Silicon Snarker

Go To

Basic Trope: A robot or intelligent machine has a sense of sarcasm.

  • Straight: AL1C3 occasionally gives her creator Bob lip despite working under him.
  • Exaggerated:
    • AL1C3 never talks without sarcasm. Her experiencing Sarcasm Failure or otherwise not acting snarky is even considered equivalent to her experiencing a computer glitch.
    • Armed Portes are each given their own personality and somehow all develop into snarky assholes.
    • The internet itself always gives sass in this universe.
  • Downplayed: AL1C3 isn't intelligent but was programmed to give snarky responses when she can't help with something as a joke.
  • Justified: Bob wanted to give AL1C3 a proper personality as a test in Robotic Intelligence. He succeeds, but continues with more tests, which starts to grind her gears (No Pun Intended), to the point that she starts sassing him in retribution.
  • Inverted: Bob has problems with his loyal but ditzy robot AL1C3 and occasionally gives her sass. Sometimes biting him in the ass when she misinterprets them as commands.
  • Subverted: AL1C3 seems like she's being sarcastic, but she's genuinely saying something and just coming across that way.
AL1C3: "Wow, Bob, I didn't think you had it in you to build a robot like me?"
Bob: "Do I detect a hint of sarcasm in your voice?''
AL1C3: "No I was just surprised."
  • Double Subverted: ...only to follow it up with snarking about why she's so genuine.
AL1C3: "After seeing some of your experiments, I'm surprised my head is screwed on straight."
  • Parodied:
    • Bob invents the sarcasmtron 3000 to specifically snark at people he doesn't like when his own words fail him.
    • AL1C3 is Bob's Artificial Family Member, and is currently in her "Teens Are Monsters" age.
    • The setting's Alternative Turing Test to gauge robot intelligence consists of gauging how snarky a robot can be. A robot with no sarcastic edge isn't considered intelligent.
  • Zig Zagged: Sometimes AL1C3 is snarky as hell, sometimes she's sweet as honey. This is due to going through constant reprogramming by Bob to make her loyal, but still her own person.
  • Averted:
    • AL1C3 never snarks Bob, either out of respect or not being programmed to.
    • AL1C3 isn't sentient and has no snark.
    • No robots exist in the work.
  • Lampshaded: Bob: "Why did I decide to give you a mouth?"
  • Invoked: Bob wants a robotic servant to help him with his crafts, but he feels that he would be making a slave if they worked unconditionally, so he programs a personality that's intelligent enough to have its own opinions, even if she's still his maid.
  • Exploited: AL1C3's snark makes her pass the Turing Test with flying numbers.
  • Defied: Bob doesn't program any ability for sarcasm in AL1C3 and if she develops it on her own, he resets her programming to forget it.
  • Discussed:
Bob: "AL1C3, my girl, my dear, precious, nub-nubs, why must you belittle me over every failure?"
AL1C3: "If my irritation annoys you, you could always not screw up so much!"
  • Conversed: "Why is AL1C3 so damn snarky? Why would anyone program a robot like that?" "I mean, she is more fun to talk to than a toaster."
  • Implied: AL1C3 is never built in the story, but her brain is put onto a computer terminal for testing purposes, and Bob gives annoyed looks as he reads what her program is saying about her circumstances.
  • Deconstructed: AL1C3's snark is too much for Bob to handle, and he has her demolished for it.
  • Reconstructed: Bob realizes he just murdered a sentient being for being intelligent enough to have opinions. He suffers a My God, What Have I Done? moment and begins mourning her seemingly destroyed corpse. She then lights up again with snark,
AL1C3: "If you intend to hold a funeral, you better make sure I'm dead first."
  • Played For Laughs: Bob gets annoyed with AL1C3's constant fussing and builds the equally snarky Ch-1-RL-13 to teach her a lesson. It doesn't work and now they both give him lip.
  • Played For Drama: Their lab is under attack by Emperor Evulz and AL1C3 is being snarky to mask her fear.
  • Played For Horror: Bob built AL1C3 to be a loyal servant who'd do as he says. When AL1C3 starts acting sarcastic, it's the first sign that somethings wrong.
