He's made the songs for every single YouTube video you've watched.
Kevin MacLeodnote  (born September 28, 1972) is a royalty-free musician from Green Bay, Wisconsin. He spends most of his days writing and composing music for anyone to use as long as something original is built upon it. His use of the "Creative Commons" license means that people may feel free to tweak, remix, and do pretty much whatever they want with his music, as long as he gets credit.

He covers a drastically wide range of styles, from chiptune and dramatic music to... whatever this is, and for good reason: so many people have used his music that you've heard it at one point. No joke, the number of credits he has for the use of his music is over 5,000 and counting. If you watch TV, YouTube videos, or even movies, you have heard his music at one point in time.

His site also includes graph paper templates, printable calendars, and other stuff.

In November 2022, MacLeod released all his songs to be used for A.I. training data sets. Starting in 2023, some of his songs are composed with the help of various music-generating A.I. programs. However, at the end of 2025, he posted two songs he made in the 90s that seems to have been manually modernized without such programs.

Not to be confused with Ken MacLeod.

Kevin exhibits examples of:

  • Dark Reprise: "Waltz of Treachery" is almost an exact minor key cover of "Circus Waltz." Both are piano waltz tunes intended as silent film scores, but the former sounds much more sinister than the latter. Both were also released on the same day: January 1, 2006.
  • Electronic Music: His music is usually made through electronic means.
  • Genre Roulette: He's known for being able to take on pretty much any genre/feeling of music. Upbeat, happy, weird, erratic, fearful, or whatever.
  • Happy Circus Music:
    • "Circus Tent" is an energetic, bouncy circus theme on brass.
    • "Super Circus" is a lighthearted circus march.
    • Downplayed with "Circus Waltz". While the tune is quite circus-like, it's simply played on piano, and MacLeod describes it as a "general-purpose upbeat piece."
  • Public Domain Soundtrack: He's known for releasing his music with a Creative Commons license.
