"They might kill me, but they won't scare me."
Mike Holiday

Die in Style is an interactive stick figure animated web game made in Adobe Flash and released in 2003 by Simon Stenhouse.

Mike Holiday, a notorious 24 year-old hitman in the criminal underworld wanted for a long list of crimes, was arrested and sentenced to life in prison. He was then sent to a research facility where various weapons are being tested and developed.

The game can be played on StickPage here.

Examples

  • Animated Outtakes: The outtakes can be watched in the Extras, showing different animations where other mishaps happen during the tests. They include the guard's face getting sliced by the sliding doors, the swordfighting scientist slamming his head into the wall while charging, the guard accidentally shooting Mike in the head after tossing the pistol to him, and the MP-War-Bot instantly blowing up alongside Mike when he punches it.
  • Bare-Handed Blade Block: In the second attempt of the "Sword" option, Mike manages to block the sword with both of his hands. That does not save him however, when the scientist breaks the weapon free from his hands and goes for the second swing, which cleanly slices him in half.
  • Barrier-Busting Blow: Near the end of the "Semi-Auto Rifle" option, the MP-War-Bot busts its arm through a wall to catch the escaping Mike, which he dodges by sliding underneath it. He then deduces where it is going attack next, and moves out of the way when it busts through the wall again, retaliating by slamming the butt of his rifle into its face.
  • Catch and Return: In the first attempt of the "Knives" option, the Mike catches the knife thrown at him by the scientist. He then throws it back at him with deadlier precision.
  • Death's Hourglass: A variation in which the microwave in the break room is used as a timer. A scientist turns it on, right before Mike enters the room he and his colleagues are in. After the microwave timer stops, Mike proceeds to gun down everyone in the room before moving on.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Mike gets bisected during two tests— when one scientist slices his body in half with a sword and when another shoots a high caliber bullet from a sniper rifle which tears his body into two.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: In the second attempt of the "Knives" option, Mike is restrained by a rope for each arm, and the scientist throws a knife at him. Said knife cuts one of the ropes, and Mike catches the other knife with his free hand, cuts the other rope with it, and then stab the other scientist to death before the security guards intervene.
  • Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy: Zig-zagged. Despite their extensive research in creating lethal weapons, the scientists have a pretty terrible aim when it comes to using them on targets, especially unmoving ones. One of them accidentally cuts the rope tied to one of Mike's arm and another accidentally kills a guard with a throwing knife. The aim gets so bad that during Mike's escape, as he was shooting back at the guards pursuing him, the scientist shoots his semi auto rifle at him and misses all shots, which leads to Mike killing him in one shot with his pistol and taking the rifle for himself. In other tests though, they manage to hit Mike just fine, though only on the second shot. (One of them somehow misses him with his shotgun at point-blank range on the first shot.)
  • Killer Robot: The MP-War-Bot, invented by head scientist Fred Phillip, is deployed against Mike on two occasions. In the "MP-War-Bot" option, it is pitted against an unarmed Mike which it handily defeats in close-quarter combat. In the "Semi-automatic rifle" option, it tries to stop Mike from escaping the facility, but gets destroyed after he dodges its attacks and riddles it with bullets.
  • List of Transgressions: Mike has a hefty list of crimes according to his character bio, which includes 54 accounts of 1st-degree murder, 32 counts of assault and battery, 12 counts of grand theft auto, 2 counts of kidnapping, and 1 count of littering.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": When Mike barges into the break room where the other scientists are having their break, the viewer is treated to their inner thoughts being voiced out loud by the thought transmitter device a moment before he kills them.
    Scientist #1: Oh my God!
Scientist #2: Sometimes I wish I never left my room.
Scientist #3: OH MY GOD, I'M A DEAD MAN!
Scientist #4: Aw, I'm gonna have to change my underwear...
Mike: One for death, they are all gone.
  • Never Bring a Knife to a Gun Fight: In the first attempt of the "Sword" option, Mike jumps off a wall over a sword-wielding scientist's and snaps his neck, then steals his sword before using it to slice off one of the guards' arms when he charges at him with his baton. The other guard decides to pull out his pistol and shoot him in the leg, incapacitating him.
  • One-Man Army: Mike has some military training as well as 4 years worth of experience working in the criminal underworld, and it shows whenever he fights back, though he still ends up getting outmatched and killed in some cases. His combat skills are shown at their best in the "Semi-Automatic Rifle" option, when he singlehandedly mows down a group of guards with both a pistol and a rifle unscathed before escaping the test chamber.
  • Villain Protagonist: Mike Holiday is a professional killer turned test subject, and the game revolves around using various weapons to kill him.
  • Shotguns Are Just Better: The shotgun has a relatively better test result compared to other weapons, though the scientist using it misses Mike on the first shot.
  • The Straight and Arrow Path: In a setting where guns are available in plentiful quantity, the bows are one of the weapons the scientists test on Mike. The first attempt has a single arrow miss Mike, so for the second attempt, the scientists form a firing squad and unleash a Rain of Arrows where one pierces Mike through the top of his head, followed by another impaling him through his back.
  • They Killed Kenny Again: Mike gets killed in various ways during weapon testing, yet somehow always comes back to life for the next test.
