Bloo has a reputation for being a funny imaginary friend, though his jokes sometimes offend people. When Bloo cracks a joke about an imaginary friend’s height, "the New Guy" challenges him to meet him outside at 4:00 to get squashed.
This episode provides examples of:
- All for Nothing: Bloo nearly avoided getting smashed and would have escaped without a scratch, since the New Guy actually found his joke funny and wanted to be a jokester like him. Unfortunately, he spoils it by calling the New Guy's act "lame", which angers the New Guy, who proceeds to smash his fist on top of Bloo, thus rendering all of Bloo's efforts to get out of being squished for naught.
- Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Bloo tells the other imaginary friends that he gets called out all the time by bullies, criminals, and old ladies.
- Bait-and-Switch:
- After the New Guy appears to have beaten up Terrence, Mac tells Bloo to run as far away from Foster's as possible, and Bloo is seen riding a taxi, a speedboat, and an airplane. It is then revealed that Bloo is merely thinking about doing all those things.
- When Bloo comes face to face with the New Guy, the new guy asks him "I got question for you. What's blue and red all over?" and pulls out a mallet, making it look like he's going to smash Bloo with it. It is then revealed that he was actually smashing a watermelon next to Bloo so he could cover him in it.
- Berserk Button: It is revealed in this episode that Wilt is not a fan of height jokes. While he is usually apologetic and outgoing, he wishes for Bloo to get beat up, to Bloo's face, because Bloo told a bad one to the New Guynote
- Blind Without 'Em: This episode reveals that Mr. Herriman is blind without his monocle. Though when he hears Bloo and looks very closely, we see through his perspective as he spends an extended time focusing his poor sight on the troublemaker to see him clearly enough.
- Brief Accent Imitation: Bloo does this with Mr. Herriman's British accent.
- Cowardice Callout: Madame Foster calls Bloo a lily-livered cream puff for trying to get out of his fight with the New Guy.
- Cut-and-Paste Note: Bloo misunderstands what the New Guy says and concludes that he wants to beat him up. Consequently, Bloo tries everything he can to leave the house and settles for expulsion. He confesses everything he'd ever done including putting hot sauce into everyone's food and framing "Jolly Buttons". Mr Herriman is shocked by this and explains that they had Jolly deported. Bloo says "I know. He still sends me postcards" He then holds up a note composed with letters cut from a magazine. It reads "I Will Get You." Unfortunately, this gets ignored once Herriman sides in watching Bloo get tortured.
- Dirty Coward: Bloo does everything he can to try and get out of fighting the New Guy. He looks for places to hide, he tries getting the New Guy evicted from Foster’s, he tries getting himself evicted from Foster’s, he breaks every clock in the house so nobody will know when it’s time for the fight, he hires Terrence to fight the New Guy for him, and then he just tries running away from Foster’s.
- "Eureka!" Moment:
- When Mr. Herriman is about to expel Bloo from Foster's for stealing his monocle, he mentions that Bloo will not be allowed to return to Foster's at any time, including 4:00 in the afternoon. Upon hearing this, Bloo realizes that getting expelled may be just what he needs to avoid getting into a fight with the New Guy, listing a bunch of other bad things he did to ensure he gets expelled. Unfortunately, when Bloo mentions that he will be getting in a fight with the new guy, Herriman overlooks this, having a "Eureka!" Moment of his own where he can just let Bloo be beaten.
- When Bloo explains his situation to Mac, Mac tells him that if his bully is half the bully that Mac's is, he will spend the rest of his life face down in a pile of sweaty socks. This gives Bloo the idea to have Terrence fight the New Guy, figuring that Terrence is the bigger of the two bullies. Unfortunately for Bloo, Terrence ends up scared out his mind when he actually sees the New Guy.
- Eye Scream: The New Guy inflicts this on himself by squirting grapefruit juice in his eyes as part of his comedy act. Bloo isn't impressed, and the New Guy proceeds to squash him with his fist.
- Explain, Explain… Oh, Joy!: Bloo tries to get himself evicted from Foster’s by Mr. Herriman so he won’t have to fight the New Guy. To get evicted, Bloo tells Herriman about some pranks he pulled, and how he’s getting in a fight later. When Herriman hears Bloo is fighting the New Guy, he says the New Guy would destroy Bloo, and then decides not to evict Bloo so that the blue thorn in his side will get killed.
- Fearless Fool: Played straight at first, then subverted. At first, Bloo isn’t the least bit scared of the New Guy, even though he’s absolutely gigantic. However, it soon dawns on Bloo how easily the New Guy could crush him, and then he becomes terrified.
- Fight Fire with Fire: Bloo calls the trope by this name when Mac gives him the idea to have Terrence fight the new guy.
- Fire-Breathing Diner: According to a Noodle Incident, Bloo spiked the tacos with Blazing Inferno Hellfire Sauce on Taco Night, causing the other imaginary friends to breathe fire. He later put the blame on Jolly Buttons, which got him deported from the country.
- Frame-Up:
- Bloo tries to frame the New Guy for being the one who stole Mr. Herriman’s monocle, but Herriman catches him in the act.
- Bloo confesses that he also framed an imaginary friend named Jolly Buttons for a prank he pulled, and Jolly got deported for it.
- Fun with Homophones: When the New Guy reveals himself to want to be a comedian, he says that he wants to berry him. That is, cover him with berries instead of bury him in the ground.
- Goo Goo Getup: As part of his plan to convince Terrence to fight the New Guy, Bloo has Mac wear a baby bonnet and a pink T-shirt that says "Mac Like-A The Potty!" as well as suck on a pacifier as a form of humiliation.
- Idiot Ball: Mac and Bloo somehow believed that Terrence might be able to beat the New Guy in a fight, even though they’ve both seen the New Guy, who’s at least a hundred times bigger than Terrence.
- Immediate Self-Contradiction: At the beginning of the episode, when Yogi Boo Boo asks Bloo how he got Mr. Herriman's monocle, Bloo tells him "A pro never reveals his secrets. I snagged it off his nightstand while he was sleeping."
- Jerkass Ball: Madame Foster has a firm grasp on it in this episode when she finds out that he's going to face the New Guy. What does she do? She raises money off of Bloo's suffering by betting against him in a poll. For someone who's supposed to be the founder and head mistress of the household Madame Foster is supposed to care about the well-being of the friends. Here, she's betting against Bloo simply to watch him be in pain. And to cap it all off, she had no idea about the joke Bloo made at the New Guy's expense.
- At one point, Bloo begins to break all of the clocks in the home so no one will be able to figure out when 4:00 is to avoid the fight. Madame Foster brings in a clock that is made out of plexiglass, which is too durable for Bloo to break normally.
- Loophole Abuse: Bloo intentionally gets himself in a lot of trouble hoping to get expelled. Why? He is about to get into a fight with the New Guy (to quote Mr. Herriman: "That vicious, gargantuan bone-crusher"). Mr. Herriman does the math and decides this isn't an illegal fight but a "gentleman's challenge" which is totally legal.
- No Name Given: It’s never revealed what the giant imaginary friend’s name is. Everyone just calls him "the new guy".
- Not So Above It All: Mr. Herriman forgoes his initial expulsion of Bloo, despite the latter's numerous confessions, in favor of letting him get beat to a pulp by the New Guy. He does this almost immediately after saying that getting into a fight was "a direct violation of house charter."
- Possession Presumes Guilt: Bloo tries to invoke this trope by hiding Mr. Herriman's monocle in the New Guy's room so that Herriman will expel him. Unfortunately, Herriman finds out that Bloo took his monocle.
- Punching Bag of Hatred: Mr. Herriman beats a bop bag resembling Bloo with a stick after he catches him wearing his monocle.
- "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Wilt delivers one to Bloo, showing that he is not a fan of height jokes and will applaud the New Guy and wish that Bloo is getting exactly what he deserves when the clock strikes 4:00.
- "Shaggy Dog" Story: In the end, it is revealed that the New Guy never wanted to beat Bloo up. In fact, he liked Bloo's joke about his height and wanted to be a comedian like him. Then Bloo calls his joke lame and he gets smashed anyway.
- Unishment: When Herriman threatens to evict Bloo from Foster’s for stealing his monocle, Bloo becomes happy since getting evicted is preferable to getting brutally killed by the New Guy, and he confesses to all his other misdeeds to make sure he gets kicked out. However, when Herriman hears Bloo is supposed to fight the New Guy, he decides not to evict him, since he agrees fighting the New Guy would be worse.
