Tropes for this episode include:

  • A Day in the Limelight: The episode primarily focuses on Robin and Batgirl having to the save the day without the aid of Batman.
  • Badass Boast: Detained by Black Mask's men, Batman is told the shockwave generator has already been moved.
Batman: That just means a little more work for me and a lot more pain for you.
  • Big Red Button: How Batgirl brings down the station's security gates. Unfortunately, all of the buttons are red and none of them are labeled, forcing her to try them all.
  • Breaking Out the Boss: Black Mask's thugs organize their boss's liberation from the GCPD. As soon as Black Mask is free, he electrocutes his right-hand man and hands the reins over to a random goon.
  • Brick Joke: When Batman assigns Batgirl and Robin to assist with helping the police bring Black Mask into custody while as he looks for the weapon, the two talk about how they are only given grunt, and wonder if Batman will have them wash the Batmobile next. At the end of the episode, Batman asks the two who would like to wash the Batmobile, much to their surprise.
  • Bullying the Dragon: Two henchmen mock Batman for not having his utility belt. This backfires as Batman was awaiting them to fall for his trap.
  • The Comically Serious: While trapped by Batgirl and Robin, Black Mask gets briefly flustered enough to stop giving them Hannibal Lectures after listening to their banter about his reasons for wearing a mask.
Batgirl: I bet he picked his nose off.
Robin: A bad perm and a mustache.
Black Mask: What are you talking about?!
  • Cool Big Sis: Batgirl comforts Robin whenever he's in doubt about their odds in fighting off Black Mask's men.
  • Dick Dastardly Stops to Cheat: Batman had already been securely captured with no feasible way to escape his cell when two of Black Mask's henchmen pick up his utility belt and mock him for losing it. This allows him to voice activate it to shock them and reclaim it to escape. Had they simply avoided the urge to gloat over an already beaten hostage, they would have won.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Robin and Batgirl feel that Batman does not trust them enough to give them the more important missions.
  • Earthquake Machine: Black Mask uses this to blackmail Gotham to hand him money.
  • The Easy Way or the Hard Way: On his way out of the station, Black Mask gives the sidekicks the option. They opt for the hard way and manage to lock Black Mask in a cell.
  • Evil Laugh: Black Mask has a creepy variation.
  • Got Volunteered: To his frustration, Robin keeps getting tasked with keeping mooks busy while Batgirl works.
  • Hyper-Competent Sidekick: Although they are no Batman, the two sidekicks prove they are just as formidable as the real one.
  • Knockout Gas: Black Mask's operation incapacitates the police this way. Batgirl and Robin only avoid it by getting their gas masks on in time.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain!: Two of Black Mask's henchmen decide to mock Batman while they have him captive and they have his utility belt. This allows Batman to escape as he uses the voice activation on the utility belt to shock the two and knock them out, and escape from captivity in time to help save the Gotham from Black Mask's weapon.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: In response to Black Mask lecturing that they're nothing more than scared children in over their heads, Batgirl and Robin openly insult his trademark appearance.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: As Batgirl and Robin observe numerous mooks about to burst into the police station.
Robin: Looks like more grunt work.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Black Mask looks down on the sidekicks due to their age. Nevermind that at the end of the day, both of them not only work alongside the Dark Knight but can keep up with him for good reason.
  • Villain in a White Suit: Black Mask wears a sharp white suit, which became his default look even in other media.
  • Where's the Kaboom?: Black Mask triggers the shockwave generator and the countdown dramatically reaches zero, but nothing happens. Batman has defused it.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Black Mask has no problem with fighting Robin and Batgirl and even outright states he's contemplating having his men 'skin them like a cat' once he gets out.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Black Mask kills his Number 1 for letting children stop them, despite the fact that he himself doesn’t fare any better against them.
