Ensemble Girls! (Video Game)
Let's Make Ensemble!

Ensemble Girls! was a Japanese touch-and-go card collecting game created by Happy Elements and the predecessor series to Ensemble Stars!. Unlike it’s successor, Ensemble Girls! never got an English release.

The story is very similar to the original Ensemble Stars!, taking place in a high school setting. The player is a second-year student who transferred to Kimisaki Private Academy as the only male student. He is tasked by the Student Council President Himari Tsurumi to solve problems and help out with the school’s various clubs and committees.

In 2016, Ensemble Girls! received an Updated Re-release as Ensemble Girls!! which added updated character art, voice acting, and Live2D models. The game officially shut down on February 15th 2018 but stories can still be read through the Ensemble Girls!! ~Memories~ app.

While the game can no longer be played, its legacy lives on with the game’s cast serving as inspiration for a majority of the Ensemble Stars! cast.

Tropes in this game include:

  • all lowercase letters: The school idol group merry-melody is always written in lowercase.
  • All for Nothing: Azusa Kobato enrolled to Kimisaki so she can be near the person she admired, being Anzu. When Anzu got expelled from Kimisaki before Azusa could do so, Azusa realized she transferred for nothing.
  • Ambiguous Gender: Does not apply to any of the girls themselves but Yuyu Kinoshita's stuffed sheep Daniel uses he/him pronouns in fan translations and is modeled off of a ram (a male sheep). But Yuyu calls him a girl and corrects others when they call him a boy.
  • Athletically Challenged: Azusa is so unathletic to the point where she can't do any sports, including tennis despite being in the tennis club.
  • Cast Herd: Similar to how Ensemble Stars!! sorts it's characters by units and agencies, Ensemble Girls!! sorts its characters by classrooms, clubs and committees (though Ensemble Stars! used to sort their characters by classrooms until the EnStars!! Updated Re-release as some of the cast has since graduated high school).
  • Childhood Friends: This game has a few:
    • The Protagonist and Natsumi Minami are neighbors. It eventually becomes a Childhood Friend Romance.
    • Kana Umezono and Maria Yumeji live right next to each other.
    • Mitsuru Yomo is good friends with Reika Enjouji.
    • Ruri is friends with Hotori but their dwindling friendship is what caused Ruri to start the time loop to rekindle their friendship.
    • Misaki and Kairi have known each other since they were kids and call each other nicknames with the "-chan" honorific.
    • Downplayed with Seira and Suzu who have known each other since middle school, not elementary.
  • Child Soldiers: Tsubasa Hamori was raised in an idol military camp. She even keeps several assault rifles in her apartment.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Nana Harukaze is dubbed "the class weirdo" by her classmates.
  • Company Cross-References: Episode 10 of the Last Period anime shows Natsumi Minami and Himari Tsurumi as cameo characters alongside Trickstar, UNDEAD, Tori Himemiya, and Jin Sagami from Ensemble Stars! as well as Yuu, Merc, and Toto from Merc Storia. All games listed are owned by Happy Elements. Ensemble Girls! also had two collaborations within the Merc Storia app.
  • Continuity Nod: Oh boy. There are a lot of nods between this game and Ensemble Stars!:
    • EnGirls! takes place around the same time as the EnStars!! Updated Re-release.
    • The Protagonist used to attend Yumenosaki Academy but transfers to Kimisaki Academy in this game.
    • The Protagonist and Anzu are step siblings.
    • Ruka Tsukinaga is Leo Tsukinaga's younger sister.
    • Leo's Catchphrase "Ucchuu~!" may have originally been "Daiuchuu!" which is Ruri Amamiya's catchphrase.
    • Suzu Kuromori is Mika Kagehira's long lost brother as they were Separated at Birth. The two meet in the Milky Way event story in EnStars!.
    • Chizuru Yakumo is implied to be the narrator of the EnStars! Light Novel Crosstalk and visits Yumenosaki to help cheer Trickstar on in their duel against Knights. She also meets Shu Itsuki and Mika Kagehira.
    • Hajime Kodama's family shrine serves as the setting for the First Shrine Visit and First Dreams 2 Scout stories in EnStars!. It's also implied (but not confirmed) that her distant ancestors may have some connection with Kanata Shinkai's family since both Hajime and Kanata are worshipped as living gods despite being humans.
    • On a darker note, Anzu was forced to transfer to Yumenosaki at the beginning of EnStars! after her revolution at Kimisaki failed because of the actions of Reika Enjouji. She then proceeds to help Trickstar with their revolution against Yumenosaki's Absurdly Powerful Student Council.
  • Darker and Edgier: While Ensemble Stars! is clearly much darker than Ensemble Girls!!, this game is no stranger to referencing sensitive topics such as suicide, physical assault, murder, blood, death, severe bullying, child neglect, dysfunctional families, prostitution, and even molestation. Anzu herself is also taken much more seriously in this game, up to Knight of Cerebus levels.
  • Delicate and Sickly: Seira Sone has always had a weak body since she was young and was hospitalized for most of her life because of it. She even freaks out just by hearing the word "hospital".
  • Featureless Protagonist: Unlike Anzu who clearly has a physical appearance (mostly due to the Ensemble Stars! anime), the Protagonist doesn't have his full appearance shown. Only his arms are shown in various CGs but he is described as looking very similar to his sister.
  • Girls Love Stuffed Animals: Yuyu Kinoshita carries a stuffed sheep named Daniel ever since she was young and is upset if she loses him. Her hobby is also collecting stuffed animals.
  • Gratuitous English: Yako spent most of her childhood living overseas and thus tends to sprinkle English words in her dialogue.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Ruka wants to be the most important person in Suzu's heart, so she pushes away the Protagonist (whom Suzu is fond of because he's Anzu's brother). She's also envious of Anzu, but is too meek to say anything about it. At the end of the series Ruka finds out about Suzu's past and realizes why she's so attached to Anzu, but still doesn't like her.
  • "Groundhog Day" Loop: The game's story actually takes place in a time loop in which the school year replays over and over. Ruri Amamiya started the loop to reignite her fading friendship with Hotori Kannazuki and the cast can only break free from the loop once they face their biggest regrets.
  • Idol Singer: While the game's story doesn't heavily revolve around this trope (unlike it's successor), there is an idol group in the school called "merry-melody" which consists of Tsubasa Hamori and Kotori Kanon (though sometimes Misaki joins in too). Tsubasa in particular was raised in an idol training military facility.
  • Improbably Female Cast: The only male character shown in the game is the Protagonist.
  • In-Series Nickname: Before Ensemble Stars! was released, Anzu was often called "Angie" by Yako Konan.
  • Irony: The student council was (initially) the biggest enemy in the main story of Ensemble Stars!. In this game, the student council is the biggest ally, with the Student Council President Himari trying to make school life better for everyone.
    • Similarly, the revolution that occurred in the school year prior to Ensemble Stars! was started by Eichi to raise standards in Yumenosaki because it was in shambles and the students were all Lazy Bums. In this game, a revolution was started by Anzu to lower the standards in Kimisaki due to it's strict environment.
  • Mascot: Himari Tsurumi is the face of the game, even appearing on the app icon after it's shutdown.
  • Meaningful Name: Kimisaki Academy's name translates to "a school where you bloom".
  • Mistaken Identity: Ruri sometimes mistakes the Protagonist for his older step-sister, Anzu.
  • My Greatest Failure:
    • Anzu blames herself for the failed rebellion at Kimisaki according to the "Crosstalk" Light Novel. Not only do the teachers encourage the students to bully Anzu in order to force her to leave Kimisaki, she blames herself for leaving her friends behind after transferring. Anzu producing Trickstar in EnStars! appears to be her Greatest Second Chance.
    • Sakura Itoh feels she should repent for her "past sin" and prays (in a church) for the happiness of those she has hurt in the past, possibly referring to Anzu, considering she played a major part in Anzu being forced to transfer out of Kimisaki.
    • Reika regrets her role in Anzu's unofficial expulsion from Kimisaki that she personally refuses to come back to the student council when Himari and the Transfer Student went to look for her.
  • New Transfer Student: The Protagonist transferred from Yumenosaki to Kimisaki as a second year student.
  • Noodle Incident: Similar to how Ensemble Stars! had the "war", this game had a rebellion campaign of their own, being "The Troublemaker's Rebellion" which was led by Anzu to create a more carefree environment in Kimisaki, as it was a strict school and stifled the youth of those who attended.
  • No Name Given: The Protagonist does not have an official name.
  • Official Couple: The Protagonist and Natsumi become a couple at the end of the story.
  • One-Gender School: Kimisaki Academy was originally an all girls school but becomes co-ed once the Protagonist enrolls.
  • Passing the Torch: Himari eventually passes the role of Student Council President to the Protagonist, even wearing her armband.
  • Playboy Bunny: In Paradise, the girls who want to reform Kimisaki (such as Yako and Suzu) dress up as this. Also counts as Age-Inappropriate Dress considering they're high schoolers.
  • Ridiculously Average Girl: Azusa is a plain and normal high school girl, so normal to the point where she can't do any sports.
  • Japanese School Club: Kimisaki has a lot of clubs, as well as committees, sports teams and the student council:
    • Student Council
    • Art Club
    • Astronomy Club
    • Brass Band
    • Broadcasting Club
    • Chorus
    • Computer Club
    • Cooking Club
    • Critter Club
    • Drama Club
    • Gardening Club
    • Going Home Club
    • Literature Club
    • Occult Research Club
    • Rock Band Club
    • School Newspaper
    • Tea Ceremony Club
    • Archery Team
    • Basketball Team
    • Cheer Squad
    • Judo Team
    • Karate Team
    • Kendo Team
    • Lacrosse Team
    • Softball Team
    • Swim Team
    • Tennis Team
    • Track Team
    • Volleyball Team
    • Arboriculture Committee
    • Athletics Committee
    • Beautification Committee
    • Disciplinary Committee
    • Election Administration Committee
    • Healthcare Committee
    • Library Committee
    • Amusement Park
    • Café
    • merry-melody
  • Shared Universe: Ensemble Girls!! and Ensemble Stars! take place in the same universe, though on a larger scale, this doesn’t affect the storyline much outside of it explaining Anzu's initial characterization. The reason for this is most likely due to the fact that female characters are almost never shown on-screen in Ensemble Stars! (And vice versa for Ensemble Girls!! and their lack of on-screen male characters) with the exception of Anzu on the rare occasion that she cameo’s in another character’s card and the NPCs during the Work Mini-Game in Ensemble Stars!! Music.
  • Shrinking Violet: Aika Aino is extremely shy and usually reads in the corner of the classroom.
  • Stealth Sequel: More like "stealth prequel" as it explains Anzu's initial characterization.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: According to Ruri, the Protagonist looks very similar to Anzu, even though the two are not blood related.
  • The One Guy: The only male character is the Protagonist in an all girls school. Apparently it runs in the family.
  • Third-Person Person: Azusa refers to herself in the third person.
  • Won the War, Lost the Peace: The revolution Anzu planned ended with her loss and of Reika's victory. Unfortunately, neither Reika nor Sakura considered the teachers taking the chance to use Anzu's "defeat" to encourage the other students to bully Anzu out of school so they could keep their hands clean and claim that Anzu "transferred out of Kimisaki in her own accord". Anzu's unceremonious departure from Kimisaki due to the teachers encouraging the other students to be toxic towards her and Anzu's fellow friends becomes Reika and Sakura's greatest regrets with the realization that their fight for what is "right" results in someone else's life being ruined.
  • Workaholic: Misaki Maruko is extremely busy with a lot of things: being the newscaster for the school radio, a DJ during lunch break, helping out with student council duties and preparing for various school events. Poor girl can't catch a break. Himari is also very busy due to the her many duties as president and struggles to make time for the Literature Club as a result.
  • "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue: The game's epilogue takes place two years in the future, (roughly after year two of EnStars!! main story) with the cast finally breaking out of the time loop.
