On Coruscant, a group of Jedi discuss what to do with Mae and resolve to find who trained her. Sol convinces Vernestra to let him lead the mission to intercept Mae on Khofar and asks Osha to come with him. Upon arriving, they learn that Kelnacca retreated into the forests one day and never came back; the group has enlisted a tracker, Bazil, to lead the group to him. Osha is attacked by an umbramoth, an alien attracted to light, but Sol slays it. She admits to Jecki that she is disturbed by the situation.
Meanwhile, Qimir leads Mae through the forests to Kelnacca's dwelling and Mae ponders the test. She traps Qimir and declares her loyalty to Osha and her intention to surrender to the Jedi. Mae finds Bazil at Kelnacca's abode; both Mae enters to find Kelnacca already slain. As the party approaches the house, the Master arrives and engages the party in combat.
Tropes:
- Alien Gender Confusion: Osha refers to the tracker, Bazil, as "he", then corrects herself to "they" until Yord clarifies he's a he.
- All There in the Script: The credits reveal the Cerean Jedi that attended the strategy meeting is none other than future Jedi Council member, Ki-Adi-Mundi.
- Badass Fingersnap: Not quite a fingersnap, but when Mae's Master shows up, they Force-throw Osha to the side with just a flick of their fingers.
- Bad Liar: Qimir’s awkward way of insisting he’s never seen the Master strongly implies he does indeed know who he is and has seen his face.
- Big Creepy-Crawlies: The forest of Khofar is inhabited by giant insects that look like a cross between pillbugs and moths. Fortunately, they mostly keep to themselves and the one specimen that doesn't flies right into a lightsaber.
- Call-Forward:
- Sol is concerned that if Mae is killed, the Jedi will lose any chance of learning who her master is. Obi-Wan will similarly lament the loss of Count Dooku and any potential leads on Darth Sidious during "The Phantom Apprentice".
- Yord refers to Osha as "civilian", her being a tagalong on an official Jedi mission, like how Mace Windu will refer to Ahsoka Tano as "citizen" when he effectively kicks her out of the war room talk in "Shattered".
- The Cameo: When the Jedi are meeting about Mae, future Jedi High Council member Ki-Adi-Mundi can be seen.
- Canon Immigrant: Subtitles reveal that Bazil is a Tynnan, a species that first appeared in The Han Solo Trilogy, and was previously recanonized by Star Wars: Catalyst.
- Cliffhanger: The episode ends with the Master, having just killed Kelnacca, effortlessly pushing back the entire Jedi team.
- Death Is Such an Odd Thing: Jecki comments that it's an honor to see a creature join the Cosmic Force.
- Dramatic Irony: Osha is convinced that Mae is beyond saving and even asks Yord to kill her if it comes to that. Mae, meanwhile, has decided that Osha's survival is a game-changer and she opts to surrender to the Jedi until the Master complicates that option.
- Establishing Character Moment: After his cameo at the end of the first episode, the first acts the Master carries out here are to kill a Jedi Master without even being noticed, then to Force push no fewer than eight Jedi (including a Master), sending them all flying backwards helplessly.
- Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Mae decides that Osha's survival changes everything for her, and she decides to surrender to the Jedi rather than carry out the Master's plans any further. The Master has other ideas.
- Everything Trying to Kill You: Implied to be the case for Khofar's forests at night.
- Five-Second Foreshadowing: There's a lingering red light in Kelnacca's hut when Mae finds his body, hinting at the Wookiee's demise by red lightsaber seconds before Mae realizes what happened.
- Gilligan Cut: Osha agrees on coming with the Jedi search party, but only if she doesn't have to wear the civilian robes. Cut to a shot of Osha sitting in the ship wearing the civilian robes and looking none too pleased about it.
- Godzilla Threshold: The Jedi have all been reluctant to wield their sabers against Mae, but the moment the Master sparks his red saber, they all spark theirs.
- Hidden Depths: Despite training under the Dark Side's influence , Mae ultimately decides to turn herself in after learning about Osha's survival.
- Killed Offscreen: Kelnacca is executed by the Master in his hut while Mae is outside.
- Locked Out of the Loop: The group of Jedi who know about the killings decide to not tell the Jedi Council, since if they know they'll have to tell the Senate, and if that happens, it's a public image disaster.
- Missed Him by That Much: Kelnacca was evidently killed by the Master mere moments before Mae found him, given his lightsaber wounds are still steaming when she finds his corpse.
- Mission Briefing: Yord briefs the Jedi team on Kelnacca's status on Khofar. Osha tries to pay attention, but Bazil distracts her.
- My God, What Have I Done?: Downplayed; she keeps her composure, but Osha is clearly upset by having disturbed the umbramoth, which forced Master Sol to kill it.
- My Significance Sense Is Tingling:
- Osha's sensitivity to the Force is reawakening, with her sensing the umbramoth's presence, and freezing in visible terror even before the Master shows himself.
- Sol is the first to turn back to where the Master is approaching from behind them.
- No One Could Survive That!: Sol defends his failure to report Mae's potential survival by saying he honestly believed she died, because of this trope.
- No Sense of Personal Space: The Master gets practically nose to nose with Osha before Sol charges and he tosses her.
- Oddly Small Organization: Surprisingly Averted. After decades of showing the Jedi High Council dealing directly with almost every plotline across multiple media, this episode reveals that Venestra is actually the equivalent of Jedi middle management and the entire crisis is being handled without the involvement or even knowledge of the High Council.
- Oh, Crap!:
- Mae freezes when she sees Kelnacca's dead body with a visible lightsaber slash.
- Osha is frozen with terror upon coming face-to-face with the Master.
- The Jedi collectively have a moment when the Master ignites his red lightsaber before immediately pulling out their own, only for the Master to push them all back with a single gesture.
- One-Man Army: Mae's Master shows off his skills by driving back eight Jedi, including a very experienced master, with a single Force push. It's even more impressive when considering his ability to hide his presence from them, which is explained as something only a true master of the Dark Side (like Palpatine) can do.
- Resignations Not Accepted: Qimir warns Mae that betraying the Master will result in him paying her back with interest.
- Sigil Spam: For some reason, Kelnacca has drawn the Brendok witches' spiral/yin-yang symbols all over the walls of his house.
- Significant Background Event: As the camera focuses on Osha's reaction to the Jedi standoff against Mae, the Master can be seen in the background descending to the forest floor preparing to confront the Jedi.
- Stealth Expert: The Master not only managed to kill Kelnacca without the Wookiee even getting up from his chair to defend himself, but he disappeared from Kelnacca's hut seconds later and managed to get behind the Jedi and Osha without them realizing it until he reveals himself.
- Tempting Fate: Mae decides to surrender to Kelnacca, telling Qimir that even the Master couldn't find his way through Khofar's dense forest without a guide. Not only does the Master reach and kill Kelnacca mere moments before Mae's arrival, but it's implied that he was trailing both his Acolyte and the Jedi search party the entire time.
- Think Nothing of It:Osha: Thank you.
Jecki: For what?
Osha: For helping me find my sister. Prove my innocence. Clear my name.
Jecki: I was just doing my duty. - Translator Buddy: Yord is the only one who understands the tracker's language, since he took it instead of Shyriiwook in training.
- Translator Microbes: Downplayed. A galaxy far far away has devices that can do translations for you, albeit they're a little slow and awkward. Jecki uses one to find out from a local where Kelnacca is staying.
- The Worf Effect: Mae and Qimir spent the last few episodes worried about the prospect of somehow killing Kelnacca, but Mae finds that the Master evidently killed Kelnacca by surprise; Mae realizes with horror that this can only mean the Master was the culprit. And it only gets worse when, with just a single move, the Master shows that he is far beyond the capacity of the party sent after Kelnacca by throwing them all back with a single gesture.
- Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Mae lures Qimir into a trap by screaming and calling for help.
- You Are Too Late: By the time anybody finally catches up to Kelnacca, he’s already been slain by the Master.
