Release date of the remastered episode: May 24th, 2024.
Carl's step brother Logan starts dating Mary-Lynn after she breaks up with Gooper after she catches him cheating on her with another girl. This causes concern in Carl due to Mary-Lynn's more than problematic nature.
Tropes
Both versions:
- Food Slap: In both versions, Mary-Lynn throws a milkshake at Gooper's face for cheating on her. In the remaster, Gooper also throws one at Logan's face while Talia spills three all over Mary-Lynn, either accidentally or as payback for calling her “Thunder Thighs” a few days ago.
- Heroic BSoD: Logan falls into a mentally, destroyed state as he locks himself in his bedroom crying about Mary-Lynn breaking up with him after she extorted him to get back to Gooper. He even blames himself for what he did wrong while he regrets ever trusting Mary-Lynn for all the things she did to him.
- No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Gooper gives this to Carl when he learns of Logan dating Mary-Lynn.
- In the classic episode, Gooper viciously attacks Carl before driving over him with his motorcycle. Carl is completely recovered by the next scene and even casually tells his friends about the incident.
- In the remastered episode, Gooper ambushes Carl outside his home alongside his gang, causing him to arrive at school covered in bruises.
- Relationship Revolving Door: As stated by Carl and his friends, Gooper and Mary-Lynn are always breaking up and getting back together, with Mary-Lynn always coming back to Gooper in the end. Surely enough, Mary-Lynn goes back to Gooper after getting bored of Logan, and in the remaster she breaks up with Gooper a few days later and tries to lure Logan back to her, only for him to coldly dismiss her.
- Revenge by Proxy: Gooper beats up Carl when he learns that Mary-Lynn has began to date Logan.
- Straw Vegetarian: Mary-Lynn states that she doesn't eat meat because she cares about animals (Although she is very trigger-happy when it comes to trying to kill a pigeon for pooping on her), and accordingly insults Linda's cooking and gets into an argument with Calvin over eating habits. However, she later tells Logan that she craves Goomburger, something that Carl rightfully calls her out for.
- You Are Fat: Mary-Lynn criticises Calvin for his weight during the dinner with Logan's family, which greatly upsets Calvin. In the remastered episode, she also calls Talia "thunder thighs".
Classic version (Screw your tropes, Carl Mitchell!):
- Big Ball of Violence: Gooper attacks Carl into a big dust ball of violence.
- Breaking the Fourth Wall: When Calvin and Linda are being introduced to Mary-Lynn, the latter assumes that they're both the parents of Carl and Logan, to which Calvin replies with this:Calvin: No no no no no, I'm Logan's father, she's Carl's mother, and we're married. We keep having to explain this cuz the audience still thinks I'm Carl's Dad.
- Oh, Crap!: This is Carl's reaction when he sees Kenny hooking up with Mary-Lynn.
- Shout-Out: At one point, Calvin refers to Mary-Lynn as Worzel Gummidge.
Remastered version (Just 308 tropes, why?):
- Be Careful What You Wish For: Carl tells his friends at the beginning of the episode that he wishes Logan would move out of home. When Logan does pack his bags and attempt to leave for Mushroom City with Mary-Lynn, Carl pleads him not to and tells him that he is making a huge mistake.
- Berserk Button: Calling Calvin fat results in him storming out of a dining hall and complain towards the offender who mocked his weight.
- Big "SHUT UP!": Both Gooper and Mary-Lynn exclaim this at exactly the same time towards Flaig after he claims the picture of Gooper making out with another girl was allegedly faked.
- But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Carrie gives Mary-Lynn nasty looks throughout the dinner at the Mitchells' home for what she did to her during Talia's birthday party, but Mary-Lynn can't be bothered to remember this.
- Call-Back:
- While Gooper and Mary-Lynn were arguing about their little "vendetta", Gooper tells Mary-Lynn point blank how he always has to convince a mean brute who deep down cares about his sister, a downright horrible person who has a "way" with children and a spineless sheep who is not well-respected by anyone around him to let her come over with them, like he did a week and a half ago. Liam, in particular, replies in a rather snideful way towards Gooper after he, Flaig and Bob get mentioned out by him.
Liam: Throw us under the bus, why don't ya?- Carrie mentions Mary-Lynn calling her a short-ass and threatening her at Talia's birthday party a month ago before she dismisses it by claiming she does not remember.
- Gooper throwing a vanilla milkshake into Logan’s face just for asking him if he could say bye to Mary-Lynn is an earlier reference to what he did to Logan's stepbrother, Carl, in the first episode of the remaster.
- Call-Forward: Linda mentions having had negative experiences with women from the Hatchins family in the past, referencing her being bullied by Mary-Lynn's aunt, Terri-Lynn, when she was a freshman in high school.
- Can't Live With Them, Can't Live Without Them: Carl sometimes wishes that Logan would move out of the house and yet when Logan is in a utter stump thanks to Mary-Lynn breaking up with him, he wastes no time in trying to help his step brother.
- Comfort Food: After storming off the dining hall for being mocked for his weight by Mary-Lynn, Calvin can be seen eating pizza in his bedroom..
- The Dog Bites Back: Logan and Talia both get their own backs at Mary-Lynn.
- Following Carl's advice, Logan refuses to give in to Mary-Lynn and sternly dismisses her when she attempt to lure him back to her.
- In case it was not an accident, Talia bumping into Mary-Lynn all while getting milkshakes dumped onto her serves as a reminder for all the trouble she caused that week.
- Don't Make Me Destroy You: Gooper makes a threat towards everyone at Goomburger to not laugh at him after Mary-Lynn spills a milkshake on his face.
- Everyone Has Standards: When Carl describes the utter disaster of the dinner with Mary-Lynn, Dry Bones is rather uncaring towards the situation. However, when Carl mentions that Mary-Lynn also insulted Linda, he seems genuinely concerned for her.
- Freudian Excuse: Implied on the "Excuse" part for Calvin when he mentions how him being fat and living an unhealthy lifestyle might have had something to do with raising Logan for most of his life.
- Straw Hypocrite: Mary-Lynn claims to love animals, but she is immediately repulsed upon seeing Cuddles and Kisses, and according to Carl, she threw her bag at a pigeon because it nearly pooped on her. Likewise, she claims to be a vegetarian but demands that Logan takes her to Goomburger after they leave the Mitchell residence.Carl: I thought you didn't eat meat.
Mary-Lynn: *** you!! - Jerkass Has a Point: Calvin is in complete agreement with Carl that Mary-Lynn is bad news due to the women of her family being notorious for being problematic. Unfortunately Logan doesn't listen until it's too late.
- Laser-Guided Karma: After everything she did to Logan and his family, Mary-Lynn gets a well-deserved punishment in the form of Logan firmly refusing to go back to her and getting laughed at and recorded by everyone in Goomburger after accidentally bumping into Talia and causing her to spill a tray of milkshakes all over her.
- OOC Is Serious Business: Not even the prospect of having meatballs for dinner manages to get Logan to come out of his bedroom.
- "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Logan tears Carl a new one when he accidentally lies about Mary-Lynn going back to Gooper.Logan: Y'know, Carl. I used to think you were a nice kid even if you were kind of a loser.Logan: But the fact that you would lie to me about my girlfriend like that?! You’re nothing but a spineless little rat!Logan: Guess you just can’t handle the fact that that Grace chick would never be into a loser like you!Carl: Fine, get your stupid heart broken, see if I care!
- Rule of Three: The Running Gag of people getting milkshakes thrown at them happens three times, first to Gooper, second to Logan, and third and last to Mary-Lynn.
- Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Subverted on the "I'm Outta Here!" part because although Logan had already packed his things to leave his family and Toad Town behind, Gooper and Mary-Lynn prevent him from doing so after the latter gets back together with the former.
- This Is Gonna Suck: Upon Logan hearing the entire family talk about how awful Mary-Lynn was to them, both Calvin and Carl have this reaction.
- Writers Cannot Do Math: Calvin says in the episode that he is 47 years old. However, Calvin's birth year has been given by
Word of God as 1973, meaning that he'd have to be 44 years old during this episode, which is set in the year 2017. Furthermore, the episode "Looking Back" depicts him in his senior year of high school in 1991; if he was 47 years old by the time this episode takes place, he'd have to have been 21 years old back then, which isn't too likely unless he got held back in school several times.
