Scolded for Not Buying

Go To

Basic Trope: Shopkeepers get upset when the player doesn't buy from them.

  • Straight: In the video game Trope Quest, Sam is a shopkeeper. If you leave his store without buying anything, he'll scold you for it.
  • Exaggerated: If you leave Sam's store without buying anything, he kills you.
  • Downplayed: If you leave the store without buying anything, Sam says something like "Aw, man, I thought you'd buy something..."
  • Justified:
    • Sam really needs money.
    • The items that Sam sells are useful for your quest, so he's confused as to why you wouldn't want them.
    • The game is set before they invented "Customer Service."
  • Inverted:
    • For whatever reason, Sam reprimands you when you do buy from him.
    • If Sam has nothing in stock, you can scold him for not having anything that you can buy.
  • Subverted: ???
  • Double Subverted: ???
  • Parodied: Sam doesn't care what you do in his shop (not even shoplifting or Stealing from the Till right in his face)... but his Berserk Button is when customers leave without buying anything. If you do this, he gives you a 20 minute "The Reason You Suck" Speech.
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted:
    • Sam says nothing when you leave his shop without buying anything.
    • Sam keeps it positive even if you don't buy from him.
    • Trope Quest has no shopkeepers.
  • Lampshaded: "I know it's a little irrational for me to get mad over this, but I'd really like it if you bought something."
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: Sam is a little upset when you don't buy from him, but chooses not to say anything.
  • Discussed: "If you're going into Sam's shop, it's a good idea to buy something. He gets... upset if you don't."
  • Conversed: "Why do shopkeepers in video games usually scold you if you don't buy from them?"

You're gonna go back to the main page without buying anything?!
