The Kooks (Music)

So at my show on Monday
I was hoping someday
You'd be on your way to better things
It's not about your make-up
Or how you try to shape up
To these tiresome paper dreams
Paper dreams honey
So now you pour your heart out
You're tellin' me you're far out
Not about to lie down for your cause
But you don't pull my strings
'Cause I'm a better man
Movin' on to better things
"She Moves In Her Own Way"

Well, uh-oh, oh, I love her because she tropes in her own way:

  • Alliterative Title: "Sofa Song".
  • Beauty Is Bad: In "Naive", the girl has cheated on the protagonist and left him in denial that such a pretty girl would do this.
How could this be done by such a smiling sweetheart?
  • Break-Up Song: "Naive" is about a girl cheating on the protagonist and the protagonist assuming she's taking advantage of his trust issues for her own gain.
I know she knows that I'm not fond of asking
And true or false, it may be, well, she's still out to get me
And I know she knows that I'm not fond of asking
True or false, it may be, she's still out to get me
  • Broken Record: The outro of "Naive" is mainly the narrator saying "Just don't let me down".
  • Deliberately Monochrome: The cover of Inside In / Inside Out, with the album title in red.
  • Face on the Cover: Inside In / Inside Out shows the band members in the recording studio.
  • One-Woman Song: "Jeanie", their collaboration with lovelytheband, is named for the woman the song is written about.
  • One-Word Title: "Seaside", which is the place the narrator finds love on and is based on the seasides in Brighton, where The Kooks come from.
  • Promotion to Parent: The subject of the song "Jeanie" was the main caretaker for her younger sister due to her parents being largely absent.
Her parents weren't really 'round at all
She looked after her sister like a mother
And she never said a bad word about it
Knew that there was no way around it
  • Retraux: Their songs are mainly based on 1960s songs, with a strong influence from the likes of The Beatles and Bob Dylan.
  • Silly Love Songs: "Seaside" is about someone finding love on the titular seaside.
Do you want to go to the seaside?
I'm not trying to say that everybody wants to go
But I found love on the seaside
  • The Something Song: "Sofa Song".
  • Titled After the Song: They were named after "Kooks" by David Bowie.

I know she knows that I'm not fond of asking
True or false, it may be
Well, she's still out to get me
And I know she knows that I'm not fond of asking
True or false, it may be
She's still out to get me
