Vintage PC gamers have noticed a disturbing trend of forgotten older games becoming inaccessible to modern audiences, especially when they're owned by now defunct companies and designed for obsolete operating systems and hardware. Another issue is consumer ownership in the face of digital distribution overtaking physical media as the dominant format for games. Digital Rights Management became a sore point for archivists and enthusiasts who want to own their media, and gamers especially began to see the need for alternatives to Internet-dependent platforms like Steam. In 2008, one company answered the call.

GOG.com (formerly known as Good Old Games) is a digital distributor of PC video games. Beginning as a subsidiary of Polish company CD Projekt, GOG.com today is best known for ports of abandonware titles from The '80s and The '90s to modern operating systems, though there's also a decent catalog of current releases, ranging from indie games to even AAA titles. CD Projekt's own productions like The Witcher series and Cyberpunk 2077 are on sale as well.

As stated, their main selling point is games without DRM, in contrast to services such as Steam and Originnote. Additionally, as legacy compatibility is notoriously tricky with really old titles, the older games in their catalog are all modified to run properly on modern systems, sometimes even better than they did at the time. The feelies aren't left out either, with soundtracks, manuals, and scans of original included documents (maps, comics, and the like) thrown in with most purchases. It's not uncommon for these extras to take up more drive space than the game itself.

You can check out the catalog and download the Galaxy client at the GOG website. You can also vote on which games you want to see modernized next with the GOG Dreamlist.
