Ackley Bridge College is the swish new academy school set to end the segregation of the titular Yorkshire valley town’s White and Muslim populations, or so everyone hopes. Lifelong besties Missy and Nas find themselves attending the same school for the first time, but they as well as the other students and staff soon find that bringing the communities together will be far from easy.
Provides examples of:
- Abusive Parents: Kevin Wilson.
- Alpha Bitch: Marina in Series 4 and 5. In her first episode, she sets up a website to humiliate her own half-sister just because she was embarrassed at being excreted on by a horse. She later catfishes her own headteacher and just in general acts as if she runs the school. Character Development makes her more of a Lovable Alpha Bitch as Series 5 progresses.
- Amicable Exes: Mandy and Steve, despite their divorce, stay on good terms and she reassures him that he will he part of their child's life.
- Arranged Marriage: Kaneez was pulled out of school at sixteen to marry Iqbal and emigrated to England with him soon after, so she’s determined that Nas will get the education and opportunities that she missed out on. When she realises that Iqbal is trying to get Nas to agree to a marriage into a rich family in Pakistan, she hits the roof, accusing him of trying to sell his own daughter, the unstated implication being that they'll bail Iqbal out of his financial problems if the marriage goes ahead. Nas also shoots the idea down right out the gate. Iqbal insists that he would never force Nas to do anything she didn’t want to do, but instead of just letting the issue drop, he keeps trying to sell Nas on the idea. He wears her down enough that she yields and agrees in a vulnerable moment after Lila breaks up with her to at least consider it. Kaneez isn’t happy but tries to be supportive until Nas breaks down and admits that she can’t go through with it because she’s gay.
- Johnny and Rose in Series 4.
- Ascended Extra: Cory appears in Series 1, but not to do much. He is one of the most significant characters in Series 2 and 3.
- After years of being Out of Focus, Chloe finally has significance in Series 4, being Marina's best friend but having a crush on Marina's nemesis Fizza.
- Bratty Teenage Daughter: Marina is usually ungrateful and shallow, constantly arguing with her mother Jules.
- Break the Haughty: Happens to Alya after her father goes bankrupt.
- Bumbling Dad: Iqbal is a well-meaning but inept businessman who’s been absent for much of his kids’ day-to-day lives, leaving Kaneez to pick up the slack.
- Butch Lesbian: Samantha "Sam" Murgatroyd, Nas's girlfriend and Candice's cousin.
- Catfishing: Nas enters an online romance with a Pakistani girl in Series 2. It couldn't be going better - until Missy discovers it's Nas's own mother behind the fake profile!
- Marina also catfishes Mr. Evershed in Series 4.
- Characterization Marches On: Jordan's racism is very obvious in the first episode but this is soon ignored entirely and nonexistent by Series 2. History repeats in Series 5; Kyle makes racist remarks in some of his first few scenes but this never comes up again.
- Coming-Out Story: Naveed's sexuality is discovered by his homophobic mother in Series 2 Episode 10. By the end of the episode, he publicly comes out to everyone he knows at one of his comedy gigs.
- Delinquents: Jordan in Series 1-2 and Kyle in Series 5.
- Disappeared Dad: Missy and Hayley live with their Nana due to their mother's substance abuse (although they somewhat have a relationship with her). Their dad is completely absent.
- Drama Club: Multiple characters, notably Cory and Naveed, are in the drama club rehearsing for a School Play in Series 2.
- Elite School Means Elite Brain: Nas leaves Ackley Bridge to attend Oxford at the end of Series 3.
- Freeze-Frame Bonus: In Series 5 Episode 9, a letter from Nas wishing her mother and brother luck for their exams is the focus of one shot, but one could miss what it says if not paying attention.
- Gayborhood: Kaneez actually goes to Hebden Bridge to find out more about lesbians after Nas comes out to her.
- Gay Guy Seeks Popular Jock: Naveed has a crush on his popular best friend Cory in Series 2.
- Girl Posse: Subverted in that Marina (who is introduced as a mean girl) becomes very close with Fizza, Chloe, Hayley, Rukhsana, and Spud by the end of Series 5, but they are still individual characters and Marina is no longer an Alpha Bitch.
- Glasgow: Lila accidentally outed herself to her dad after he caught her kissing her girlfriend outside King Tut’s.
- The Glorious War of Sisterly Rivalry: Half-sisters Kayla and Marina are like this (Kayla is more well-behaved and nerdy whereas Marina is an Alpha Bitch), but there are moments that show they care about each other.
- The Good Old British Comp: Ackley Bridge is this, only it is an academy and not a proper comprehensive.
- Held Back in School: Missy is repeating her GCSE year as a result of turmoil at home caused by her mother Simone’s heroin addiction.
- High-School Dance: There is one in the Series 5 finale, which is also the series finale.
- Imagine Spot: Missy briefly imagines Nana Booth appearing in class with her and Hayley to chat about food after her death.
- Nas stops in front of an Asian bridal shop window and tries to picture herself getting married to the guy her dad’s pushing on her only to freak out when the groom turns out to be Lila.
- Implied Rape: In Series 5 Episode 7, Marina and a boy she barely knows, Josh, go somewhere private during a party. Although she somewhat fancies him, he is extremely touchy and she appears to just freeze up as he embraces her. The scene cuts to Marina traumatically leaving the party. The next episode focuses on the aftermath, essentially confirming he raped her but the word is never said. Overlaps with Rape as Drama and Rape Discretion Shot.
- Inner City School: Inverted. Ackley Bridge is a former mill town in a valley somewhere in the vicinity of Leeds and Bradford, but the rural landscape at the edges of the town is pretty much the only differentiating factor from any given inner-city neighbourhood, and the school has to contend with many of the same issues you might expect to see in a deprived urban area such as racial tensions and students dealing with abuse and/or addiction in their home lives.
- Intimate Hair Brushing: Kaneez has her hair restyled and talks about how she and her sisters would comb each other's hair back in Pakistan. Her daughter then brushes her hair for her.
- Intra-Scholastic Rivalry: This is how Ackley Bridge is portrayed at the beginning of the series, shortly after the merging of two schools; the white students and Muslim students do not integrate well at first.
- Jerkass: Alya Nawaz, who acts as a mean girl and makes fun of other people's financial situations.
- Jerkass Has a Point: Jordan might be a self-confessed racist and all-round inflammatory dipshit, but he makes a good point about how successful integration is unlikely to alleviate the real reason the town is going down the drain:”We all know Ackley Bridge is nothing but a left-for-dead town with foodbanks, smackheads and pramfaces. It doesn’t matter if you’re White or Asian. There’s no jobs for us. We’re all going nowhere.”
- Living Prop: The show often reuses extras to make the school setting more realistic; some extra characters are named and are clearly seen interacting with main characters, but are essentially just living props and have no plot significance. Furthermore, Rukhsana and Spud appear very often in Series 5 but barely have lines and have no storylines revolving around them.
- Mistaken for Gay: In Series 1, Riz gives Cory his sister Alya's phone number… except he doesn't, and gives him his number instead. When Cory finds out Riz has been getting his flirty texts meant for Alya, Cory's first thought is that Riz is gay. Riz admits it was so he could get inspiration on how to talk to girls.
- My Local: Much like Teachers, the school observes the custom of staff and pupils going to separate pubs, something Chloe only realises when Hayley and Raz dupe her into going to the teachers’ pub, The Two Moons.
- Never My Fault: Sadiq’s response to his infidelity being made public, an attitude that absolutely infuriates both his children.
- Non-Uniform Uniform: There is clearly a school uniform, but often main characters have some sort of casual jacket or accessory that makes them stand out (such as Missy's iconic jacket or Johnny's denim jacket).
- Not Actually His Child: For most of Series 1, everyone believes that Jordan is the father of Candice's baby, before The Reveal via DNA test that Jordan's brother Cory is actually the father.
- Obnoxious In-Laws: Kaneez is despised by Rashid's mother Zainab in Series 4.
- Only Known by Their Nickname: Kacey "Spud" Gartside.
- Out of Focus: Chloe Voyle, Razia Paracha and Hayley Booth have all received less focus since Series 1. Ultimately subverted with Chloe when she has more of a significant role in Series 5.
- Parental Substitute: Missy and Hayley’s nana moved in with them after Simone lost custody. Owing to her poor physical health, she isn’t able to do much actual parenting, but instead acts as a buffer between the girls and Social Services so that Missy can continue to look after Hayley. As the series goes on, it becomes clearer that Emma and Kaneez are the people Missy turns to when she needs help.
- The Place
- Pop-Up Texting
- Put on a Bus: Major characters come and go what feels like all the time - sometimes mid-series. Significant examples include:
- Jordan, who departs for art college at the end of Series 2.
- Nas, whose story is complete and she leaves for university at the end of Series 3.
- Cory, who disappears without a trace between Series 3 and 4 despite still being a student.
- Mandy, who gets a new job and departs mid-Series 4.
- Kayla, who moves away three episodes into Series 5.
- Racist Grandma: Sue Carp fills this role in the teaching faculty.
- Retool: In Series 4, the episode runtime was shortened and several new characters joined to replace the many who left at the end of the previous series. The timeslot was also moved to 6pm in order to appeal to a younger audience.
- Rugby Is Slaughter: Downplayed. Riz has a spinal injury in Series 2 during a game, and Rukhsana gets a minor ankle injury in Series 5.
- School Sport Uniform: The sport uniform is orange and purple.
- Secret Other Family: Iqbal is discovered to have another partner and two children in Bradford. He visits them under the guise of "working in Pakistan".
- Settled for Gay: This is what Nas and Naveen's original plan was; a gay and a lesbian marrying to hide their true sexualities from their potentially unaccepting families.
- Starving Student: A recurring theme is the students coming from poor backgrounds; especially Cory and Jordan. Johnny and Queenie are also struggling in Series 5.
- Teacher/Parent Romance: Headteacher Martin Evershed enters a relationship with Kayla and Marina's mother Jules. Technically this also qualifies for Kaneez (mother of protagonist Nas) and Rashid, but in that case they are also both Ackley Bridge staff.
- Teen Pregnancy: Candice Murgatroyd had one of these.
- Missy becomes pregnant in Season 2, but has an abortion.
- Those Two Guys: Rukhsana and Spud are rarely seen apart.
- Troubled Teen: Pretty much all of the main teen character seem this way (abusive parents, poverty, delinquents etc.)
- Two-Teacher School: The faculty seems absurdly small for a secondary school that is a merger of two other schools.
