A Fighting Game developed by Arc System Works. It was the first fighting game to be released by the company on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It is set in a cookie-cutter Medieval Fantasy world, which serves as a contrast to Guilty Gear's and BlazBlue's heavy Science Fiction setting. The art style is very colorful and heavily fantastical, and the game's themes are much Lighter and Softer than its predecessor.
Gameplay is also much slower than the Guilty Gear or BlazBlue series, resembling Street Fighter more than anything.
The game saw a disc release on the 360, which is notoriously difficult to track down, and a digital release on the Playstation Network.
On July 7th, 2015, the game was given a Steam release under the title of Battle Fantasia -Revised Edition-.
Not to be confused with a set of Magical Girl Real Trailer Fake Game clips. Or with the Battle Fantasia Project.
This game provides examples of:
- A Boy and His X : Marco and his pet dragon Char-su. The dragon constantly accompanies him both in the story and aids him with fire techniques while fighting.
- Amazing Technicolor Battlefield
- Absolute Cleavage: Ashley is a male example, with his catsuit being open all the way to his waist!
- Ambiguously Bi: While it's clear that his heart belongs to Olivia, Ashley is still very seductive towards all fighters, male or female.
- Anachronism Stew: All over the place. If this is a medieval fantasy setting, why does Texas and a wild west gunslinger exist? And how can there be a Maid Café that serves sodas in this world? Not to mention that Urs has a MOTHERFUCKING LASER CHAINSAW THAT DOUBLES AS A VEHICLE SOMEHOW.
- Animated Armor: Deathbringer
- Annoying Younger Sibling: Marco to Urs.
- Anti-Frustration Features: In story mode, losing to the same enemy will start you with a special bar for the next match. Losing again will give you two. A third time gives you all three and if you still manage to lose, you get infinite super meter. Specially helpful since, to get 100% Completition, you must see all of the cutscenes of each character, which includes the losing cutscenes.
- Hitting opponents in Heat Up mode gives you a lot more super meter, which is needed for entering super mode. Which is the only reliable method of damaging The End of Deathbringer.
- Artificial Human: Odile. She was crafted by Dokurod through magic to serve as his assistant in regaining his body, and is only a year old by technicality.
- Ass Kicks You: Watson
- Possibly Marco as well. It's hard to tell with the Lens Flare.
- BFS: Deathbringer
- Marco, though only relatively, since he's a kid using an adult's sword.
- Black Knight: Deathbringer.
- Blind Without 'Em: Cedric cannot see anything without his glasses, which causes him to get extremely upset whenever he loses them
- Bodyguard Crush: Inverted with Ashley: he didn't fall in love with Olivia while guarding her, he became a Royal Guard to protect her because he loved her.
- Butt-Monkey: Dokurod. People constantly mistake his living doll Odile for Princess Olivia and attack the "evil stick" that "clearly" is possessing her.
- Cedric. He gets dragged into Marco's "adventure" and ends up having to fight people at every stop.
- Calling Your Attacks: "Texasu!" "Foruntia!"
- Cat Girl: Coyori
- Chainsaw Good: Urs' weapon, which doubles as a motorcycle!
- Childhood Friends: Urs and Olivia: since her mother and his father were members of the Four Heroes, they've known each other almost their entire lives.
- Chivalrous Pervert: Freed, Ashley.
- Combat Stilettos: Both Olivia and Odile wear impressive pairs of platform heels, and are excellent fighters in them. Even Coyori isn't immune, wearing platform okobo sandals and still managing to speed around in them.
- The Comically Serious: Odile's completely nonplussed reaction to all of the antics her Butt-Monkey father gets them into is often almost as amusing as Dokurod's overreaction to them.
- Cool Big Sis: Marco sees Olivia as this.
- Cool Mask: Face, at least in Marco's opinion. Freed on the other hand thinks it looks ridiculous.
- Cowboy Cop: By the standards of the Royal Guard, Ashley is one: his alternate story mode reveals he often advocated for going directly after Olivia when she'd been kidnapped, instead of filling out the necessary paperwork. He actually abdicated his position to his brother and left the Royal Guard so he could be more proactive about protecting Olivia.
- Damage-Sponge Boss: End of Deathbringer. He clocks in at over 32,000 HP in a game where the average character has about 3000.
- The Dandy: Ashley.
- Defeat Means Friendship: In Olivia's story mode, characters she defeats decide to join in as her "party" of guards. By the end, she's being followed by Urs, Marco, Cedric, Face, Freed and Ashley at the same time.
- Elegant Gothic Lolita: Odile, big-time.
- Emotionless Girl: Odile.
- Empathic Weapon / Evil Weapon: Dokurod
- Epic Flail: Cedric
- Evil Is Burning Hot: End of Deathbringer is constantly on fire, and only takes Scratch Damage from any attack where the player isn't in "Heat Up" mode.
- Everyone Can See It: Despite his utter refusal to admit it, Urs' feelings for Olivia are well-known by his family and friends.
- The Faceless: Despite the name, Face always wears a mask and his face is never seen until we see him remove it in his story mode ending artwork.
- Fighting Clown: Coyori. All the other characters have clearly believable fighting styles even if they don't look like fighters; Watson is a small rabbit, but also a powerful mage and a legendary hero. Marco is a kid, but wields a BFS and is accompained by a dragon. Olivia is a princess, but she has a spear she clearly wields well. Coyori? She's a cat girl running a maid cafe and fights with a tea tray and a broom.
- Fragile Speedster: Watson has the lowest HP, but moves around quickly, has an air dash and can duck over some attacks.
- Forgotten First Meeting: Ashley's alternate story mode reveals he and Olivia actually knew each other as children: an incident where she injured herself and he was unable to help was his motivation for joining the Royal Guard, but she seems to not remember him.
- Gentle Giant: Donvalve is the biggest character in the game, but also one of the kindest. Urs, Marco and Olivia all reffer to him as "Uncle Don".
- Grew Beyond Their Programming: A medieval example: Dokurod made Odile to be an Emotionless Girl and puppet for him to manipulate, but throughout her story mode, Odile develops more independence and self-awareness, as well as wanting to be friends with Olivia and falling in love with Ashley.
- Groin Attack: Marco using his grab against Face, complete with a bell sound!
- Guide Dang It!: Getting the secret routes in each character's story mode. The game tells you which fight is the one that will lead you to the extra route- but what exactly do you have to do? The game doesn't give you a hint.
- The Gunslinger: Face
- Hit Points: While mainly shown for cosmetic effect, in fighting games your characters do have set HPs, Battle Fantasia is the first to show them.
- Holy Hand Grenade: Cedric, whose powers mostly involves shooting spells made of holy energy.
- Honorary Uncle: Donvalve and Watson are this to Urs, Olivia, and Marco, due to them having been friends and fellow members of the Four Heroes with their parents.
- Hook Hand: Freed has a ridiculously huge one.
- Hot-Blooded: Urs, who just won't let anything get in his way.
- Identical Stranger: Dokurod's created daughter, Odile, happens to look almost exactly like a pale and eerie version of Olivia, and most people who meet her mistake her for the princess. Even Olivia, if she meets Odile, remarks on the resemblance. On a related note, both of them strongly resemble Jozetta, Face's lost love, which shocks him when he encounters either of them.
- Intergenerational Friendship: Marco (age 9) names Cedric (age 16) his partner and drags him along for his "adventure". Though his original intent was to fight the Van De Lands to settle an old family feud, by the end of his story mode, Cedric begins to genuinely consider Marco his friend.
- Keet: Marco seems to be constantly brimming with energy and wanting to play. Some characters like Urs and Cedric find this tiresome, while others like Freed and Olivia find it charming.
- Kid Hero: Marco.
- Killer Rabbit: Watson.
- Large and in Charge: Donvalve was the king of the dwarven empire before their civil wars caused it to collapse. Now he's in charge of his engineering company, Donvalve and Co.
- Lighter and Softer: This game takes place in a very colorful, medieval setting and much lampshade hanging takes place, in contrast to its precursor and successor.
- Loveable Sex Maniac: Cedric
- Luke, I Am Your Father: While it's never outright said, it's very heavily hinted that Deathbringer is actually Dyna Van De Land, father of Urs and Marco.
- Man on Fire: Characters ignite when they activate "Heat Up" mode, giving some of their attacks special properties for a limited time.
- Mighty Glacier: Donvalve is a pretty standard version, while Deathbringer is even slower but hits like a truck.
- Moveset Clone: Urs and Marco, Olivia and Odile/Dokurod.
- Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Deathbringer. Also known as The Black Knight, The Bringer of Omen and The Scion of Ill Presage. And then his One-Winged Angel form is named "The end of Deathbringer".
- Only Known by Their Nickname: The name "Face" is just how people reffer to the masked outlaw. His real name isn't revealed.
- Our Dwarves Are All the Same: Averted by Donvalve, who is a giant-sized Dwarf with a valve protruding from his torso.
- Rebellious Princess: Olivia
- Robe and Wizard Hat: Watson.
- Royals Who Actually Do Something: Olivia wants desperately to be one of these, but her history of being kidnapped, cursed, etc. means that most people she encounters want to keep her out of harm's way and urge her to go back to the castle.
- RPG Elements: In presentation, rather than gameplay. Health is called "HP" and displayed numerically, and the announcer calls "Level up!" as your special bar fills.
- Even more prevalent in the official site, where each character has listed gear, items being carried and level. All for aesthetic purpose, of course. The characters themselves also tend to lampshade this.
- The cave stage is clearly modeled after a standard RPG cave, with the background showing a sword encased in crystal, a red treasure chest in a small islet and what appears to be a save point. In the Town of Alden, on the other hand, the fight takes place in front of an item shop and an inn, giving it a First Town vibe.
- Ship Tease: Between Ashley and Odile: Odile seems to develop Love at First Sight for him in her story mode, and Ashley notes that, although she isn't Olivia despite resembling her, he feels a strange passion within him when he looks at her.
- SNK Boss: Deathbringer's second form, which can only be damaged in Heat Up mode.
- Speech Impediment: Marco pronounces his "R"s like "W"s. Justified, as he's only a little kid.
- Stalker with a Crush: Ashley towards Olivia, who justifiably has no idea who he is. Although he devotes his entire life to anonymously protecting Roselia's princess, calling himself her "shadow," it's quite apparent that he's also got deep feelings for her.
- Stay in the Kitchen: Face's opinion on Olivia fighting to save her country. Though in story mode it's revealed that this stems from Olivia resembling the woman he used to love and who he couldn't protect.
- Steampunk: Present in some areas, but especially evident in Donvalve.
- Still Wearing the Old Colors: Ashley is no longer a member of the Royal Guard, having lost the position to his brother. Nonetheless, he still wears the uniform and has the insignia of the Royal Guard tattooed on his chest.
- That Man Is Dead: Face's opinion on the person he used to be before becoming an outlaw.
- Wrong Genre Savvy: Marco does seem to know his RPG tropes: he insists on saving the game so he won't lose all the progress he made, looks for any possible switches or levers to open a potential entrance to a villain's lair and insists Cedric, who is smart but weak, provides support while he, who is armored, should go in front to tank the enemies. Alas, this is a fighting game...
