Dating Service Disaster

Go To

Basic Trope: A character uses a dating service to meet up with someone, and the date is not who they expected at all.

  • Straight:
    • Alice's date Charlie, who claimed to be a fit, attractive woman around her age turns out to be a filthy, unattractive man who's 30 years older than her.
    • Bob's date turns out to be his platonic best friend Dave.
  • Exaggerated:
  • Downplayed:
    • Charlie is a woman who's the same age as Alice, but otherwise she doesn't match her profile description at all.
    • Bob's date turns out to be someone he knows from work, whom he prefers keeping a strictly professional relationship with.
    • It turns out that Fiona, George's supposed date,'s profile was supposed to have been deactivated, but hadn't staled enough yet for the system to notice.
  • Justified:
    • The dating service is poorly managed or moderated, so fake profiles are rampant and mismatches occur frequently.
    • Worse, the 'service' is nothing but a scam.
  • Inverted: The date goes really really well and the two are a perfect match for each other.
  • Subverted:
    • Charlie initially appears to be way off their profile, but that's because Alice met the wrong Charlie at the restaurant. When she actually finds the Charlie she matched up with online, the date goes well.
    • Bob and Dave are initially freaked out, but later realize they really do have romantic feelings for each other after all.
    • (From Parodied #2) After that initial mishap Bob and, the appraiser by profession, Edna find attraction in one another.
  • Double Subverted:
    • Until Charlie admits to being a Neo-Nazi.
    • Bob also realizes he is sexually attracted to Dave, at which point Dave can't handle it anymore and breaks off their relationship.
  • Parodied:
    • Charlie turns out to be an animal (especially a Funny Animal, something extinct or something else highly unlikely) or an inanimate object. Not that this stops Alice.
    • The service provides archeological dating.
  • Averted: The date is no disaster, even if it didn't end up working out in the end.
  • Defied: Alice takes special caution when using dating services, always keeping an eye out for red flags.
  • Implied: Alice considers looking for a partner on a dating site, but quickly reconsiders after remembering her last computer date.

Back to dating in person for me, this was my last Dating Service Disaster ever!
