Discovered by BMG in 2000, Ai moved to Japan and released her first album, My Name is Ai, in 2001, which did not achieve commercial success. In 2002, she became the first female artist to sign with Def Jam Japan, releasing two albums, Original Ai (2003) and 2004 Ai. Her third album, along with her single "Story," which peaked at 8 on the Japanese Oricon singles chart, propelled her to fame. The single earned triple million digital certifications in Japan.
Ai continued to produce successful albums, including What's Goin' On Ai (2006), which featured hit singles that achieved gold status, and Don't Stop Ai (2007). In 2009, she released Viva Ai, reaching the top ten in the Oricon albums chart, and her compilation album, Best Ai, topped the Oricon chart and was certified platinum.
In 2011, Ai shifted from Universal Music Group to EMI, releasing her international debut album, Independent, in 2012, which included promotional tours in Japan and Los Angeles. Following this, she released Moriagaro (2013), marking her first album under EMI Records Japan. Subsequent projects included various compilations and the album Wa to Yo (2017), showcasing her blend of traditional Japanese and electronic music. Her sixth compilation, celebrating her 20th career anniversary, was released in 2019.

Ai Carina Uemura was born in Los Angeles, California. Her father, Hisashi Uemura, was a construction businessman, and her mother, Barbara, was a real estate agent. The family moved to Japan when Ai was four after her father found employment in Kagoshima. Initially planning to return to Los Angeles, they settled in Kagoshima while he took over the family business.
