9-1-1 S7E2 "Rock the Boat" Recap
The disastrous cruise continues when Bobby and Athena respond to the ship's explosion, racing to aid injured passengers. Meanwhile, Hen questions her instincts in a life-taking call and grows concerned about Athena and Bobby's whereabouts.

Tropes featured in this episode:

  • Alas, Poor Villain: Hen dwells to Karen that even though Kyle Ortiz was being an "entitled rich brat", he didn't deserve to die.
  • Asshole Victim:
    • Jarod, the passenger who's been insisting on having his gambling winnings paid out before he leaves the sinking ship and shows a Lack of Empathy towards Norman getting shot, falls onto the ceiling when the ship capsizes. It's revealed that he died from the impact in the next episode.
    • Kyle Ortiz causes a car accident while under the influence and dies from a brain bleed after refusing medical care.
  • Crazy-Prepared: When asked why she has zip ties on her, Athena replies, "Because they wouldn't let me bring my cuffs."
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Hen feels this way towards Eddie, Buck, and Chim when it seems they don't support her statement about Kyle Ortiz being under the influence.
  • From Bad to Worse: The ship has just survived an attack by pirates and a bombing right as a massive storm hits.
  • Hate Sink: Kyle Ortiz caused a car crash and showed no empathy for the drivers he hurt.
  • Mama Didn't Raise No Criminal: Following Kyle's death, his mother, Councilwoman Olivia Ortiz, insists that he couldn't have been drunk and demands an investigation into his death. It turns out that he wasn't just drunk, he was on drugs.
  • Spotting the Thread: Athena is able to figure out from some past interactions how Lola and the cruise director are having an affair and the guy is using Lola for his smuggling tricks.
  • Surprise Car Crash: While not exactly in the classic sense, the cruise scene cuts to the 118 dealing with a car collision.
  • Tempting Fate:
    • Hen lets Kyle Ortiz be arrested without trying to have him accessed in spite of his non-compliance, even noting to Chimney "Why is it that drunks always come out of these things without a scratch?". Cue Kyle Ortiz coding.
    • No sooner has an engineer said, "I think we're going to be okay," after fixing the communications, the system being rebooted sets off a bomb that threatens to sink the ship.
  • Too Dumb to Live:
    • Jarod, whose concern for his gambling winnings outweigh the urgency of getting off of the ship.
    • Kyle Ortiz, who dies after refusing care following the car accident that he caused by driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
