A friend of Alex’s informs him of an arcade opening, so he must reassemble a map and then hurry there before it closes. It was originally a Anmitsu Hime game before losing the license overseas.
Alex Kidd in High-Tech World has tropes like:
- Armor Is Useless: Parodied here where putting on a suit of samurai armor would completely immobilize you, causing a Game Over.
- The Artifact: Due to being a reskin of a game unambiguously set in Japan, High-Tech World retains the Wutai setting, despite it no longer making sense thematically.
- Company Cross-References:
- One of the questions on the quiz in the castle asks the player to name one of the levels from another SEGA game, Space Harrier.
- In the game's ending, Alex is seen sitting in an OutRun cabinet.
- Covers Always Lie: The game's cover art depicts Alex fighting a ninja by growing his fist like he would in other games, but he doesn't do that this time around, instead attacking by throwing stars.
- Denial of Diagonal Attack: The game has a very bad case of this: Alex Kidd can only attack horizontally, but the ninja can throw shurikens from any angle.
- Didn't Think This Through: Alex Kidd can choose to don a suit of Samurai Armor, but if he does, it will get him stuck and unable to move in it, leading to a game over.
- Dismantled MacGuffin: Alex's first order of business is to get the map to the arcade, which has been split into eight pieces. The first level of the game is dedicated to finding them all around his castle.
- Dolled-Up Installment: High-Tech World was originally released in Japan as a game based on the children's manga Anmitsu Hime. Anmitsu's sprite was redrawn and the storyline was changed for the localization, but pretty much all other graphics were unchanged, including Anmitsu's entire family, who are now Alex's family.
- Dub Text: At one point, Alex can eat hot dogs from a vendor... which clearly retains the slurping sounds from Princess Anmitsu eating bowls of ramen.
- Enforced Plug: At the end of Alex Kidd: High-Tech World, Alex sits down at a Deluxe Type cabinet of OutRun.HEY! THESE SEGA GAMES ARE GREAT!
- Excuse Plot: Alex Kidd seeks to gather pieces of a map, fight enemies, get a pass, then fight more enemies. Why? He seeks to get to an arcade.
- Guide Dang It!: Alex Kidd: High-Tech World is filled with puzzles with obscure or counterintuitive solutions, but the most infamous offender is a section where Alex needs to bypass a guard in village to continue his quest. All the apparent solutions turn out to be Red Herrings, the actual solutions involve talking to the right people at the right in-game time, or praying 100 times in front of a shrine. Doing anything else will result in either running out of in-game time or getting arrested. Given that the game was originally based on an anime, it's somewhat plausible that a Japanese player could figure it out, but it is extremely unlikely that a Western player could intuit either solution thanks to the change in setting that strips all context that could hint toward this.
- Help, I'm Stuck!: Alex Kidd can don a suit of armor only to get stuck in it, leading to a game over.
- Hopeless with Tech: One room in the castle has a computer that, as indicated by a sign next to it, is broken. If Alex tries to use it anyway, he will be electrocuted and instantly die.
- The Many Deaths of You: There are many ways for Alex to get a game over. Trapped in armor that does not let him move, falling down broken stairs, shocked by a computer that is broken, and falling into water are some of the ways.
- Mind Your Step: Alex Kidd can get a game over if he tries to climb down a set of broken stairs.
- Moon Logic Puzzle: The game is loaded with puzzles whose solutions make zero sense, like having to pray to a shrine 100 times just to obtain a travel pass.
- Ninja: Alex fights a group of them as enemies as he tries to head to town.
- Non-Lethal K.O.: Alex Kidd can get a game over by things like touching burnt paper that results in it no longer being fixable or eating too many hot dogs in one playthrough.
- Non-Standard Game Over: There are various ways to get Alex Kidd in trouble with some NPCs that can result in a game over.
- One-Hit-Point Wonder: Alex during the action segments, as per usual, though this time he doesn't even have extra lives.
- Prank Call: Alex can call 9-1-1 using the phones throughout the castle. Doing so will result in him getting scolded by the officer on the other end.
- Product Placement: High-Tech World is about Alex going to an arcade to play Sega's games, and the ending sees him sitting in an OutRun cabinet.
- Super Drowning Skills: If Alex falls into water, it is game over. This one is at odds with the rest of the series where he can swim.
- Sword Pointing: The guard of the gate will arrest Alex Kidd at sword point if he tries to leave town with an illegal object.
- Timed Mission: Alex has until 5PM, when the arcade closes, and if the in-game time reaches that, it's game over. This can lead to the amusing effect where arriving at 4:59 is considered a success, even though that should mean Alex only gets one minute in the arcade.
- Title Drop: High-Tech World is the name of the arcade Alex is trying to reach.
- Trial-and-Error Gameplay: Performing certain actions will result in an instant Game Over, and there is no indication that is the case until after you've lost. One such example is going down a certain staircase that looks no different from the others in the castle, as this specific one will turn out to be broken.
- Unwinnable by Design: In order to exit town, Alex has to bypass a guard who will check his pockets before letting him through. If Alex has any suspicious items on his person, however, the guard will arrest him, resulting in a Game Over. Since you cannot drop items, collecting any of these suspicious items such as the pistol or the book on printing travel passes will render it impossible to bypass the guard, even if you obtain a travel pass through legit means.
- What the Hell, Player?: There are various things that would lead to the player getting chewed out by the npcs which can lead to a game over.
- Who Dares?: If Alex tries to leave town with a gun, a fake pass, or a printing press for fake passes, the gate guard will tell him off for daring to do something that angers the gods before arresting him at sword point.
- A Winner Is You: For all the trials and tribulations the player goes through, all that counts as an ending is a short scene of Alex Kidd finally getting to happily play the arcade games.
- Wutai: The setting of High-Tech World, due to it being a Dolled-Up Installment.
- X-Ray Sparks: If Alex Kidd touches the broken computer, he will be shocked which leads to a game over.
