikki's Pear-Pal features a large number of tasks for her to complete as set by the Stylist's Guild that are intended to help her grow as a Stylist, and which, out of universe, encourage the player to explore the map and engage with all of the game's many mechanics in exchange for Diamonds. Only a few of them pertain to completing the main story, while the rest encourage her to use her Insight-collecting Abilities, play box games and mini-games, craft clothes, complete sidequests, take photos, use the Realms, and more. Completing certain numbers of these achievements will also increase the Stylist Rank on her membership card that's viewable to other real-life players of the game, and earn her even more rewards, such as Blings, Energy Crystals, and even free pulls on the Permanent Banner.
- Aerith and Bob:
- The first person Nikki meets in Miraland is named Dada, whose sister is Bebe; this is soon followed by Nonoy. But there's also common names for other characters like Ruby, John, Angelica, and the like.
- On Danqing Island and in the Wanixang Realm, Nikki's Western-style name stands out among the very Chinese-inspired names like Cui Yanheng, Yue Bai, Liu Xiaozhi, Du Lanhui, and Jin Ziyan.
- In Itzaland, Nikki and Momo (and their friend Wilhelm) stand out among the Shroomlings who have names that most often end in repeating syllables (e.g. Abutata, Domibaba, Migugu, Roucoco).
- The Ageless: The Pieceys are essentially a race of living Bedsheet Ghosts made out of pieces of fabric that have been reanimated by "strong wishes" from their once-living owners, and according to offhand dialogue from various Pieceys, they can live for many centuries, possibly even millennia, as long as enough of their original fabric remains to sustain their Whim. However, their fabric is not like biological flesh and can't heal damage without external assistance, so they have to be careful if they hope to live that long.
- Airplane Arms: Nikki floats with her arms out to her sides like an airplane when using any of her Floating Ability outfits.
- Alertness Blink:
- Some animals and insects are shy and require Nikki to approach slowly so as to not startle them into running or hiding; if she's spotted, a yellow ! symbol pops over their head before they run away. It changes to a ? if she's moving towards them slowly.
- Esselings have a red ! that pops up when they spot Nikki and start to attack.
- Algorithmic Story Branching: The four stats for the Behemoth fawnling Nikki raises will determine the Behemoth's final form and adult fate.
- Alternate Continuity: In relation to the other games in the Nikki franchise, it's made clear from the beginning that this iteration of Nikki has never been to Miraland before. Furthermore, aside from the two protagonists and the game being set in Miraland, everything from the lore to the characters to the names of the seven nations are completely new. However, there are references to places from Love Nikki - Dress Up Queen, such as Cecia and Wintermount, and one of the phrases that can be placed on the player's ID card is "Back again to save Miraland", acknowledging that players might be returning to a version of Miraland even if Nikki isn't. The 1.5 update has stated that Nikki has attempted to save Miraland before but failed, and implies the Seer has seen the many times various versions of Nikki have failed to save various versions of Miraland across the universe. This has become part of Nikki's wider lore as of the Danqing Season, where it's discovered that the Danqing Realm was created by Nikki in a past life in grief after failing to save Miraland, and took on the role of Artist Cat as she crafted the region. It's thus implied that the previous games are part of a multiverse of Nikki repeatedly trying and failing to save a version of Miraland before she inevitably fails and is saved by The Seer to try again.
- Alternative Calendar: The years are counted from A.W. — After the War of Heavens, when eight great Stylists fought against the Dark to save Miraland. Nikki arrives in 1002 A.W.
- Always Check Behind the Chair: Some chests, collectable items, or Dews of Inspiration are concealed from view: underneath piles of leaves, behind breakable crates, or simply out in the open behind parts of the environment that the player will not typically see or go out of their way to access while passing through an area.
- Amazing Technicolor Population: The Faewish Sprites, a race of fairy-like magical beings said to have been created personally by the local deity, all have royal blue skin.
- Ambiguous Gender: The Fufus are a mysterious, vaguely fae-esque race resembling Cute Monster Girls, except with some clear ambiguity around the "Girl" part. They're all kind of soft-looking and vaguely androgynous in a childlike way with high-pitched, childlike voices that mostly just sound like cooing, and could just as easily be evoking young boys as girls. They're also referred to only by name and never with pronouns, and their names are all just epithets, such as "Loving Fufu" or "Angry Fufu".
- And Your Reward Is Clothes: New clothing, accessories, and hairstyle designs for Nikki — as well as cloaks for Momo — are often the rewards for completing quests and challenges along with in-game currency. This is justified since this is based on a dress-up game with a focus on dressing Nikki up, and fashion plays a large role in the in-universe cultures, explaining why they would give you this sort of thing as a valuable reward.
- And Your Reward Is Interior Decorating:
- Going through previously-completed dungeons with specific challenges on request from the Sanctum of the Observant has Nikki help them find Impressions (paintings) that she can then put on display one at a time in the church.
- As of 1.9., Nikki can obtain and build items to decorate her home island by taking pictures of various items around Miraland.
- Animal Eyes: Parksolians are draconic humanoids that possess reptilian pupils.
- Anti-Frustration Features: The game is deliberately designed from the ground up to be relaxing and satisfying, and so it has many of these, with more added in every update in accordance with user feedback.
- When purifying a Greedy Pouch, if it was defeated near hazardous terrain such as deep water, all the Bling it drops will only scatter a short distance from the edge of said terrain so you can still collect it all.
- You can instantly retry failed mini-games (though you must pay again for the next attempt).
- Nikki can rent a Whimcycle from any station in the Breezy Meadows; she's never required to retrieve a Whimcycle she left lying around beforehand.
- In Stylist Battles, the game automatically sorts the highest scoring items to the upper left. While not bulletproof since it sometimes fails to account for bonuses, a player can easily maximize score with a little trial and error.
- Some missions require you to show up at a certain time period of the day, but you can instead go to the assigned spot whenever you want and interact with the glowing spot; the game will automatically skip to the needed time period so you won't have to wait or boot up "Run, Pear Pal".
- Starting in v1.2, players can choose to skip playing "Run, Pear Pal" to skip time forward and just advance time immediately.
- Battles for the Realms of Dark and Breakthrough, and courses for the Realm of Eureka only need to be completed (as in, the boss fought and defeated, or the course run) by the player once in order to collect the rewards. Afterwards, players can just use the "Quick Challenge" button to spend their Vital Energy and collect the rewards immediately without any increased cost or penalties compared to if they'd played the challenge through for real. The player need only play them again if they missed any of the Advanced Course achievements associated with each kind of Realm Challenge on the first completion, or if they wish to beat their earlier time record for pure bragging rights. This prevents monotony, as these Realm Challenges will need to be completed many, many times in order to collect all of the Eurekas and color variations and to accrue crafting materials for special clothes that can't be obtained elsewhere.
- Animals and insects will never be frightened away by Esselings or using the incorrect Ability, whether that's shooting a Purification Orb, accidentally whacking an animal with the bug catching net or fishing rod, or anything else of that nature; they will only flee, if at all, if the player doesn't sneak while moving towards them. If they do flee, leaving the area long enough will have them return to be caught. Absolutely nothing will scare fish away. This is important, as many of the rarer insects and animals only spawn a few times or even just one time per real-time 24 hour period.
- In the event that you don't pick up something unique during a storyline that might be lost forever (like your game crashing before you're able to do so), you'll be sent a letter containing what you would've lost.
- Starting in v1.4, failing a mini game lets you immediately retry for another 100 Blings without having to go back and speak to the attendant first.
- Starting in v2.0, when Alison's Travel Shop is in town, the player is now able to simply teleport straight to her rather than having to locate her on foot. This is convenient, as she's a Twinmooner and is rather short, which can make her a bit hard to see.
- Anti-Grinding:
- There is a daily cap on the amount of Insight you can gather from collecting (200), fishing, bug catching, combat, Momo combat, animal grooming, home interactions (100 for the others), and Blings (160,000). While you can continue to collect resources (other than Blings), and have collected resources count towards Daily Wish tasks and Precise Tracking goals, Insight won't be counted after that until the daily server reset. (Insight purchased from the Realm of Nourishment and Blings purchased from the Realm of Escalation do not count towards any caps as long as the player has enough Vital Energy and items to exchange.)
- There is also a weekly cap (8,000) on how much Mira Journey experience can be gained, and after reaching level 90 it will no longer activate until the start of the next season.
- There is a weekly cap on the number of Astralites that can be earned selling things to Posey on the home island and a limit of 2000 Dreamland Stones per week, meaning that you can't just sell items endlessly or grind tasks to max out the Dreamland Showcase immediately.
- Anti Poop-Socking: Infinity Nikki's stamina system recharges at a rate of 1 Vital Energy per 5 real-time minutes, capping at 350, so it takes 29 hours and 10 minutes to recharge completely from zero. Vital Energy is required to farm Eurekas, certain crafting materials, and outfit upgrade materials, meaning it soft gates both vertical and horizontal progression.
- Artificial Human: Danqing Island and the Wanxiang Realm are both populated with people who were intentionally created to mimic real people. The people of Danqing Island were painted into being by Artist Cat and seem to be unaging, literally made of ink, and in a static world, because it's a painting. The Wangxian people started out as statues carved by the mysterious Geomancer that were then imbued with life by the deer goddess Chroma, and the people were instructed to imitate actual people from the Linlang Empire in an effort to learn how to be human.
- Artwork and Game Graphics Segregation: A small example occurs with the Fufus, the vaguely fae-esque ambiguously gendered Cute Monster Girls that the player can trade items to in exchange for Insight in the Realm of Nourishment. In the Advanced Courses achievements, the section for Fufu-related achievements shows a piece of artwork where the Fufus are trying to get Nikki to trade with them, and the Animal Grooming (called Fear ingame) and Collection (called Loving ingame) Fufus appear to have swapped personalities- Fear is sweetly and adorably presenting their Animal Grooming emblem to Nikki, while Loving is shyly clutching their Collection emblem and keeping off to the side with Visible Silence. This suggests that their personalities may have changed sometime after this artwork was created and it was never updated to match.
- Attack Its Weak Point: Bosses can only be harmed by attacking exposed vulnerabilities.
- Attractive Zombie: The Sovereign of Elegant, the Banshee of Shimmer Pond, is a beautiful woman with grey, crumbling skin who only comes out at night and draws stylists in to be her puppets. She's hinted to be Nonoy's missing birth mother, who went missing fifteen years ago with many other stylists.
- Attract Mode: The game's first login screen showed a gameplay movie in the background set to "Together Till Infinity", the game's main theme. Later updates to the game have been more low-key and instead show short scenes from the game's current limited-time event, often with Nikki dressed in at least one of the limited-time outfits. The 2.0 Update shows various scenes from Itzaland, the new area added.
- Bad Luck Mitigation Mechanic: Every ten Resonances on the gacha banners guarantees a 4-star outfit piece, and every twenty Resonances guarantees a 5-star outfit piece (if the banner has a 5-star outfit); using Ocean's Blessings guarantees a selected piece to be obtained by at least the fifth time a 5-star piece would be given (so at maximum, 100 pulls). The game is (so far) even more generous on banners without 5-star outfits, where every five Resonances guarantees a 4-star outfit piece. Furthermore, duplicates on 4- and 5-star components won't be pulled until the entire outfit is obtained at least once. Averted with the Surprise-O-Matic, which doesn't up the chances of 5-star pieces even if you've gotten everything else.
- Beware the Nice Ones: Nikki is a Nice Girl, but when she's upset, she will threaten others and stand up against them. For example, she threatened the men in the Ripple Wine Cellar who sold shoddy Floragale cloth, and threatens to "resort to force" against a Faewish Sprite.
- Big Boo's Haunt: One of the two dungeons in the Abandoned District is set on the Ghost Train. This is a passenger train that has a security lockdown mode called the Ghost Protocol (which summons a bunch of invincible Bedsheet Ghosts that patrol the train, grabbing any intruders to physically toss them off the train). The train has not needed to use the Ghost Train protocol in a very long time, so it's been repurposed into a fun haunted house experience for the locals' enjoyment with lots of homemade wooden Halloween-esque decorations of ghosts and pumpkins, harmless party horn and confetti popper jumpscares, and funky haunted house background music
. The Ghost Protocol has to be enacted for real for the first time in centuries due to someone else trying to steal the Aureum Vase, and the haunted house decorations are still there when Nikki has to make her way towards the train's engineer since the protocol activates automatically once it's at risk. After the main quest, the train returns to being a haunted funhouse ride, where Nikki can work her way towards the engine each time. - Bird-Poop Gag: The "Peace with Birds" hat is covered in white splats, with the description acknowledging it.
- Bittersweet Ending:
- The "New Bloom Festival" event ends with the visiting musician Master Du not exactly fulfilling her mission as intended. Though she and Nikki learn about three other people's ancestors, the "Mark" she was looking for on behalf of her ancestor is likely lost to history. But she manages to return the paper crane Mark gave her ancestor as per local traditions and gets the inspiration for an epic song based on Florawish's past restoration.
- The Blue Tears Festival has Nikki uncover the history of the time of the Fanatic Wishers with local historians, who also research the story of Sith the Serpent and Alesiya, who was one of the earliest users of Whim after the War of the Darkness. Sith was forced to Mercy Kill Alesiya as she had been corrupted while trying to wield the Aurosa Scepter to protect the survivors in Wishfield and lost her mind in the process. Only two months later the Eight emerged, and if Alesiya had still been alive she might have been one of them. There is nothing that can be done about the past — all this happened a thousand years ago — but Nikki is able to sooth the weeping spirit of Sith and assure her that the true story of her and Alesiya will be told, correcting the history of their lives.
- Blue Is Heroic: Guardian Beast Whirls is a massive glowing blue creature that serves as the Mothershroom's dedicated friend and protector. Its corruption turns it into an example of Purple Is Powerful until it's freed.
- Body Paint: Adult Shroomlings are mostly nude (they might wear capes, ponchos, decoration on their shroomcaps, etc.), and many paint their bodies and faces with swirls of paint.
- Boring, but Practical:
- The body spray "Immersed in Thoughts" lets Nikki's purifying orbs pierce armored targets from the front, allowing her to confront them head-on instead of maneuvering for a rear shot, greatly simplifying combat.
- Unbridled Growth Hair Oil lets Nikki fire purifying orbs much faster, and that's it.
- Bug Catching: After unlocking and crafting the Afternoon Shine Bug Catching Outfit, Nikki can swap into it to catch the various bugs fluttering around Miraland; they're used to make outfits mostly, but are also needed for some quests. Sometimes, Whimstars (or their variants) hide themselves as special shimmering insects that must be caught using this skill in order to collect the Star.
- Bullfight Boss: In order to get rid of the Coliseum Behemoth once and for all, Nikki must trick the boss into hitting enough of the giant switches to raise the arena platform up into the light, upon which a gate will rise and entrap the two combatants. The next objective is to lower the gate by getting the monster to charge into each of the switches attached to it, all while avoiding the platform getting smaller beneath Nikki and the beast. Once the obstruction has been removed, the Behemoth will automatically destroy the debris blocking it from leaving and will run off into the wilderness, finally freed.
- Brainwashed and Crazy: Due to Medael's corruption, Guardian Beast Whirls is forced to attack Nikki when she arrives to free it.
- But Thou Must!: While dialogue options with different meanings are available, they are rarely relevant; the game, in the form of Momo correcting Nikki, will guide the player in the direction the story or conversation is intended to go.
- Can't Argue with Elves: The more antagonistic Faewish Sprites often are arrogant and dismissive when they bar Nikki from doing what's needed or otherwise boss her about, and especially when they're being antagonistic towards Pieceys. This stems from them being descendants of The Wishing One and considering themselves better than others.
- Cartoon Creature:
- Stray Hatty is a mysterious nonhuman NPC who hangs around the grove of trees west of the Stylists' Guild. They're largely mammalian, with short white fur and a short snout, amber-colored eyes, a thick, woody-looking tail, long fur (or flaps of flesh) that drag on the ground around their feet, and antler-esque protuberances attached to their head where one would expect ears, but which curve down frontwards like elaborate tusks. However, they also have two-toed talon-esque feet, like an ostrich, and most of their body is concealed from neck to feet under a cloak.
- The Behemoths of Itzaland are three story-tall bipedal mammalian beasts with a mix of features. A predominant influence is wolves, with their digitigrade feet, fluffy fur, lanky builds, and the general shape of their heads. Mixed in are some goat-like features, such as a dark-colored beard and ears that point back rather than up, as well as a snout that squares off rather than tapering to a point. Their horns also give them a mild Planimal element- they have the texture and appearance of wood, and in baby Behemoths, the horns start out as little green buds.
- Changing Clothes Is a Free Action: After becoming a Miraland stylist, Nikki gains the ability to switch outfits in seconds, with Ability Outfits granting special abilities such as the ability to float, purify Esselings, or instantly become an expert electrician or musician. You can also see other Stylists in their own Styling contests quickly changing between outfits, and Florawish has some local specialties like a magic version of Hopscotch which temporarily changes your outfit when you step on a square.
- Clothes Make the Superman: The Ability Outfits Nikki obtains grant her special abilities, such as the ability to float through the air or purify Esselings.
- Combat Stilettos: The Wind of Purity Ability Outfit has Nikki battling while wearing the Airborne Steps shoes: gold heeled lace-up sandals.
- Collect-a-Thon Platformer: There's a lot more emphasis on platforming than other similar open-world games, along with collecting Whimstars and Dews of Inspiration (or their variants).
- Color-Coded Elements: The five outfit styles in the game each have a color associated with them.
- Cool is blue.
- Elegant is yellow.
- Fresh is green.
- Sexy is purple.
- Sweet is pink.
- Continuity Nod:
- As soon as the player can access the Wardrobe to change Nikki's appearance, the player is able to switch out Nikki's new twintail hairstyle with her straight banged hair from all the previous games, for longtime fans who prefer it.
- Cecia and Wintermount, two cities from Love Nikki - Dress Up Queen, are referenced multiple times as places in Miraland that people go to or have come back from and are part of the Heartcraft Kingdom; it's implied Cecia is a capital city.
- The Sea of Stars
outfit, an iconic outfit that can be obtained in Love Nikki - Dress Up Queen and Shining Nikki as Star Sea, was made available in April 2025 as a Miracle Outfit.
- Cool Plane:
- The Dream Warehouse's Cranes are Magitek flying machines designed to look like very large origami cranes, the largest of which is the Great Crane, which is roughly the size of a fighter jet. In a variation, the Cranes have zero combat utility and appear to be nothing more than cultural items.
- A large paper airplane in the Sea of Stars flies from the entrance to the dock.
- Costume Porn: The Nikki franchise's dress-up game roots are heavily used in this game. Both a gacha system and a crafting system help unlock new outfits and clothing for Nikki to wear, ranging from casual wear to more regal and elaborate clothing, particularly for the higher rarity costumes.
- Cobweb Trampoline: Along with bouncy leaves, there are floating nets all around the world that Nikki can bounce on to gain height. Some are tilted and will bounce her at an angle.
- The Corrupter: Lady Medael hurt the Guardian Beast of the Mothershroom by infecting it with a corrupting essence all while driving it to the very top of Spira.
- Covers Always Lie:
- The game's first icon and loading screen shows Nikki wearing the Bubbly Voyage hairstyle in pink, but in-game said hairstyle only comes in blonde and green. The 1.5 update does show the pink hairstyle in cutscenes, however. The dying system introduced in the same update does allow changing the color of the hairstyle, but the shades don't include the exact shade of pink as the icon and cutscenes.
- One of the game's major pieces of key art that's still in use today depicts a different version of the Abandoned District: the stonetrees are much closer together, and the visible body of water below is absent. This may derive from a much, much older version of the Wishfield map that can still be found in the game files, which had the Abandoned District designed this way.
- Crate Expectations: There are crates all over Wishfield; Nikki can break them by making a plunging attack, and they'll either contain collectable fruits or Wiztle bugs for her to catch. Some will have chests hidden behind them in alcoves, while others will contain Whimstars that Nikki has to chase down.
- Creator Provincialism:
- Since the game is made by a Chinese company, the Linlang Empire (the game's Fantasy Counterpart Culture to China) makes a lot of appearances, and it so far has always served a starring role every February for Lunar New Year.
- Danqing Island, introduced during v1.8, features a lot of music
in the style of Huai opera
—a niche style of Chinese opera that originated during the 1800s in Jiangsu province, which just so happens to be where developer Papergames was founded. For the area storyline's final boss music
, they anachronistically combine that style of opera with the much older Ci poetry
and lyrics written in Middle Chinese, which are strongly associated with the Song Dynasty around the turn of the first millennium AD.
- Crossover: 1.9. had a short event with Stardew Valley. A Junimo lands on Nikki's home island after being teleported there through the stars and mistakes her for the farmer. After some short interactions, the Junimo leaves and gifts an outfit themed on Stardew Valley and a music box shaped like the chicken. Grooming the music box also gives extra songs and an additional hairclip.
- Damage-Sponge Boss: Corrupted Whirls has 66 HP in the first phase alone. In its final phase, it has a whopping 360. No other boss in the entire game comes close.
- Death from Above: Nikki's plunging attack deals area of effect damage on impact, required to defeat certain bosses.
- Death Is a Slap on the Wrist: Nikki losing her five hearts is a temporary setback. In the overworld she'll be sent back to the last warp spire she was at; in a dungeon she'll be teleported back to the last checkpoint she triggered; and in the Realm of the Dark (replaying Boss Battles) the option to rechallenge is offered immediately. Nikki then restarts with all hearts intact.
- Defeat Means Menial Labor: After Avicinda is defeated along with his boss Wish Master Chigda, he chooses to work as an assistant in Dorobo's restaurant to make up for what he's done.
- De-power: After obtaining the Heart of Infinity from Ena, Nikki temporarily loses the outfits (and their corresponding abilities) used in the tutorial and has to recreate them after landing in Miraland proper. She gets both the Bubbly Voyage and Wind Of Purity outfits back before leaving the Stylist's Guild Memorial of Miraland.
- Deuteragonist: Momo is considered the secondary protagonist of the game after Nikki herself. After acquiring Nikki's Shrinking Outfit in the main quest, the player is given the option to play as him (with Nikki hanging off his head in a miniature form), though this use is limited to the Wishing Woods.
- Developer's Foresight:
- If a quest requires you to do something, gather something, and/or talk to someone, Nikki will mention outright if she's already done what's needed for it before it applies.
- Nikki and Momo can teleport around the Wishing Woods while she is using the Shrinking Ability. However, if they teleport to a place outside of the Wishing Woods (the only place it can be used), Nikki will immediately shift out of being shrunk down once they land.
- Don't Clear My Name: Queen Philomia was historically believed to be a cruel tyrant, even to her own family, which is why she was exiled to the Queen's Palace and later was poisoned. It's later revealed during Encore Season that she was actually a benevolent queen who wanted to equalize society — something the nobility severely resented, which led to her poisoning. As Queen Philomia was dying, she asked the loyal Ms. Glove—whose real name was Rosanisse and who had once tried to kill the queen but turned against Duke Price to become loyal to her—not to let anyone clear her name, not even her sister, and they should instead let Philomia be believed historically as a tyrant. This was so her younger sister Olivia could take the throne unchallenged by the angry nobles who despised Philomia's desire for an equal world, and Olivia and Ms. Glove together could bring about the ideals Philomia wanted. It took Nikki, centuries later, to clear her name in the history books and prove that Philomia was not the tyrant she'd been slandered as.
- Door to Before:
- Doors not involved, but when you explore a cave, the end of the route deposits you right back at the start of the cave (and the end of the loading transition area) so you can easily choose to go through it all over again or exit back to the rest of the world. Of course, this end-of-cave-to-entrance loop is only one-way: there is no way for Nikki to have gotten to that ending section from the beginning.
- A very early design for Wishfield incorporated a design that had Nikki making her way clockwise around a huge island until she gets to the Wishing Woods, connecting back to Florawish where the game starts. In the final version Nikki travels west until getting to the Abandoned District, after which she turns back east to Florawish to go to the Wishing Woods.
- Embarrassing Hobby: During the Revelry Season event, Momo ends up with the Carnival Mask attached to his face near the end of the main event quest. This mask creates a Mental World called the Illusion Zone for the character the mask is attached to, in which their biggest wish becomes reality. Momo's... is to be a fantastic dancer with long legs who can protect Nikki. When returning to the Illusion Zone in another event quest, the newly-named Momo Longlegs shows up again, and Momo begs Nikki to stop looking at him out of embarrassment. While Momo is ashamed, Nikki finds it sweet, even noting that with or without long legs, Momo is her closest family and companion.
- Equipment Upgrade: Outfits and Eurekas can be enhanced for increased stats. Somewhat subverted in that stats have no combat utility; instead, they enhance Nikki's score in Styling contests.
- Escort Mission:
- The back half of the Cloudsea Realm courses in v1.5 are "Bubble Escorts" where Nikki must protect a giant pink bubble that moves on a rail of sorts from hazards, such as activating switches to turn off fans that will blow the bubble away, or moving barriers to block cannons whose projectiles will pop the bubble. The main challenge is ascertaining when the bubble is fully past the danger, and finding the quickest path for Nikki to take to deactivate the next hazard before the bubble gets there. To make this easier, hazards are arranged in groups, and there's a checkpoint between each group that the bubble will respawn from in the event that it's destroyed so that the player only has to try again from the beginning of the group instead of the beginning of the entire level.
- The "Lights Guiding the Way" minigame in v1.7 has Nikki using a special lantern to guard ghostly echoes of people from long ago as they try to reach specific places. The echo-people will move of their own accord to a specific spot, and the player has to keep Nikki within a certain radius of each person so that her lantern can keep them protected; straying too far for more than five seconds will result in failure and the player will have to start over from the beginning. The twist is that these people will walk on bridges, stairways, and obstacles that existed back then and are now absent in the game's present day, forcing the player to find a way to stay close to them and follow them even as they walk in midair.
- Essence Drop: After reaching at least 1000 Insight points for any skill and opening the accompanying node, Nikki may gather essences of various items around the world as she collects them. Some are needed for crafting.
- Exotic Eye Designs:
- Faewish Sprites and Pieceys don't have any visible pupils or sclerae, unlike humans, Momo, and animals; their irises take up the entire visible portion of their eyes. Piecey eyes are all a solid cerulean blue and darken towards the middle in a way that evokes pupils, while Faewish Sprites have blue/purple (or occasionally gold) irises in a gradient and what looks like stars and constellations (complete with lines between the stars), giving their eyes a concave rather than a convex appearance.
- Many of the contact lenses Nikki can pick up have designs such as Blings, stars, feathers, snowflakes, and cat eye slits.
- Facial Markings:
- High Priestess Medael of the Docilists has markings that run all the way from her eyes to below her chin.
- The Chromafaces, introduced in v2.2, are Artificial Humans brought to life from statues that are distinguished by regular humans by the colorful marks on their faces. Most people's marks look like flowers, but some look like flames or multicolored vines.
- Failure Is the Only Option:
- The climax of the v1.7 storyline in the Serpentine Ruins features a sequence of Quick Time Events where the player witnesses a sequence of memories from Sith the Serpent about her best friend Alesiya, and must hold down the correct button/key when prompted in order for the events within the memories to have a good outcome. They start out slow and very easy, but as the contents of the memories grow darker, the prompts come faster and faster until they're nearly impossible to hit accurately, difficulty that has been interpreted as deliberate and representative of both characters' growing despair and desperation. The sequence ends with a prompt to draw a line across the screen, which is impossible to fail as the game will not progress until the player completes it — it depicts the moment when Sith was forced to Mercy Kill Alesiya after she'd been corrupted by Darkness while trying to protect the people of Wishfield who had survived the war.
- The climax of v2.2 features yet another set of Quick Time Events that tell the story of the goddess Chroma. During the final part, Chroma tries to rescue the Chromaface people from falling into the Dark by catching them with Wanxiang Power, but catching someone only temporarily holds them in midair until the power fades and they fall the rest of the way — showing Chroma's desperation and the futility of her actions. The sequence ends when the last Chromaface has fallen.
- Fairy Tale Free-for-All: The 2.4 storyline, "The Forest Need Not Listen", has Nikki venture into the Misty Forest after hearing a fairy tale by a Shroomling about two creatures who haunt the forest and throw out anyone who wanders in too far, "Mad Red Riding Hood" and the "Big Dark Wolf." An original fairy tale is the main focus, about a mother and daughter who were both poisoned by a wizard who wanted to take over their kingdom for himself. Characters in the plot and stories seen include Alice in Wonderland, Sleeping Beauty, The Three Little Pigs, Snow White, The Red Shoes, The Six Swans, and parts of the story, events, and plotline lean on events from Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, and Hansel and Gretel. The story turns out to be about one of the Titans of the past, Ritalli. She loved fairy tales and created creatures based on the local Esselings--but good—to protect the forest and help purify the Dark Miasma that infected the area after the Veilfall. Her first creation was the most advanced and she named her after her favorite tale, Red Riding Hood, and Red and the creatures see Ritalli as their mother. Ritalli was betrayed by another Titan she took in, Nikos. He poisoned her and her creations and killed Ritalli in the process, then attempted to make the creatures Ritalli created praise him as their creator to cover up Ritalli's existence and take the historical glory for himself. "Mad" Red Riding Hood refused to give in, and she and the Big Dark Wolf are two sides of the same person, the beast and the girl; Red has spent centuries trying to prevent Nikos from completely wiping the truth, creating a time loop by ruining "Grandma's" funeral before it can complete and kicking out anyone who comes into the forest from outside so they don't get caught in the loop. But the loops time frames before "Grandma's" funeral are getting shorter, and she fears that the truth and herself—and all the creatures Ritalli created—will be destroyed. With Nikki's help Red is finally able to come of age and claim the gift and inheritance Ritalli left for her, defeat Nikos' creation the Scavenger once and for all, and purify his influence over the forest and restore the name of her mother. Additionally, the special outfit for the season, "She is Wildfire," lets Nikki dress up as a glowed-up version of Red Riding Hood, who wields a gun and summons the Big Dark Wolf to fight Esselings alongside her.
- Fall Damage: Averted. Nikki never takes damage from falling, regardless of height or impact velocity; she doesn't have to be floating to land safely, and at most will make a grunt if she lands from a long fall. (Landing in deep water, on the other hand...)
- Fantastic Diet Requirement:
- Faewish Sprites consume Wishing Orbs as their primary source of nourishment. Wishes made by humans are collected by Faewish Sprites and turned into magical blobs that are categorized based on the wishes' contents as either Delicious, Bizarre, or Desperation and encased in color-coded shells made from either Sol Fruit or Stellar Fruit to turn them into Wishing Orbs. Delicious Wishing Orbs are encased in white Sol Fruit shells and are the only ones that Faewish Sprites should eat, while the other two are encased in blue Stellar Fruit shells- Bizarre Orbs are said to taste unpleasant, and are largely shipped out to a run-down location resembling a dump to be disposed of, and Desperation Orbs are known to make them ill or even cause madness. There's a restaurant that serves Delicious Wishing Orbs, complete with line cooks, dishwashers, and an owner who works to develop recipes for serving new flavors of Delicious Wishing Orbs.
- Pieceys are essentially reanimated pieces of fabric shaped like Bedsheet Ghosts, and will sometimes consume "detergent" for cosmetic and health purposes to improve the condition and strength of their fabric. Detergent comes in many varieties like any other drink, and certain forms can also have psychoactive effects and get Pieceys drunk or high. Being mostly incorporeal, there's no evidence that they're able to consume or would derive any benefit or pleasure from consuming any other forms of physical nourishment, much less anything a human or other mundane life form could safely eat.
- Fantastic Naming Convention:
- Faewish Sprites follow a rule that males have names ending in "-da" and females have names ending in "-bo". This extends to relationships, where they call each other "bo-friend" and "da-friend." The name rule is also lampshaded during the limited-time Fireworks Isle storyline with Scintilla (the semi-legendary Firework Sprite) who resembles a Faewish Sprite in his general appearance and sometimes disguises himself as one and going by the name Scintillada — which he made up on the spot when Nikki and Momo were skeptical of him just being named "Scintilla" while looking like a Faewish Sprite.
- Pieceys — ghosts made of clothing — are frequently named after various articles of clothing or fabrics, with many being named after the specific item of clothing they were born from. Many also have compound names that combine a descriptor with a noun or more normal name.
- The majority of Shroomlings have names that end in repeating final syllables, such as Abutata, Domibaba, Migugu, and Roucoco.
- Fantastic Racism: The Faewish Sprites and the Pieceys are magical races that both descend from the Wishing One, and they each blame the other for the deity's disappearance. Faewish Sprites believe the Pieceys stole the Aureum Vase, an important religious artifact belonging to the Wishing One, causing Him to die; meanwhile, the Pieceys believe the Faewish Sprites betrayed and murdered the Wishing One. The human-settled towns of Florawish and Stoneville sided with the Faewish Sprites and Pieceys, respectively, which has fed into the enmity between the two towns. Pieceys are rarely acknowledged in Florawish beyond a deep-seated belief that seeing one is "bad luck", but the racism against Faewish Sprites is really overt in Stoneville and the Abandoned District. Faewish Sprites can't even enter the Abandoned District without the Guards locking the entire area down until the Sprite is found and either cast out or imprisoned, Sprites are the villain in children's games in Stoneville, there are multiple Piecey-made murals glorifying violence against Sprites, and the local board game in the Stonewoods area is "Among Pieceys", a shell game where the object is to guess which Piecey is hiding a Sprite underneath it. In a Reunion Season side quest, some Pieceys, humans, and Faewish Sprites must work together to make a simple cart delivery and results in a large amount of squabbling when it goes awry. Despite Nikki exonerating the causes for their racism in the course of the Wishfield storyline, prejudices don't disappear overnight and both sides are struggling to unwind a millenia's worth of Fantastic Racism despite their best intentions.
- Fantasy-Forbidding Father: Akka Fedora is a farmboy from Wishfield who aspires to become a singer and songwriter. However his father, Old John, is vehemently against the idea, thinking that Akka's place in life is caring for sheep as is expected in the family. This comes to a head at the end of Akka's quest chain when he gets a semifinal invite for the Cicia Singing Contest Auditions, but Old John throws away the invitation. This bites Old John in the ass: Akka runs away from home to Cicia as a result. O Id John initially thinks Akka had retreated to his usual crying spot near the river, and is shocked when Nikki tells him that Akka ran away to a distant city, leaving his precious manuscripts behind. Talking to Old John after the questline is completed reveals that he regrets how he treated Akka and blames himself for what happened.
- Fantasy Pantheon: It's stated by Dada that other regions all have their own unique gods and beliefs, and regions with similar faiths in specific gods have grouped together into the seven nations.
- The Wishfield region is monotheistic and worships a deity known as the Wishing One. Religious practices across the region center around writing down one's wishes and leaving them for the Wishing One to find and potentially grant (in two various methods). It is said that the Wishing One created both the Faewish Sprites and the Pieceys and once actually granted people's wishes until He died long ago. His death forms the basis of a religious schism between Florawish (the Faewish Sprites' Wishing Woods in the east) and Stoneville (the Pieceys' Abandoned District in the west), as the two regions blame the other for the Wishing One's death. Florawish depicts the Wishing One as a masculine, humanoid figure dressed in a hooded, face-obscuring cloak, while the people of Stoneville believe that the Wishing One was reborn as the Silvergale, which is depicted as a large songbird with elaborate tail feathers. Furthemore, there are Faewish Sprites who believe that they are responsible for the Wishing One's death, as they gave Him a wish from the Loved One that was mistaken as a beautiful wish and harmed him.
- Itzaland, a region in the Terra Alliance west of Wishfield, features two distinct religions—the unnamed ancient Shroomling faith that venerates the Mothershroom, and Docilism, a human-originating faith which venerates the Titans—specifically the Titan King—and started three years prior when the Mothershroom mysteriously fell ill. Interestingly, human adherents of Docilism avoid associating with other humans and mostly interact with Shroomlings.
- The Wanxiang Realm introduces the Geomancer, a creator goddess who carved the deer goddess Chroma from a piece of jade and the Chromaface people from stone. The Geomancer left the Chromafaces in Chroma's care and entrusted Her to collect Wanxiang Power, a special magical energy emitted by living beings, in order to fight off the Dark. Chroma then broke apart Her body to form the Wangxian Realm for the Chromafaces. In years past, Lady Chroma used to appear before the Chromafaces at certain festivals and is regarded as something of a divine prophet or envoy between the people and the Geomancer.
- Fictional Holiday:
- Companion Day is a festival focused on people's strong bonds with their pets. The holiday was founded when a loyal Floof protected his master forty years ago during a conflict and died in the aftermath. The town honored its sacrifice, bravery and loyalty — first with the statue in Florawish and then with the festival, which is centered around the statue.
- The Wish Festival (released in the 1.1 update for New Year's 2025) is held during the time of the year where massive meteor showers fall as part of Shooting Star Season, held in observation of the victory against the Dark in the War of Heavens. Florawish residents decorate the town, clean their homes to prepare for the new year, give heartfelt handmade gifts, make wishes on the shooting stars (as wishes made then are believed to certainly come true), and observe the shooting stars from high platforms. The festival was also overlapped by Lucky Fishing Day, where rare Pink Ribbon Eels appear in Wishfield and can be caught.
- The New Bloom Festival (released in the 1.2 update for Lunar New Year 2025), is celebrated in the Linlang Empire, a Fantasy Counterpart Culture to China, and is the in-game equivalent to Lunar New Year. The holiday is celebrated with firecrackers and red decor intended to scare away bad luck, paper lanterns are hung, and people eat sticky rice cakes (niangao) and "fortune dumplings" (eaten during real-life Lunar New Year because they look like coin purses).
- Blue Tears Season involves the water and spaces around Wishfield glowing blue with shimmering light, and people coming to the waterside and openly showing their grief by weeping without restraint. This was caused by Sith the Serpent, who continuously mourned that she was obligated to Mercy Kill her close friend Alesiya after she became corrupted by the Dark.
- First Town: Florawish is the very first town that Nikki and Momo are sent to after arriving in Miraland. Unusually, it's the more urban of the two settlements in the Wishfield region, having a classical 18th/19th century European feel with cobblestone streets and stone architecture, and serves as a major hub area for the adventure in Wishfield. It's home to the Styling Guild, the biggest clothing shop in Wishfield, and services such as clothes recycling and Whimstar purchases (after the player reaches a certain Mira Level). A lot of the early storyline takes place there before it takes Nikki out into the rest of Wishfield.
- Fishing Minigame: Nikki can angle for fish, which are used to fashion new outfits. Somewhat unusually, fish are stored by total weight rather than as individual items. Additionally, Whimstars (or variants) may hide themselves as special shimmering fish that have to be angled for. Unlike many other examples, this game's fishing sequences are fairly simple and it's impossible to lose a fish on accident or due to poor playing unless the player deliberately exits the sequence with the Back button (and also confirms their exit in the resulting popup).
- Flashy Teleportation: Nikki's teleportation between Warp Spires has her and Momo disappear and reappear in a swirl of glittery light.
- Flavor Text: Just about everything you can collect, from crafting ingredients to outfits, has a description connected to it. In addition to fanciful descriptions, every single clothing piece and full outfit also includes commentary in the Outfit Compendium from two other characters offering their thoughts on it.
- Follow the Money: Various areas, including caves, contain Blings placed in trails to indicate where Nikki should go; this not only guides her through places such as caves but towards collectable items such as Whimstars, trunks, and Dews of Inspiration. The Starlit Pursuit challenges take this up to eleven by arranging Blings in the shape of arrows that point you towards the next cluster of Starlit Crystals.
- Foreshadowing: The two dresses stored in the attic that Momo suggests Nikki take with her for the graduation ball are the Bubbly Voyage and Wind Of Purity dresses. (Momo says that "Mommy" never let them used to come up to the attic when they lived there before.) Nikki also is entranced by a painting of the Wind of Purity full outfit before Momo bumps into the wardrobe containing the dress that teleports them to Miraland.
- Gambit Roulette: It's remarked by Momo that the Prophet's plan to maneuver Nikki into a position where she would learn about the danger to the Wish Collector, navigate the Piecey lands and solve problems he set along the way, obtain the Aureum Vase to protect it from him, then return to the Stonecrown where he could swoop in and steal it in the most dramatic manner possible was complicated enough that it could have failed completely at any single step. Spindle observes that the Prophet's plan would only have worked if his name is literal - if he has the gift of prophecy. As it turns out, this is zigzagged: the Prophet, Giovanni, does effectively have the ability to see the future due to having had his consciousness sent back in time by his wish on the Aureum Vase, meaning he already has knowledge of what's going to play out during the game's events... except for those involving Nikki, who wasn't present in the previous timeline, meaning anything he planned involving her would have required significant guesswork and luck on his part.
- Gameplay and Story Segregation:
- Characters in cutscenes will refer to Nikki as pink-haired even if the hairstyle she currently has on isn't pink. Same with Momo, characters will refer to his yellow cloak even if he's wearing something else. Skipping important story cutscenes will show a recap of Nikki looking like her original self in her region-specific main story attire, suggesting that no matter what customizations the player made, this is how Nikki canonically looks to the NPCs.
- During the tutorial level, Momo will comment that the purple corruption in Dews of Inspiration looks dangerous and that Nikki should avoid touching them without purifying them first. Unlike the Collision Damage that occurs if Nikki touches Esselings, absolutely nothing happens should the player come into contact with corrupted Dews.
- Cutscenes where Nikki uses the Floating outfit almost always show her flying higher and losing altitude more slowly than she does in gameplay, and cutscenes where she uses the Gliding outfit even have her fly upwards and gain altitude, which is not possible.
- A quest at the Leisureely Anglers between Sarmoni and Mitcheli will state that Nikki missed Lucky Fishing Day when activated after the event has passed, even if the player participated in Lucky Fishing Day.
- In version 2.0's main story, there is a stealth mission where Nikki must sneak past the guards to avoid being taken back to Spira to meet High Priestess Medael. Even if the player changed Nikki's appearance to be unrecognizable from the original, they will always recognize her as the "Saintess" if they see her and capture her, forcing her to sneak her way past.
- For a game that emphasizes fashion, it's very easy for players to cheat their way through Stylist Challenges with nonsensical outfits that award high Stylist points because the characters don't register what the player wears beyond how many points it awards and whether it matches the category, in-game tagging-wise. Worse, you can even beat the Sovereigns, aka the characters that are officially deemed the most fashionable Stylists of each region, with a thrown together outfit if it awards enough points.
- Game Within a Game: The Pear-Pal has a minigame called "Run, Pear-Pal" which is mainly used to change the time of day in-game. You play as the Pear-Pal mascot running through a 2D course while avoiding purple Esseling clouds (which cover half the screen in dark smog and slow the Pear-Pal down when hit), while you move faster if you collect a pear.
- Genuine Human Hide: The exclusive storyline for the v1.10 update is a whodunit mystery that leads towards a costume company called Threadstar which was discovered to be sewing pieces of dead Pieceys into their costumes and selling them to performers — even kidnapping, trafficking, and then murdering Pieceys for materials. This is a variation as Pieceys are essentially living pieces of fabric, so this is tantamount to making clothing out of chunks of someone's corpse, and they also targeted Pieceys known to be powerful Stylists. Fabric from even dead Pieceys is loaded with Whim and Stylist Pieceys have even more Whim in their fabrics, which made Threadstar's costumes powerful tools for stage performers who could use the Whim-soaked fabric to enthrall audiences and enhance their performances, but extended, direct contact with Piecey fabric drove people who wore them insane.
- Gentle Giant:
- Giant Shroomlings exist in Itzaland who will happily protect their people along with the Mothershroom itself.
- The Guardian Beast is a kind and protective Kaiju sized creature who will even allow Nikki and Momo to ride on its back after Nikki manages to purify it, this freeing it from the corruption.
- Ghost Memory: Pieceys are magically animated pieces of fabric that bear the memories of their organic owners, and if a Piecey has a fabric patch from another Piecey sewn onto their body, they might be able to access some of the memories and personality of that other Piecey. Scarlet the Seeker, a v1.10-exclusive character, is an extreme case- patches from dozens of Pieceys who died at the hands of Threadstar have been grafted onto her, which causes her to behave erratically from all of their conflicting memories and spirits influencing her. After she comes to her senses and Threadstar's agents are arrested, she meets with a Piecey doctor to have her patches removed and either laid to rest or returned to their next of kin, then replaced with fresh patches.
- Giant Flyer:
- The Sky Monarchs are giant pigeon-like creatures found scattered around Wishfield. If Nikki approaches one at its nest and uses her Grooming ability to clean it, the Sky Monarch will allow her to ride on its back while it flies a small circuit around the surrounding area. This allows Nikki to collect Whimstars (and variants) that are too high for her to reach otherwise. And like all of the other wildlife in this game, they're adorable, friendly, and make cute cooing noises.
- The Astral Swan (a beautiful white swan with vivid blue wing and crest feathers) is too small to carry any person larger than Momo but it's still a pretty big bird. It stands taller than Nikki and has a wingspan of at least 10 feet (or 3 meters) making it the size of the largest real-world swan species ever, the aptly named giant swan. Grooming it will allow Nikki to join it on a flight around the Abandoned District using her Floral Gliding outfit.
- Global Currency Exception: The Wanxiang Realm doesn't use Blings in any of their shops (even though they're present around the map); instead, they use Wanxiang Coin, which are small beads. These can be found via various tasks or earned through Mini Games in the realm, like the hotpot stand or Mahjong.
- Go Out with a Smile: The Stylist Battle with the Sovereign of Fresh, Master Eltinada, involves the Farewish ceremony of singing to transition a Faewish Sprite out of life to reunite with the Wishing One — in this instance, his father Bayida. At the end of a Perfect performance, Bayida will smile at Nikki and Eltinada before flying into the glowing light they've summoned and dissipating into rising light.
- Guide Dang It!: The v2.2 update adds the Wangxian Realm, which includes a Mahjong minigame with some unique rules. The problem is that the tutorials are very definitely aimed at a Chinese audience in that they literally only describe these unique rules and assume that players are already familiar with how to play regular 3- or 4-player Mahjong. On top of that, most Westerners' only familiarity with Mahjong is through Mahjong solitaire, whose only similarity to classical Mahjong is that they use the same tiles, making the two games as similar as solitaire and rummy just because both games are played with playing cards.
- Healing Factor: Inverted with the Pieceys, which are essentially living pieces of fabric animated by the wishes of their once-living owners. Pieceys cannot heal damage to their fabric bodies the way a biological life form can recover from a cut or other skin injury, and must work to avoid damage and maintain the strength of their fabrics. Sewing specialized fabric patches over top of rips and tears can help, but it only prolongs the inevitable, and if they use too many of them, they won't have enough of their original bodies' fabric and magic left to sustain themselves and will die. Their fabric can also wear out and become thinner with age, leaving them more susceptible to damage and less able to accept patches until their fabric eventually breaks down completely.
- Hearts Are Health: Nikki's health is represented by five crystalline hearts, which can expand slightly with various boosts.
- Helmets Are Hardly Heroic: The v2.2 update contains a free Ability Outfit called Nefarious Shadows, and the ensemble includes a pretty intimidating-looking black full-face mask with a grinning maw full of protruding sharp teeth and opaque white eyepieces. The outfit's ability dispels Esselings that have disguised themselves as ordinary objects, and the included mask is inspired by masks used in traditional Chinese mystic and shamanistic practices that were intentionally scary-looking to frighten away evil spirits. The outfit features prominently in the Attract Mode on the game's title screen, but the footage begins with Nikki removing the mask before the player can get a good look at it, and then she spends all other scenes with the mask nowhere in sight, so that the player can see her expressions as she browses the new area.
- Hidden Object Game: There's a few different minigames that require Nikki to locate hidden items.
- Photo Investigation Quests have a character ask Nikki to find something in a photograph they've taken. The player (and Nikki) examine the photograph to locate the specific item being asked about — lost pets, other characters, or even certain plants and bugs.
- One type of Whimstar starts as a glowing orb. Once Nikki touches it, it pulses light around the area, indicating there's a camouflaged star-shaped object in the vicinity, and once she finds it, the orb becomes a Whimstar. The "star" can have any appearance (e.g. a painted star in a wall mural, a star-shaped flower arrangement, a star detail on a signpost) but it will always have five points and appear in the highlighted area.
- Another kind of Whimstar puzzle introduced in Itzaland is a variation on the above with the glowing orb pulsing light around a circular area, except that the object is to locate six glowing shards of the Whimstar hidden somewhere around that area. Some of the shards are out in the open, while others require a bit of searching and may be tucked behind or under parts of the environment that can't be easily seen from every angle.
- High Priestess: Lady Medael is the High Priestess and ultimate authority over Docilism. She is in charge of the ceremony to heal the Mothershroom.
- Horned Humanoid: High ranking officials in Spira are known as Parksolians and are shown to have horns, along with other unique, dragon like features like slit pupils, pointed ears, and body decorations that resemble icy scales.
- Horse of a Different Color: In Itzaland, the primary mount is the snail, a gigantic, brightly colored, and adorable version, rigged up with two wicker-looking seats on each side of its shell. They don't move any faster than a walking human, but they can effortlessly climb surfaces too steep for Nikki to walk on, and even move on vertical walls and upside-down.
- Idle Animation: Left to herself without input, Nikki will glance at Momo, examine herself, sneeze, and stretch. Momo also has idle animations.
- Immortality Hurts: Pieceys can live for hundreds of years — potentially indefinitely — as long as they maintain their fabric bodies properly by avoiding tears and using detergents to clean and strengthen their fabrics.
- Inexplicable Treasure Chests: Treasure chests are scattered all around the overworld, containing currency and outfit sketches. At one point Nikki points out how weird it is that chests are all around for her to open and find.
- Instant Expert: One advantage of being a stylist appears to be that, depending on the outfit Nikki wears, she is granted instant knowledge related to that outfit's style in a magical version of clothing shifting the wearer's mindset. For example, the Electrician sketch gives Nikki the ability to repair things that even the residents of Miraland don't know how to fix, despite the fact that she has no apparent prior electrician knowledge, and the Violinist Outfit has her know instantly how to play a violin perfectly and skillfully.
- An Interior Designer Is You:
- As of v1.9, an island home for Nikki and Momo to live in has been made available separate from any other realm in Miraland — with the player having complete control over the interior design and building layout. Nikki can build furniture to decorate (including items found around Wishfield), grow and harvest plants, invite random animals to stay as visitors, hunt for meteorites, and grow and catch fish — using a unique outfit for each. Players can also visit other people's islands both friends and randomly.
- The design mechanic was expanded in v2.3 with the "Grow Big and Strong" series of quests, which has Nikki assisting with building and designing some new businesses and services for the Shroomlings, starting with a juice shop and a bathhouse, and then adding a snail spa and a Styling school in v2.4. Nikki can use a variation on the Construction ability introduced from the Home Island to craft furniture and decor sets for these businesses that can confer benefits that make them more profitable and enjoyable for clientele, as well as just crafting and placing furniture pieces to suit the player's fancy. The player can take their profits and use them to level up their businesses, unlocking more furniture blueprints and the ability to choose signage designs and accent colors for each business.
- iPhony: The main piece of tech used by the Stylist's Guild is the Pear-Pal, a magical tablet with a pear-shaped duck mascot.
- Item Crafting: Specifically, clothing and stylist-based crafting. The various bugs, fish, fur from grooming animals, and items gathered from exploring and purifying Esselings are used to make clothes and items from the design sketches Nikki gets.
- It's All My Fault: Ennio feels this way about the fate of the Lorelei Troupe. He was the fireworks designer of the troupe and one of the founders, but the fireworks he set off burned the theatre they were in down, killing all the other members except him. In his grief as the only survivor, he ended up bound with Dark Essence and used it to manufacture puppets to resemble the late members, creating the Evermelody Troupe and the Box Theatre.
- Land of Dragons:
- The Linlang Empire is one of the seven nations of Miraland, based on historical Chinese culture. So far the region is unseen, though people from the region have been seen in other locations. This included visitors from the nation to Wishfield on a large junk boat in the 1.2 season, Chinese Dragon-themed outfits, and the New Bloom Festival, an equivalent to Lunar New Year. Clothing with a distinct Chinese feel in the game is labeled "Linlang" in Nikki's wardrobe.
- Danqing Island (added as part of the v1.8 update) is a Chinese-style rural village where its people celebrate the Yin Yuan festival, a festival about bonds between people where they make and give each other gifts to celebrate the various bonds among themselves. Part of the celebration includes having a well-trained artist dot the eye of the Loong Dragon on a painting. The island is isolated, but still connected to Wishfield through Nikki accessing it via a painted scroll that showed up in the Sea of Stars. The island and its parallel painting-like realm came about after one of Nikki's many failures to save Miraland. She — as Artist Cat — was devastated at the loss of the world and so used her talents and Whim to paint a new world she created. She later died and gave her soul to Danqing to keep all she had created constantly reincarnating. The cycle started to collapse when Artist Cat's close friend and one of her first creations, Loong the Dragon, was too devastated after Artist Cat's death and lack of return to let herself reincarnate and instead stagnated the cycle as she kept constantly searching for Artist Cat to come back. Because of this, the Ink Pool in the Danqing Realm could not let the cycle continue, resulting in people and items caught in rainstorms to dissolve into ink and be stuck in the Danqing Realm waiting to reincarnate. After Nikki remembered her past life as Artist Cat, then soothed Loong and convinced her to reincarnate as Yue Bai by assuring her they would meet again, nothing goes missing in the rain anymore.
- Large and in Charge: Medael is the Docilist High Priestess who many in Spira see as the Big Good responsible for the ritual that will heal the Mothershroom (though she's much shadier than she appears to be on the surface) and absolutely towers over her subordinates.
- Last Lousy Point: Finding all of the Dews in any zone. Unlike Whimstars or its variants, there's no Momo radar for Dews and there are far more Dews than Whimstars. Plus their render distance is lower, they stand out much less, and acquired Dews aren't tracked on the in-game map. Luckily, less than half of all Dews of Inspiration are needed to unlock all three of Kilo's outfits, and 240 out of 261 Dews of Firework are needed to collect all rewards from Vita. To help alleviate this, an official interactive map was added by the devs to the Pear-fect Guides website as part of the mid-v1.2 update in February 2025 that accepts the player's save data and allows them to directly track their progress on many collectibles, including the Dews, chests, lore documents, and even crafting ingredients.
- Light Is Not Good: Medael wears white robes to signify her rank as a high ranking priestess of Docilism and is the true reason the Mothershroom has fallen ill.
- Little Red Fighting Hood: Season 2.4's special outfit. "She is Wildfire," lets Nikki dress up as a glowed-up version of Red Riding Hood similar to the outfit she wears when helping Red Riding Hood defeat Nikos; she wields a gun as her attack weapon and can summon the Big Dark Wolf (in the form of both a baby and full-grown Behemoth) to fight Esselings alongside her.
- Lore Codex: The Compendium started out as just a listing of Nikki's various outfits and clothing items, with Pink Diamonds given out as rewards for completing full outfits. The v1.2 update expanded it to include Lore (books and papers read in the world) and Momo's various cloaks, and the v1.4 update added the Creature Compendium, a pop-up style book listing of every kind of plant, animal, fish, insect, and Esseling found in the world, complete with descriptions about their behavior, habits, and other characteristics. The Esseling descriptions even include backstories about the apparel and accessories that they used to be and what caused them to become corrupted with Dark Essence.
- Love Imbues Life: This is how Pieceys (ghost-like creatures made of animated fabric) are born, being formed from clothing “soaked in strong wishes” from their owners. And those owners need not be human- Beanie was born from clothing created for a beloved Bowtie Cat who longed to reunite with her owner, who had to flee unexpectedly and left her behind. Because she was born from a cat's wish, she can only speak in meows and is treated as an outcast, despite having human-level intelligence like the other Pieceys- she designed a hat to commemorate an old friend of hers and gifts it to Nikki.
- Luck-Based Mission:
- Some of the Risky Photography sidequests require you to take in-game pictures of enemies performing highly specific actions, usually while you're under attack. Being damaged knocks you out of Photo Mode, and even on the most powerful devices, it can take several seconds to get back into Photo Mode, at which point the opportunity is long-gone.
- Any task that can only be performed during rain, such as the sidequest "Risky Photography: Bitey Bag"- which has Nikki being asked to take a picture of a Bitey Bag in the rain (that can't see her and so won't attack) -or attempting to gather Rainy Orchids and their associated Essence. Rain is completely random both in when (and how often) it comes and how long it lasts, meaning players may have to wait for several in-game hours to get the rain to come, and also hope that it rains long enough to either get the photo or even find any Orchids before the rain stops again. Also, just because it's raining in one part of the map doesn't mean it's raining everywhere on the map, so the player can't just go somewhere else and then warp back to the area where the Bitey Bag or the Orchids are when it starts raining. Using "Dig, Pear-Pal" to gather Rainy Orchids is an alternative way to gather the actual flowers, but it's not possible to collect Rainy Orchid Essence through this method, which is needed to craft certain outfits.
- Magic by Any Other Name: Magic in Miraland is known as "Whim", and mages, who were once called Whimancers, are now known as Stylists, who hone their Whim in the form of enchanted objects such as Ability Outfits, which confer special abilities when worn, or Whimtech, such as Whimcycles or the Pear-Pal tablets.
- Magical Accessory: Eurekas, which are glowing translucent decorations that can be placed around the head like a halo, on both hands, and around both feet. Besides their aesthetic effects, they also provide bonus scores during Styling Contests.
- Magic Cauldron: The Stirring Sweet Dreams
item is a pink fairy cauldron that Nikki can interact with; when stirring it'll make colorful glitterly potions and also has a chance for Nikki to mess up and make a mess. It's all just for aesthetics. - Martial Beret: The Volunteer Corps (made up of Pieceys) all wear red berets with the Silvergale logo on the front to indicate their position as the protective military force of the Abandoned District.
- Metal Slime: Greedy Pouches are Esselings that will run away if they spot you and take a few hits to defeat. Purifying them drops lots of Blings.
- Metamorphosis: Faewish Sprites are born in what is essentially an immature larval stage where they're nothing more than an immobile blue fuzzy sphere with closed eyes, no limbs, and no distinguishing sex characteristics; they are stuck at the developmental equivalent of a pre-crawling, barely speaking, months-old infant, or a days-old kitten or puppy. Furthermore, Faewish infants are not able to grow past this stage without external assistance from the blooming of Aurosa flowers and are changed during the Coming Of Age ceremony held in the sole meadow where they grow, which only happens every two hundred years. At the start of the plot, the actions of the Big Bad Lord Chigda have prevented the Aurosa from blooming for the last several years, leaving every Faewish infant born since then stuck at their early stage and requiring round the clock care from their parents this entire time. Once the Aurosa start blooming again after the Big Bad is defeated, the ceremony is held and the infants spontaneously metamorphose in seconds from that larval stage into mature, fully dressed Faewish Sprites in the pollen of the Aurosa flowers; they then receive their names from their parents and no longer need to be cared for and can be independent, and in this case are apparently no worse for wear in any respect despite their lengthy developmental delay.
- Modesty Shorts: When using the Bubbly Voyage as the floating dress, Nikki wears a set of blue bloomers underneath that come down to mid-thigh and are visible as the skirt floats around her. She also has slim white shorts under her purification outfit, Wind of Purity, and they're visible undernealth her archery outfit
- Mushroom Man: Shroomings in Itzaland are a race of mushroom people, who are all born via spores shed from the Mothershroom (but still form family connections with each other). While the children wear short diaper-like clothing, mature Shroomlings wear only accessories (such as jewelry, arm and/or leg bands, ponchos and capes, flowers on the shroomcap, etc.) with no bottoms or tops; they also adorn their bodies and faces with paint swirls.
- Never Grew Up: Two of the endings in the Behemoth Guardian Project can result in the Behemoth Fawnling never maturing into an adult, if its stats are low enough.
- Nice Girl: Nikki is a kind and nice girl by default. The player has the option of making her somewhat insensitive by selecting certain dialogue options, but Momo will suggest those responses are out of character for her. She gets rightfully upset with people's cruel actions.
- Nobility Hennin: The 1.6 Playful Hearts Day update added the Whispers of Dream
item, which is a hennin with a long veil and a star on top. It's part of the full Enchanted Encounter
outfit, which makes Nikki look like a noble, strong fairy and lets her groom animals with a wave of a fairy wand. To match, Momo has a Veil Cloak that gives him a double hennin that covers his ears. The artwork of Lulukko in her fairy form also shows her wearing a double hennin. - Our Fairies Are Different: This game has several fairy-like races and beings, all of which are of the cutesy and (largely) friendly variety.
- The Faewish Sprites are a sprite-like magical race said to have been directly created by the now-dead local deity. They're humanoid, but they have Super-Deformed proportions with rounded heads the size of the entire rest of their bodies, stubby limbs evoking an infant, indigo-colored skin with shimmery undertones, silvery-white hair, feathery-looking ears, and large, shimmering eyes with constellations in them. They're all dressed in cloaks and get around by flying and levitating with magic. They collect and eat wishes made by humans that form into orbs, and certain kinds of "bad" wishes, which are supposed to be treated like toxic waste and disposed of, can make them extremely sick or even drive them insane.
- The people of the Twinmoon Kingdom, which is described as a "long-lived fairy realm devoted to knowledge and nature", look like diminutive humans with the height and proportions of children even when fully grown, and they have insectoid fairy wings on their backs with Pointy Ears. All Twinmooners who have been seen thus far as of v2.0 are women. Alison appears during limited-time events and trades items for Resonance Crystals and Glitter Bubbles. Timis runs a cosmetics R&D lab in the Wishing Woods that employs Faewish Sprites, and she gets irritated with humans who dismiss her for her appearance and don't take her seriously as an accomplished businesswoman. Lumira lives in the Eldershroom Woods in Itzaland, where she experiments with Esselings and uses her talents to tell fortunes and find lost things for the Shroomlings. Alison also mentions a grandfather, implying that there are males.
- The Fufus are a mysterious cutesy humanoid race with a deep, instinctual understanding of Whim who were driven out of their equally mysterious home, the Old Furolo Forest, by Esselings. The five who reside in the Realm of Nourishment, a magical plane "flowing with abundant Whim [magic]" created for them by the Stylists' Guild, appear to be the among the only Fufus left. As thanks, they allow Stylists to visit and trade crafting materials to them in exchange for Insight, which is needed to unlock new abilities and special outfits. They have similar diminutive proportions to Twinmooners, but they look less human and more like Cute Monster Girls (except with Ambiguous Genders) with teardrop-shaped bodies and three-clawed paws, and all of them are only referred to by epithets, such as "Fear Fufu" or "Angry Fufu", after the sole emotion each one shows. When they first meet Nikki, they sense her powerful Whim and decide that she must also be a Fufu refugee, and are unable to be convinced otherwise.
- Our Monsters Are Weird: All of the non-boss enemies in this game are Esselings, old pieces of clothing and fabric corrupted and animated by Dark Essence. The player defeats them using a Purification outfit or Archery that purges their Dark energy, leaving them inert again and allowing Nikki to collect the old fabric and use it to craft new clothing pieces. Several of them just look like fabric sacks and hobble around on the corners of their sacks, the Octopacks look like cylindrical leather bags standing on end with their bottom edges cut into eight flaps (hence the "octo" part), the Bitey Bags and Trap Sharks are basically levitating leather clutch purses whose straps and flaps resemble fins, and Sssacks are snake-inspired with a paper bag for a head and two ribbons spilling out of the bag's opening to form its serpentine body. And basically all of them have funny little angry faces when they attack you and make adorable little noises that make them difficult to take seriously as a threat.
- Palette Swap:
- Crafting or Resonating duplicate outfits will allow you to enable palette swapping. Beyond merely changing color, some outfits also change patterns or shape. Alternate outfits are still stamina-gated since they require limited crafting items which drop from a weekly boss.
- The player also has the ability to dye almost any part of an outfit, allowing them to match pieces that otherwise wouldn't fit together.
- Paper People: Introduced in v1.5, the Giftys are a mysterious, adorable race of stylized yellow chick-like creatures with bodies "as thin as cicada wings" that allow them to slide between blades of grass or stick to surfaces. For the next five updates, players were challenged to find 6-8 of them scattered around the event area and stuck to various walls and other surfaces so that they could return home. In v1.5, this was tricky, as they would blend in with the murals scattered around the event area, Serenity Island, but later updates would add thick white outlines around them to make them easier to see, and they also hummed and made noises.
- Penny-Pinching Crab: The Greedy Pouch is a variety of Piñata Enemy that appears to be made out of an old, enlarged coin purse, stylized to resemble a hermit crab. The kiss-lock clasp at the top of its coin purse body is stylized to look like eyestalks, and it runs around on little jointed arthropod-style legs while carrying a giant sack of Blings on its back, evoking a hermit crab's shell. Its Creature Compendium entry states that when it was still just a coin purse, it would feel happy when stuffed full with its owner's Blings, and the Dark Essence's corruption twisted this desire into an insatiable greed.
- Le Parkour: Nikki (with help from her floating outfit) can bounce around on various structures, buildings, and natural elements all around Miraland. The quest "Jump! Jump Now!" has the owner of the Daisy Inn, Mr. Klay, complain that someone is disturbing the inn experience by jumping around the inn and catching guest attention — but later withdraws his complaint after Nikki helps him fetch a book he lost on top of a building and calls her the Jumping Heroine of Florawish.
- Multi-Stage Battle:To purify the Corrupted Guardian Beast in Itzaland, Nikki must first leap from platform to platform high above Spira all while dodging attacks, firing arrows at it in return. Then it chases her across the terrain, launching more energy blasts. Finally, Nikki must duel with it in the sky, assisted by Wilhelm's giant bird.
- People Puppets:
- The Sovereign of Elegance competes with Nikki in their Style Duel by dancing her around like a puppet.
- At the end of the first time through the Palace Ruins Underground during Eerie season, Nikki will be dragged in and dance up to Queen Philomia while wearing the Timeless Melody outfit. It's implied that it's Queen Philomia herself that's doing it using telekinesis.
- The Box Theatre and Evermelody Troupe are initially believed to be controlled by their organizer Ennio; every performance they do is exactly the same, with no changes or variations, and Nikki's interaction with any of the members inside the Box Theater has them repeating the same lines without acknowledging her presence. The truth is Ennio created puppets that resembled the late members of the Lorelei Troupe using Dark Essence in his grief, after he was the only survivor of a fire that killed the other members. As automatons the troupe could only perform the same actions over and over, similar to a music box. After Nikki performs in the Box Theatre herself with them and touches Ennio's heart, Ennio recants and leaves the Box Theatre and its puppets behind permanently.
- Photo Mode: Infinity Nikki comes with a sophisticated photo mode replete with options, including highly customizable settings for lighting and posing. It can be upgraded by completing sidequests.
- Play Every Day: There are Daily Wishes, which give you a randomized lists of tasks to complete for diamonds and materials. Thankfully, you don't have to complete every wish to get all of that day's rewards. v1.5 adds the Starlit Moments, basically a version of Daily Wishes that can be performed in the Sea of Stars area in exchange for Starlit Crystals, which are used to purchase exclusive Photo Mode poses, props, and a rotating monthly set of poses and outfit pieces in the Starlit Shop.
- Precious Puppy: Floofs are Pomeranian-esque creatures with orange and cream coats that can be found wandering around human-populated areas. Like any adorable little dog, they will happily greet Nikki when she approaches and will play and cuddle with her while she Grooms them, and they'll occasionally even photobomb Photo Mode pictures if they happen to be nearby. Using the Midnight Vigil outfit lets Nikki march, and any Floof she's groomed will don a marching band hat and follow her. Itzaland contains a variant called the Terra Floof, which looks and behaves identically save for having black and tan coats that allegedly never get dirty no matter how much they roll and play in the grass.
- Premium Currency: This game has two premium currencies that can be purchased with real money. The primary one is the Diamond (pink icosahedron), which is primarily used to purchase Resonite and Revelation Crystals that can then be used to pull on limited or permanent outfit banners, or "pulls" in gacha terms, but can also be spent on Vital Energy refills. The other one is Stellarite (pale blue stellated icosahedron), which can be used to directly purchase certain premium outfits and other items in the Shop, and can also be converted into Diamonds. With that said, the game has been praised for being rather generous with giving players free Diamonds- 90 Diamonds can be earned daily for completing the Daily Wishes, and Diamonds are also awarded in smaller amounts throughout regular gameplay for completing quests, opening chests, earning Advanced Courses achievements, crafting clothing pieces and Eurekas, fully Glowing Up outfits, and Evolving outfits. They're also handed out in larger quantities with every limited event, through various limited-time redemption codes posted on the developer's official social media, and even as compensation for things like survey completion and server maintenance downtime, provided the player logs in within a certain time frame following the maintenance.
- Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: The Abandoned District arc has Nikki — a human — and Momo — an anthro cat — work with Raggy, a Piecey who is a literal animated rag-ghost. They later include Giroda, an outcast Faewish Sprite that hopes to be a knight, and they form a group that go to the Stonetree. Nikki continues to work with Giroda in the Wishing Woods.
- Rainbow Pimp Gear: Styling contests are scored solely on the point value of the items being worn rather than any subjective aesthetics, meaning a potential winning combination of clothing, hair, and accessories may clash horribly (or clip through each other).
- Raising Sim: The 2.1 update added the Behemoth Guardian Project, which lets Nikki raise a Behemoth fawnling for sixteen months (cycles) at the Warmfur Home in Itzaland. Nikki can influence the Behemoth's four stats of Intelligence, Strength, Curiosity, and Emotion with various toys, rest, and a monthly schedule of events, along with some random events. The final stats at maturity will determine the Behemoth's adult fate; afterwards, the adult can be interacted with in the world when summoned and also bring another fawnling for Nikki to raise.
- Regenerating Health: If Nikki hasn't lost any health in a while and is out of combat, her health will slowly regenerate to full.
- Reincarnation: Pieceys are considered to be reincarnations of clothing by the former owners of it, to the point their past lives are directly relevant to both themselves and the investigation Nikki is conducting. This was alluded to by Joia in 1.0's Challenge line of side quests: when despairing over not being able to progress through the Ripple Estate, she theorizes that perhaps she'll be reincarnated as Piecey and would then be able to simply float across, and it was further highlighted in the Golden Season.
- The Reveal: The Prophet is revealed to be Giovanni, who manipulated various characters as part of a gambit to Screw Destiny.
- Rewards Pass: Mira Journey is Infinity Nikki's version of the season pass, where you can level it up by completing various tasks, claiming rewards along the way. It contains a free Journey Overture track and a paid Distant Anthem track, which contains some exclusive items including cloaks for Momo to wear.
- Running Gag: Momo's obsession with BBQ; he brings it up continuously, even stating when Nikki catches rare fish that they're shiner than BBQ. (In Japan his favorite food is yakiniku/grilled meat, in China it's wuhuarou/braised pork belly, and in Spain it's bacon.)
- Rhythm Game: In v1.9 as part of the Music Festival, a piano in Florawish and the Kitty Dance machines in the Sea of Stars are available which are a four-button rhythm game and using many of the same songs. The Kitty Dance Machines are permanent.
- Savage Wolves: Subverted with the Nightglow Wolves of Itzaland. They're one of the very, very few groomable animals in the game that appears to display aggression towards Nikki, in that they growl and snap at her when she goes to groom them, but it becomes clear that they're actually just afraid. Once they realize that Nikki means them no harm, they cautiously allow her to brush them, realize that it feels really good, and even show her their bellies by the end like a happy dog, a major sign of trust for any wild animal.
- Sequence Breaking: The game will neither chastise nor prevent you from exploring beyond your main story quest progression point; there are very few barriers keeping you out of an area. However, certain areas like the Abandoned District and the Wishing Woods are gated by the use of Ability Outfits, which are in turn gated by story progression. In Itzaland, the only part of the map that's locked at the start is Spira, because it can only be reached by riding a snail mount, and Nikki's personal snail mount Whirly isn't recovered from its illness until a certain (still rather early) point in the story.
- Sequential Boss: The climactic duel against the corrupted Whirls is a Multi-Stage Battle which takes Nikki from fighting it atop multiple floating platforms to running away from it across the ground to battling it once more in the sky.
- Shout-Out:
- The Flavor Text on the Shadowless Corner gloves states that a Croaker was "immersed in my masterpiece [...] until I took a pink bubble to the knee!"
- "Help, I've Turned Into a Maskwing" is a short bit of lore found in the world that resembles The Metamorphosis.
- Domilada's musical piece (inspired by Foodie Bees) is called "Flight of the Foodie-Bee."
- During a conflict between Samiur and Aurore — two musicians — when Samuir insults Nikki interrupting by saying she's not a professional musician, Aurore says "As Mr. Rum-tum-tugger said, 'watch your words.'"
- Sins of Our Fathers: Giroda is shunned and abused by the other Faewish Sprites in the Wishing Woods due to his grandfather allegedly being responsible for losing their sacred artifact, the Aureum Vase. His grandfather actually helped defend it with Huerta.
- Spanner in the Works: Nikki unwittingly serves as one on behalf of the Prophet, a.k.a. Giovanni, allowing her to foil Chigda's plan to ascend as the new Wishing One.
- Starter Equipment: Or starter outfit, in this case — Nikki's default look with the pink dress. She will switch to it if your current outfit is incompatible with riding a Whimcycle (such as being an elaborate dress).
- Star-Shaped Coupon: Nikki's Heart of Infinity has its internal nodes unlocked using Whimstars, which are found in various places all around Miraland. She has to have a certain amount to unlock and increase her skills, unlock ability outfits, and eventually unlock the designs for Miracle Outfits.
- Statuesque Stunner: Lady Medael is an inhumanly beautiful Parksolian woman who stands at least a head taller than Nikki.
- Stealth-Based Mission:
- The Swordsmith Ruins dungeon and surrounding areas are guarded by ancient Iron Squirrel Knight statues that shoot intruders with a rather slow-moving laser beam that puts them to sleep, causing Nikki/Momo to wake up back at the last checkpoint. The statues cannot be disabled or destroyed, and the only way to guard against them is to stay out of sight from behind cover and not activate the statues at all. To make it even more difficult, if the player has been sighted and the laser beam has fired, the statue will track the player and the entire beam will move along with it, and the beam will even pass straight through solid objects such as walls, preventing the player from simply running past the statues and dodging the beam. Only a couple of these statues must be encountered inside the dungeon to complete the main story, but the surrounding ruins have way more of them, all of which must be passed in order to gather Whimstars, Dews of Inspiration, and chests for 100% Completion.
- Three stealth missions feature in the main storyline of Itzaland. The very first one has Nikki quell a Behemoth by hiding from the Behemoth's view in tall grass until she can angle herself behind it and knock it out with a well-placed roar, a process that she can make use of when dealing with the many Behemoths wandering Itzaland. The next two involve evading the Docilists; first, she escapes Shell Island avoiding various Docilist priests that want to return her to Spira for the Healing Ceremony, and if she's caught (or attempts to avoid them by going out of bounds) she will have to start again from a nearby checkpoint. The second one is an entire dungeon, the Shiny Vault, which has her avoiding tripwires in the form of strings of treasures that will jingle and alert the Docilist guards to an intruder if she touches them.
- Sudden Name Change:
- Momo, who in prior games had the Trademark Favorite Food of "grilled fish"note , now instead prefers "BBQ."
- The seven kingdoms of Miraland have been renamed completely. The starting region, Heartcraft Kingdom, is a parallel to Lilith Kingdom, even having the cities of Cecia and Wintermount. The other nations have been named in the Worldview trailer
as Empire of Light, Terra Alliance, Starhail Federation, Linlang Empire, Twinmoon Kingdom, and Whale Port. After completing the Wishful Aurosa outfit, Dada will tell Nikki about the seven kingdoms herself. The Empire of Light has been mentioned to be invading nearby Umbraso which is next door to Wishfield, and as of 2.0 the Terra Alliance has been opened to explore, starting with Itzaland. Tan Youyou is from the Linlang Empire and the New Bloom Festival involves a boat that traveled from the Linlang kingdom and is docked in Florawish during the festival; Danqing Island and the Wangxiang Realm also have Linglang Island styles. Timis, Alison the traveling merchant, and Lumira are from the Twinmoon Kingdom. - The recurring outfit Star Sea from the previous games Love Nikki - Dress Up Queen and Shining Nikki is now called Sea of Stars.
- Super Drowning Skills: Nikki cannonically doesn't know how to swim. Falling into any body of water deeper than Nikki's chest will have her immediately vanish and lose 1 of her 5 hearts before she reappears on the last solid ground she stood on. She can wade up to that height and run easily through the shallows, so it's not an instant death based on touching water. On the bright side, all Esselings that can't fly will also drown if they fall into water, and in Itzaland, Nikki is able to use the Gigantification Ability Outfit to wade into much deeper water than if she were normal-sized, and cross most bodies of water in the region with ease.
- Supernatural Gold Eyes: High Priestess Medael is a Parksolian - a draconic humanoid - possessing golden eyes akin to that of a lizard.
- Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: In the "New Bloom Festival" event, Master Du is in Florawish looking to meet a descendant of a man named "Mark", who saved her ancestor Du Qingchuan from a dire situation and left him a paper crane before returning home to restore Florawish after it got wrecked in a storm. She and Nikki find out there are three civilians whose ancestors were named "Mark", so they go around finding them to hopefully return the paper crane. By the end of it, it turns out that none of their ancestors fit the description as while all three were involved in Florawish's history, two never studied outside of Florawish while the third did and is set up to miraculously be the actual "Mark" they're looking for, he only lived to 39 and wasn't noted to have even met Du Qingchuan, making it very likely that the one they're looking for simply got lost to history.
- Sure, Let's Go with That: In both Danqing Island and Itzaland, Nikki and Momo have arrived and immediately been mistaken for being native to the area and/or given titles of importance that imply they've been there for a long time, with Momo being treated as Nikki's important companion. The two often have an aside where they agree to simply play along to figure out what's going on. Because the Nikki that we play as has a slightly different personality from the person that she's been mistaken for, this leads to her serving as a Spanner in the Works as she digs into plotlines in ways that others weren't expecting of her. In the case of Danqing Island, Nikki had been there before and created the world during one of her many attempts to save Miraland, and she later remembers her past life as Artist Cat.
- Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Alison, the Twinmoon native who shows up as a Travel Shop all around Miraland to do limited item trades with Nikki each season, can't access the Sea of Stars or Danquin Island; the first in game is an overlapping area where all versions of Nikki past and present can interact (and out of 'verse is the multiplayer section) and Danqing Island is an isolated realm created by Artist Cat, one of Nikki's past lives. So she's replaced in each area: Alifty (which combines "Alison" and "Gifty") who runs the Box Shop in the Sea of Stars, and Ai Lili (which is a variation on the name "Alison") who runs the Shop of Abundance in the in Danqing Realm.
- Temporary Platform: Itzaland contains a unique variation- giant plants based on the Mimosa pudica, whose leaves fold up when touched, can be found dotted around the forest. When Nikki climbs up their leaves, she has about a second to jump to safety before it closes up under her feet, knocking her off. The leaves will reopen after a few more seconds.
- Tragic Monster: Becoming corrupted after an encounter with Lady Medael and cut off from the rest of Itzaland, Guardian Beast Whirls has been in excruciating pain ever since and is even forced to attack Nikki when she arrives to set it free. Luckily, she is able to purify it, restoring it to its peaceful state.
- Trapped in Another World: Nikki and Momo are forcefully transported to Miraland after coming into contact with a magical dress found in her home's attic. They quickly adjust to their new temporary home, as Nikki finds the new world much more fun (and she has been there in prior games, though not this particular version of Miraland).
- Virtual Paper Doll: As the next iteration of a mobile dress-up game series, Infinity Nikki employs a gacha system focused solely on unlocking new clothing and makeup options for Nikki, which the player can mix and match. Momo can also wear different cloaks that are unlocked through the game.
- Vomit Discretion Shot: On the way into the Boneyard via boat with Nikki, Momo looks ill from the rocking and then puts his hand over his mouth and leans over the side before the sounds of gagging are heard.
- Warm-Up Boss: The Ebony Scissors are a styling faction that introduce Nikki and the player to Styling Contests, which are used frequently throughout Miraland. Nikki will have to battle all the factions of Wishfield and the Sovereigns of four different styles to get the materials needed to craft the Wishful Aurosa dress.
- Weather Gameplay Mechanic: The Sunny and Rainy Orchids in Wishfield—collectively called the Weather Orchids—are the same plant, but affected by the weather; Rainy Orchids (and their essence) can only be gathered during rain, and both are necessary for clothes crafting. Rain is unpredictable and can't be summoned automatically or chased, but changing the time on the Pear-Pal may cause it to rain.
- Well-Intentioned Extremist: Despite being accused by Nikki of causing the Mothershroom's illness and the Guardian Beast's corruption all while using Docilism to manipulate the Shroomlings for her own gain, Medael firmly insists that she did everything to heal the Mothershroom and assist her, though this may have simply been her attempt at convincing the Shroomling audience that all her actions were for a good cause.
- What the Hell, Hero?: Momo will occasionally call Nikki out if the player selects a slightly rude dialogue option.
- Wind Is Green: The Wind of Purity outfit is green themed and based around feathers and air. Nikki's purification orbs are also green arcs of wind and orbs, and this is regardless of what outfit or color scheme she's using with it.
- You Don't Look Like You: Nikki's appearance as in previous games, is almost completely customizable. The player is able to change her hair color and length, eye color, and even skin color to the point where she can end up being virtually unrecognizable as the pink-haired girl in the main ads for the game. The look will also apply in cutscenes, meaning other characters will still refer to Nikki as the "pink-haired girl" even if she has another hair color.
